Sir, I remember as a Bengali Hindu all our beddings are still made with Shimul Tulo or the silk cotton that you were speaking, Even far in Northern India, Muslims weavers and bedding makers ascertain that only bengalis demand Shimul cotton from them, which they have to bring upon order basis! It helps in keeping pillows and Kantha in a good condition and is different from ordinary cotton!

True Piyush! The mulmul was called as kalinga cotton around 500-300bc as per records, as Gangetic Muslin when romans picked it up during 26bc-100ad as per Roman records and more recently as dhakha mulmul. My sense is it was probably the odissa-Bengal region (lower range of Ganges and thereabouts) where it originated. Bengal muslin too was famous over the last 2000 years. Maybe it was a slightly lower grade of the same cloth since Dhaka muslin had many grades. There are Tamil sangam poets who have written poetry about how Tamil ports used to wait anxiously for ships coming from Bengal/kalinga carrying India’s finest cotton from these two regions.so why would modern day Bengalis not ask for it with 2500 years of use!!😀
