If you are painting sub assemblies, just take small bits of tac and put it on the contact points before you prime. If it's a slotted connection (like the Lion's shield into his wrist, or the same deal with Wraithlord/Wraithknight) just fill the hole with tac. Then once you're ready to glue, you just pull out or peel the tac off and you have unpainted contact/connection points.

I've been going back and catching some of these podcasts that I missed... and wow this episode is a hidden gem.... also magnifiers are a godsend... along with a really good work light/desk lamp... it doesn't matter how good of a painter you are if you cannot see what you are painting the results will not be as good as they could be...

Desk magnifiers are perfection. Just on a little arm, you can look down your nose etc. They're perfect.

Magnify gang in the house! I'm the same way, I use them for extreme details. I get headaches if I try to squint too hard. So things like eyes, lenses, spirit gems, trinkets, and embellishments, are when I bust out the magnifiers. But I do try to keep them off as much as possible, because they do "untrain" your ability to paint without them if you get too used to them.

I much prefer the desktop magnifiers on the arms, especially when they have built in lights. They are absolutely amazing.

@@ErgonomicChair I tried that and I had an issue where holding the model close enough for it to come into focus, caused me to constantly hit the butt end of my brush against the magnifier. How do you handle that?

A great show and reinforces the point that a lot of the hobby is personal preference (brushes/paints/tools). The vortex mixer and wowstick have been a huge help for me. Also if a tool makes something easier for you (magnifiers/airbrushes/fineliner pens) then go for it. Easy choice.

So true! Can’t say I’m familiar with the wowstick, otherwise it might have come up in this conversation! I’ll have to check it out.

im all about the magnifiers. i did start using them and then find i couldnt live without them, but its not because i was now seeing worse without them because my eyes adjusted. i can see just as well without them as i could before, its just now i realise i couldnt see jack sht before and all those tiny details you see in photos that you cant see in the hand, you now see in the hand. theyre up there with the wet palette where i feel like it was an instant upgrade on my ability and the thought of going back just seems absurd. i am also short sighted and i wear them over the top of my glasses, the ones with the headband where the little rest comes down to your nose bridge and then the actual glass is out a bit from ur face are the go to ones i think when u got glasses. a big thing for me is not just that they magnify, but they change my focal length. when i hold a model withput them, with my glasses on, i cant focus on the model if its closer than about 35cm from my eyes. with the mags on i can focus at about 15cm, so even if they didnt magnify just being able to halve the distance i can focus on the model is such a game changer in terms of level of detail and actually it means i strain my eyes way less, cause seeing everything is just effortless.

Just discovered your show, really enjoying it. Just a little hidden gem I have recently discovered, the magnetic sheets people use for transporting mini, I cut them into strips and glue them to some wood for a magnetic priming stick. I also put some on the lid of my wet pallette so that I can put my WIPs away nicely in between painting sessions

Honestly, dremmel drills for £40 and a diamond cut bit for £6 is the best. I'd never go to a pin again.

That’s what my optometrist says as well. I’ve only started to need reading glasses at 42 but I can read fine without wearing them. Seeing a model without any magnification? Impossible. Dunno why. Maybe it’s because I don’t read a book as close to my face I comfortably paint. But I wear a cheap magnifying head set because otherwise I wouldn’t be able to do the hobby. I am going to try a stronger magnification set of glasses though soon so I don’t have to wear the headset if that works good enough.

Demijohn rubber bungs with a penny washer glued to the big end is the perfect "painting handle". You pin the foot of the mini, cut the end of the pin at an angle and you can push it in and the rubber grips the pin and stops it moving. Each project has an MDF tray with magnetic sheet stuck to it the Penny Washers stick to the magnetic sheet preventing accidental falls. I use plastic shot glasses for mixing paints, a box of 1000 from Party Plastics is the cheapest

I have reading glasses, I got the optician to do me a "modelling" prescription that adds X4 magnification to my reading glasses. I occasionally use the magnifier, mine has a band that goes over the head which takes the weight so the headband doesn't need to be too tight, which causes headaches

I'd argue that moldline removers are a bit underrated. I don't use them myself as I can buy knives, but for painters under 18, who can't buy knives, they can be vital.

I agree that pin vice is overrated. You cant step up bit sizes when you are doing like 3mm or larger magnets. So you end up getting that small electric drill to do that job anyways. It's not like it can't drill barrel holes when you put the small bit back in.

If it weren't for magnifiers, I would have had to quit playing a very long time ago. At 65 they are absolutely required.

If you live in the UK use the bottle caps from Colgate Plax Mouthwash bottles as miniature painting handles. Even better than the shot glasses.

I don't have a "hidden gem" but I do still use a piece of card wrapped in brown parcel tape for my palette, which I've done since my 'eavy Metal days. And I use a magnifier headset...
