The steps next to the train bridge are typically called “wing walls” today. You put them in to backfill against, which forms the support for the bridge span. It’s neat that that one doubles as a set of stairs.

That’s cool Wing Walls! Thanks for the background . Coming down I realized they were really steep

As a kid I would spend all summer long at my friends house in Cranford. Her house was right on the river there. We knew that river inside and out. We were on it all day long every day.

Bloodgood connects to the Rahway River and takes you right to the falls. Back in the summer you had to kayak under some fallen trees. Just keep kayaking, under the overpass, and you reach the bottom of Mohawk falls. It’s interesting because the falls is listed as a historical landmark but not much information about them.
@OutDehFamily5 ай бұрын
Thank you for the info! Im thinking about kayaking the whole Rahway river from South mountatin reservation to the arthur Kill , minus the Dams!

8:00 That's a sewer pipe. Not storm water, actually sewage, from the new developments. The old bridge is from the 1880s ? Maybe earlier. It was one of the original ones. I think they redid some of the stone work, but those " steps " are the original ones that were on the foundation support. When you see bridges that were built in the 60s and are rusted away, and these are still in great shape. They built them to last. And the history of the period just before these were built, all the wood bridges that only exist in rare paintings because there were no cameras back then, but imagine all the roads and train tracks and they had wooden bridges The trains were heavy and they supported them. The wagons were as heavy as a car and they supported them. In area less traveled you saw a ferry, basically a little more than a raft made out of logs, that had planks and the wagons and horses and people would use the ferry to cross. The bridges and Ferry charged a fee It was not uncommon to see people swimming across a river like the Delaware

Hey there! We are from Jersey out in Hunterdon County. Thanks for showing us this cool area of Jersey we have not been to yet. That looked cool walking under the train bridge and what perfect timing too with the train passing by. We do a lot of hiking up in Passaic, Suffix and Warren counties. We're currently working on a series of videos showcasing Norvin Green State Forest in Passaic County where we go into an abandoned mine and search for a stone living room. We subscribed to you and look forward to checking out your NJ catalog. If you're interested, come check us out and maybe we can show you some cool Jersey sights as well.

@krohikinghappens500Ай бұрын
@@OutDehFamily Well the living room is not inside the mine (although how cool would that be?), they are both just in Norvin Green. The mine is the only one in NJ that you can actually stand up in and it goes about 60' into the hillside. The stone living room is on the top of Torne Mountain.

Thank you for the video. Once you go under the parkway you will be in a residential area. Look on one of the side roads you'll find commercial businesses. More or less factories that construct stuff north of roadway prison. You can put your kayak in roughly in that area. Be aware though there are no fishing in that area now and they don't want anybody canoeing supposedly there's toxins in the water apparently given to me by a very close friend whose brother like to fish that area. But I did canoe the area well over 10 years ago. South of railway prison you'll find over to your right if it's not too overgrown a sunken wooden boat of some sort for the down you'll have to houseboats and eventually it will enter into the Arthur kill. Good luck when you do it hopefully you enjoy. Hopefully you're able to do it. Be aware of signs saying you can't go into the river. Or fish in that area.
