My great grandfather and his brothers were involved with the local Communist party and this protest. One of the things I remember being a point was many of the working class men in these areas were also veterans of WWI. They had seen first hand what the fascist movements were doing throughout Europe and they were determined to make sure it didn't arrive on their shores

My grandmother arrived in the East End from German after the Nazis had shown their hatred of various people and she was part of the Cable Street protests. She said in her opinion many British people adopted Fascism with more enthusiasm than most Germans and it shocked her. The difference in her opinion was that there were more people in Britain who were willing to stick two fingers up to the establishment who advised they just put up with shit. I get the impression that modern day people are more complacent about challenging Fascism.

This is actually not accurate. The 'fascist' side was mostly teenagers, indigenous English from the working class east end they numbered around 3,000 and around a quarter of them were teenage girls; The anti fascist side numbered around 200,000 and we're a mixture of communists, Jewish Zionists and academics, mostly middle class or wealthy people The two groups never met as the police couldn't control the violent communists and the march was called off The only incident was a small group of Blackshirts (who were going early to set up podium of sorts I believe) were attacked, famously Tommy Moran boxed about a dozen communists single handedly before being hit with a wooden bat wrapped with barbed wire

Interesting appraisal by Alan Hudson but I don‘t think he‘s entirely honest: for starters he confuses his premisses somewhat by talking of a fascist sympathiser facing some kind of home eviction which issue if at all really relevant is then quickly left entirely! Then he brings the abandoned tram by its communist party motorman and then the confusing matters of whether or not labour and/or communist party leaders wanted to take official action or not, and I understand probably not. He cites the communist party and of its home base of Russia as though it was a paragon of virtue - which many did think - but that was before George Orwell‘s observations were made known. Popular opinion did side with the Republican Government of Spain against Franco‘s military insurrection but little did it know of internal politics of that country eg the murder of a highly respectedright wing member of Spanish parliament Calvo Sotello answering the door at his home by government agents, an assassination taken as the last straw by Spanish army circles and an excuse to rise up against the ruling left wing government there. He talks disparagingly of fascist attitudes in Mosley‘s party where probably many thought other parties weren‘t doing enough for the country and who just loved their country…certainly many were unwittingly naive and wanted more done to bring an end to unemployment…and even the Independent Labour Party and eG Fenner Brockway had spoken well of Mosley and his recommendations dismissed by his ministerial superiors causing him to resign to form his New Party (which wasn‘t ever called the New Fascist Party of GB btw). Mosley certainly had his faults and was both ambitious and impatient and no doubt at all that he would be dictatorial! Hudson also talks of the Jewish population as though they were hard done by…and not unlike the Bangladeshis…Many Jewish people would be thankful for their asylum in Britain and if they were communistic in belief why were they in Britain? As for the Irish both speakers talk of the “sweated labour of the Irish” as though Britain was guilty of committing some injustice…The Irish Free State existed why should they be in England and not in their own country? They were active in their IRA activities - not the Irish government of course - but why criticise a country that gives work and exile? And in the coming war against fascism the Irish would remain neutral, and none of the bs about Irish volunteers in the British Army… And in Britain there was a market for Irish exports… Has Alan Hudson read Frederick Mulally’s little book on Fascism in Britain written in the 1930s? When a very young teenager I came across a copy which I bought at a second-hand bookshop in South London and it made a life-long impression upon me. Mosley was a strange figure, and lost his aim. I saw his Trafalgar Square rally of Europe a Nation, heard his speech, noted his personal pronunciation of the word “capitalistic” accentuating the second vowel rather than the fourth, and even felt a little sorry for him warding off the arms of many who followed him at very close quarters all the way to Charing Cross Station court precincts and especially noting his limp - the origins of which at the time I was ignorant - and thinking he had been aggressed. The original left-wing expression in Spanish ¡ No pasarán ! is better translated as “They shall not pass!” which to right-wing anti Republican Spaniards became a joke, they saying ‘but they did pass!’ Also strange the absence of any mention that of the Jewish exiles in the East End none came from fascist Spain, mostly from Eastern Europe. A little reading of the history of that country might find something in common of most countries including Britain’s. He could have mentioned the case of Austria that although Austro-fascist the mass exodus of Austrian Jews including that of Freud himself RIP came only after the Anschluss take-over by Austrian Nazis and that even a renowned Austrian Socialist Karl Renner voted in favour of Hitler’s take-over rather than assassinated Dollfuss’s successor Schussnig. Lastly two points on the Cable Street affair: ( i) the reported version I have read gave credit to the police chief I/c of the failure of its effort to ensure the safe passage of Mosley’s fascists and his reporting this to Mosley and recommending Mosley to give way and abandon his wish to pursue with his March…with the result that Mosley agreed and gave instruction to his people to march away elsewhere (ii) that a result of the Cable Street fiasco was the Home Office ruling against the public adornment of political uniforms ie black shirts etc - which I think was a stroke of enlightenment on the part of the government of the day and credit ought to be made of it! As for immigration just take a good look at the state of London today! Post scrtum addenda: In point of fact as regards Ireland and the Irish, Mosley got on very well them, lived there when out of favour in England, took the Irish side over the Black and Tans, might even have met Skorzeny on his farm or down at a local pub in Ireland…to talk of the IRA Sabotage in England in 1939 campaign in league with the Gestapo especially in Coventry on 25th August 1939….When did Neville declare war on the Nazis?

Mosley and his black shirts were never involved in this and the 'Battle of Cable Street' never happened. You were shown images of barricades and film of Jews/Communists fighting with the police but where were the blackshirts in this footage? The reality is that Mosley agreed not to march through the East End that day and went to Parliament Square instead. Also, the conflicts were not in Cable Street but on Whitechapel High Street. The video shows organised blackshirt marches interweaved with communists fighting with the police. Our government were building an anti-fascist narrative at that time for obvious reasons and so created this myth. In the decades since, it is often used by left leaning groups as an example but it never happened. Stories evolve over the years and people idealise and elevate their part in past events. It is a historical fact that the blackshirts were not involved. It is worth noting that the people of the East End gave Mosley huge support. This film tries to suggest anti-fascism unified the people and that is a lie. The poor of East London were devastatingly effected by immigration because of the crime wave it brought and the rise in rental costs. This is a one-sided story and misleading to the extreme.

That's a great point Joe, it's the only accurate comment I've read. The 'blackshirts' that day were around 3,000, mostly working class teenagers from the east end I believe, around 25% of them were women. The only fighting on cable street was Communists and Zionists attacking the police And also for the sake of accuracy a small group of Blackshirts (who were going early to set up podium of sorts I believe) were attacked, famously Tommy Moran, a working class Geordie from the north of England boxed about a dozen communists single handedly before being hit with a wooden bat wrapped with barbed wire, which you can clearly see in the footage, I believe that's the only fighting between the two groups all day

The real argument on immigration is one of allowing CEOs to exploit currency differentials to mass import and exploit (on minimum wage/zero hour contracts usually) foreign labourers and drive down wages and conditions for everybody (which was a complaint that Henry Mayhew often met with in Victorian times) not consigned to foodbanks and redundancy by it vs. local investment and higher pay acquired by limiting the pool of potential work units opened up to corporations by creating border controls. As long as you have a situation where people can be shipped in because a minimum wage/zero hour job can make them wealthy back home this condition is going to exist. It is not their fault for wanting to better themselves. It is people wanting to exploit that to make money off their backs. I think until we have a global minimum wage to iron out these currency differentials and make migration needless there is little hope of this situation improving. It should also be borne in mind that it isn't just foreign PEOPLE that "undermine" domestic pay and conditions, companies from countries with stronger economic power also do so by being able to mass produce and market more cheaply than our natives. Again this is something Mayhew noted, the abolition of tariffs on corn led to our domestic agricultural set up being reduced to bugger by the importing of cheap German corn and the removal of tariffs on cotton did the same for the weaving industry through cheap French silk being imported. Nowadays we can see German supermarkets like Aldi doing the same for our retail sector. Domestic firms are being put in the classic social darwinian position of either cutting back on things like worker's benefits, pay etc or going to the wall. It is this that I can see both left and right (in their different ways) seeking to oppose. Bannon and Sanders both agree that open borders is a right wing policy to guarentee cheap labour for multinationals at the expense of domestic workers. "Fascism vs Anti-fascism" is a side show to divert and divide the working classes against their common enemy.

Saxon Wyvern the left is the establishment? Let’s review that claim shall we? You’re a clever fellow always up for examining his views in the light of factual evidence aren’t you? Economic leftism, as proscribed by Marx, advocated the collective ownership and distribution of means of production and wealth. Marx and others who followed his teachings wanted a classes moneyless society in which workers had complete control over their produce right? I wonder if you could be so kind as to tell me what percentage of British businesses are collectively owned and operated by workers collectives? Or who in parliament is advocating for the forceful seizure of the means of production and the violent removal of the capitalist class? No? Oh you didn’t mean economic leftism you mean social leftism don’t you? what you mean is that you can’t call gay people and black folks names anymore without losing your job? I wonder why? The fault of evil Marxist who control everything no doubt? Or perhaps . . . Companies don’t want to employ people who represent such repugnant views because if they do people will no longer use their services and buy their goods . . . Which would mean . . . The demands of capital are the reason you can’t say those things. Now what about those elites? Definitely all Marxist right? The same elites who funnel masses of their wealth through offshore accounts to avoid paying taxes and so they can horde resources? The same elites that sow division and discord between working class people in the media they own, so you think the benefit cheats and immigrants are your enemy? Ever looked in to the amount of tax revenue lost to benefit cheats versus the amount lost to corporate fraud? I wonder why those Marxist newspapers are always berating the working class and under classes and not going after tax dodging billionaires? Doesn’t sound like a great way to build class consciousness to me? The EU, surely a radical leftist organisation though right?! The EU that exist to facilitate the easier transfers of goods and wealth between the hands of a small group of super wealthy individuals? Hmmmm strange, doesn’t sound very Marxist to me? It’s almost like all those things you people claim to hate are . . . neoliberalism. . . But someone sold you a big old lie that it’s all the fault of the scary Marxist lurking in the universities and hiding in the bushes. And now you’ve swallowed that shit sandwich it seems to late to turn back and start thinking for yourself again. You’re a pawn. Nothing more.

@@NotAyFox again, you can deconstruct anything in this way. And doing so is the bane of western civilization. Its a relatively new idea to not beat my wife with a broom handle. Wearing clothes is a social construct. And again, I never hear anyone deconstructing an African American's racial identity or an Asian's racial identity with the zeal in which I hear people talk about how countries of traditionally european stock are invalid or not real, just an idea that can change or be molded to some new, better, mocha colored future.
