It's great that this tramway has been owned by the same family for so long, continuity is a wonderful thing. The fact that it has been brought up to a more modern standard without spoiling it's appearance and you only have to see it for real and ride on it to appreciate how well kept and maintained it is.

I was fascinated as a kid by the wedge, which opens the car door along with the station one. The control box used to have a wonderful brass drum-type controller, with Up and Down notches each side of the central Stop position. I don't know why the 'modernisers' can't see that such things are worth preserving. To me, they are a fundamental part of the whole system.

Unsual configuration of the tracks though, bullhead (95R) S1 chairs, flatbottom rail (113LB), with bracing around what look like Scotches (Used to secure the points rails from moving in crossings) securing the rail in place. Talk about a mash up, but it does work well and has for 140 years. By the way I had a Ford Escort MKii RS Mexico lol

The motor and gearbox are exactly like a lif system (elevator) with a worm drive gearbox.(my last job involved lifts) Even dow to the 4 cables on the cars and the safety cable, if the safety cable stretches too much it drops some latchs to stop the cars going down at high speed, there's probably a speed detector on the safety cable as well that does the same, apart from the incline, the only difference is that one car would be a balance weight The squealing you hear is more likely to be the electronic control which turns the motor into a speaker which is why you hear it., the electronic control is called a 'variable frequency drive'

As a Child I holidayed in Scarborough and would have rode on all of the Tramways, I believe there were 3or4 at one time from the age of 3/4. Also the one at Saltburn by the Sea. As my Grandmother came from Saltburn. The Zealand Hotel in Saltburn was unique, as it had its own Railway Platform. As you can probably tell I am from a Railway Family. What you pointed at wasn't the motor! That would be the reduction gearbox - the motor was to the right and drives a worm gear in the gearbox. This then turns a worm wheel gear and the wheel off the shaft.
@AdventureMe3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Alexis
@cyberprog3 жыл бұрын
@@AdventureMe No worries - I saw you got it right later on in the video - but feel you may have missed an important bit of info in terms of the gearbox and how it effectively acts as a safety mechanism. The Worm Wheel cannot drive the Worm Gear (screw) - so when the motor brakes it effectively stops the main flywheel from turning. It means that when they stop the cars, there's no risk of the cars moving back down if one was higher, once the motor slows the flywheel down it would prevent any movement. Interestingly when the motor stops it can't fully stop, it actually has to keep turning as the flywheel brakes as if the motor stopped things within the gearbox would get very upset!
@tooleyheadbang42392 жыл бұрын
@@cyberprog That must be a triple-start worm drive, otherwise stopping the motor would smash the gearbox.
