I used to walk those tracks to get from the 8th ward, to the 4th ward, almost every day, in the '60's, early '70's, Walked across all of the spans. You had to watch your step, for sure! Sometimes, I would hope the train, if it was coming through at the time, it was usually rolling slowly.

I worked on rehabilitating SIRT and RVRR between 2003-2006. I practically worked on every inch of that line all the way till the first trail rode on it in 2006 and it was one of the smoothest freight lines i rode with new ties and ballast. Contract between M&E and Union County expired in 2012 and M&E didnt renew it and trains couldn't go past the bridge. Bridge was never fixed and from what i remember something was cracked on one side and traffic was limited only to empty hoppers for storage all the way to Cranford and there was no agreement between NJT to enter their tracks on Cranford side so the line was only used for storage.
@OutDehExplorer2 ай бұрын
oh wow, that is interesting, thats why we are only seeing those hoppers ? Thank you for the history, love this stuff
@norbkowa2 ай бұрын
@@OutDehExplorer right now they are only allowed to store them up to the bridge since 2012 when M&E didnt renew contract to use the line but i dont think they even operate in Bayway anymore since i saw different company trains there. I dont work for M&E since 2006 and all the people in charge i used to talk to all retired so i dont know anybody there anymore and am a stranger there now.

Cheeques! A right of passage for all young men growing up in central NJ. That small dam protected the railroad bridge piers from undermining during flooding. Those railcars are covered hoppers that carry plastic pellets. Refineries produce more plastic than gasoline anymore, its a plastic world. They are stored there until needed. The rail line you walked at the end would have connected to the one that crossed the bridge. It also serviced the previous industry that was there before new buildings went up. There's always talk of reactivating the SI line but its always just talk. Fun trip, thanks.

These are the tracks of the old Staten Island Railroad (when it was owned + operated by the Baltimore & Ohio), leading across Arthur Kill and connecting up to the CNJ Mainline just west of Aldene Junction near Cranford. They’re still used, actually - mostly for taking trash off Staten Island iirc

25:26 That's a " Bump " car If you hit it, you went too far We had a bunch of cars parked at the end of the line that they had cut the lower section off It was behind our business One day in the fall, after years of there being no trains, we heard this incredibly loud bang We went out the back door and saw that the train had been servicing the businesses on the line north of us that was still used and they must have miscalculated how long the train was and they backed up expecting their to be space and there wasn't space and they slammed into the bump cars that were four or five of them that had been sitting for years on the tracks with the sole purpose to prevent the train from going where there were no more tracks The train push the bump cars down the line to where the tracks actually still were but the land had been sold and the developer simply put dirt and covered the rails and built a house and the lawn was where the tracks once ran The wheels of the bump cars dug up the grass which was only a couple inches deep and the rails had run across the road and the town had just blacktopped over them and the wheels that were locked down with the brake wheel slides through the intersection ripping up the asphalt as it went and the train stopped After that happened they ripped out the tracks behind the business and removed those bump cars and removed the crossing on the Main Street that had the gates and they put a metal stop at the end of the track and parked to locomotives there They haven't had any incidents since then but that was a scary day
