I had an old specs case which would closed with magnets so I cut the magnets out and made a leather case for my wife's hard drive with the magnets to close it. The way I did it was to thin down the leather where the magnet would go and just placed it in so I only had to cover it at the back with another piece of leather but from the outside it didn't need covering.

I really have enjoyed your latest videos. New techniques, new tools, and laughs too.

I thought that even circular magnets had poles that have align. I know I've done this once where the magnets were so off kilter, the closure would not hold. So, when i do this, I check the orientation of the magnet and mark it with a Sharpie. So, when assembling, the will lay flush and not repel each other. I wonder if all magnets are the same?

I do a similar thing but I use rectangular thin cabinet closure magnets. They have a bit more bite and I can get my long logo on them. You can get them from Amazon (and lots of places). They are very roughly 1-25 inches by 5/8ths inch and I/8 thick. I often use 2, one each side of the flap but not on a small bag like this one.

Long time subscriber first time commenter. Your videos are really great and you really seem to be a natural with your presentation and explanation. I’m currently studying fashion design and your videos are a great source of inspiration to me!

I've seen that concept applied to lady shoes too, haven't tried it though. Very nice PoC!

I personally love magnetic closures, nice job! Btw, just to clarify, you used 4 oz veg tan for the cutout circles and 8 oz veg tan for the actual bag?

Hi! this is such a cool idea, but i have one question, does the magnets actually hold the bag closed? are they strong enough? thanks!

Do magnets still affect credit/debit/key cards? I love magnets, but fear of messing up a magnetic strip on a card is the only reason I haven't done this in a purse yet. I think the little button magnet clasps are too weak to worry about, but their weakness means they aren't as reliable as the magnets you're using. Those look much nicer.

They'll only affect using a swipe, and really only if the strip is right up against them and rubbed back and forth repeatedly. If you use a card with a chip, or that you can tap (RFID), it won't be affected by magnets.

I know this is a bit unrelated to this video but, I was wonder if there was still a way to find the free patterns cortex has offered in the past? Amazing videos by the way, I’ve been following along for quite some time now.

I did my first closure with magnets about a week ago and I did one side with a circular cover albeit different from this. For the other side I made a thicker edge all the way across the flap using three layers of leather with the hole cut in the center layer. This recesses the magnet completely invisibly inside the flap and it won’t move because it is in that round cavity on top of it on each side. No need to stitch around the magnets. Probably a useless explanation, haha.

Any updates on the stitching chisels?

Stitching chisels will be end of year more than likely. Eric is super meticulous with testing etc. We have the awl, brass knife handle and Corter pounder to look forward too first. 😁

those little circle dies are made from the exact same steel as all your other clicker dies. They will last just as long. not sure why you think they wont last very long...
