HM the late Queen Elizabeth's engagement ring was "Just Perfect" a good sized stone...yet easy to wear under gloves. It had a personal History as the stones came from the broken up Tiara of the Mother of Prince Phillip. Classy in every respect.

I've been told it is the ring now worn by Queen Camilla as her engagement ring ? Do you know if this is true? Yes, you are partially correct. To be more precise, when George VI proposed to Elizabeth, he gave her a ring with a Kashmir sapphire. Later, the sapphire ring was replaced with pearls. The engagement ring that Queen Camilla wears is indeed from the Queen Mother’s collection, but it is not her engagement ring. The origin of this ring is unknown; however, it is said to have been given to the Queen Mother after the birth of Queen Elizabeth II in 1926.

The gold ring that was given to a member of the household in 1885 may have been given by Queen Mary's mother (Mary Adelaide). Queen Mary was only a Serene Highness and not Royal Highness in 1885. She only became a Royal Highness after her 1893 marriage to Prince George (later George V).

I am not rich, so I’m just repeating what I’ve heard. Apparently, inheritance taxes are so ridiculously exhorbitante that the heirs of the wealthy often can’t afford to pay them. Therefore, they auction off big ticket items like jewelry to be able to afford their taxes.

Not everyone with titles are rich unfortunately. And inheritance taxes can be very pricey, so descendants sell their inherited items to pay it.

HRH Princess Margaret... was able to have sorted her affairs so as not to pay tax... BUT chose not too ! There was a house in the Caribbean gifted to her son...Lord Lindley which he sold... the bulk of the Princess's estate was from her Jewels and Nice pieces these were taxed on her death...as Death Duties. The two children ,,,decided to sell off some of her pieces to pay the tax... However... Interest was great and the Items sold fetched way over the expected fig and yes that meant some items need not have been sold... I've wondered why HM The Queen allowed such items as a Fabergé Carriage clock and Jewels that were gifts from Her Parents to Margaret to go under the hammer? at the very least Bid for them?...BUT that's not how the Royal Family...Under The Queen...worked!

Being aware of the two engagements, I have often wondered about the question of rings. I especially appreciate your research because, lacking documentation, I had made the unfortunate assumption that the two engagements and only one bride translated to only one ring! Something I felt was not only cheap but extremely insensitive.

About 30 yrs ago the now defunct "Royalty" magazine (British) clearly stated it was a "half circlet of rubies and diamonds, set in yellow gold.; and that she used it as the engagement ring to George V as well." Queen Mary "was engaged before to King George V" ?? NO, she was first engaged to Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence, King George V's elder brother. The Duke suddenly died a mere six weeks later, and Queen Victoria was so impressed with and fond of May she "persuaded" George to marry her.

Thank you. Nicely done. However, a few comments. The marriage between the King and Queen was certainly NOT happy. King George V was a tyrant who terrorized his family and may have been bi-polar. Their youngest child, Prince John had epilepsy and was mentally challenged and was shut away at Sandringham with his own staff. The couple were certainly NOT demonstrative in public or private and Queen Mary hated having children and hated the physical act of sex as she had never been instructed by any female relative as to what to expect. Her Late Majesty was "chosen" to marry Prince Eddy as a way to get him to straighten up. This was especially true after the Clevland Street scandal in which it was implied that His Royal Highness participated in activities in a male brothel and that he might have been gay. Prince Eddy's first choice of a marriage partner was Princess Helene' of Orleans and when he died he screamed out HER name and not Her Late Majesty's. I believe that Her Late Majest wore both engagement rings as she actually did fall in love with Prince Eddy and did learn to love King George V.
