Hidden teaching revealed: "I have not come to bring peace, but a sword" || Jesus’ esoteric teaching

Many people in the Western world look at virtually everything from an "exoteric" perspective, meaning from a broad, surface level understanding. Much of Jesus teaching calls followers to have "ears to hear" - implying an esoteric meaning to his teaching; esoteric being under the surface, hidden, or with special knowledge. The controversial teaching in Matthew 10 of Jesus telling his followers that he did not come to bring peace but a sword is one of these kinds of passages. Sadly, it's also the passage the esotericists use to justify violence and war. It's a verse I continue to see Evangelicals use too flippantly in regard to Israel and Palestine. My intention today is to see that Jesus is inviting devotees to learn that the spiritual path will require the inner sword of discernment: one that often cuts us off from our familial and religious traditions and identities.

Sure, but metaphorical swords nearly often lead to physical ones. if you are the one who understands the metaphysical teachings of Jesus then the ones who dont will hate you and the things you speak and will seek to be rid of you in whatever way they deem appropriate. to a person this may mean rejection from a social group or club such as a church body, to a people group this can mean eradication or ethnic cleansing. So yes, Jesus speaks in spiritual metaphors with hidden meanings, but the sword he speaks of still serves to divide people permanently and irrevocably, and yes sometimes unto physical death.

I think you missed his point. I could be wrong but I don't think he's trying to say to completely avoid violence and war. Both of those are INCREDIBLY important but ONLY when absolutely necessary. He's saying that people use this verse to enter unjustified wars or do evil things. There is a time for war and a time for peace but that is dictated by God not us.

read Hebrews 4:12 sword of truth Proved 5:4 12::18 25:18 sword words. Reevaluation 1:16 there are four hundred times the word sword was use the Bible tell us what it what to tell us, if you are willing to seek for the truth. this person did not tell you what Luke 12 49-53.did talk about what will divide the family. trying to talk in big words - that is a sign of a trouble maker sorry to say it is the word of The Holy God the will will the fight. not every one in one family is going to heaven, some will go to hell and that is there choice. those who love Jesus Christ son of God will have fight with those in the family who love Satan
