Looking at the bark, the tree you fell appears to be a variety of poplar or, possibly an aspen. Although classified as a hardwood, the wood from a poplar is as you described, rather soft. I don’t know of anyone producing lumber from the poplar. It’s greatest commercial use is by the paper industry.
@HiddenSpringFarm
@HiddenSpringFarm Жыл бұрын
You’re most likely right, someone else said that too. I’ve seen poplars used as lumber, although not common. It gets hard as it dries too. I’ve saved a few of the decent sized trees anyway just in case.

Olive looks like she has feathers instead of a true coat ha hahaha! What a little stinker😂. Can you attach any of their old hanging stuff for them like in the catio and a couple of tree limbs braced so they can climb up and meet you eye level to play with toys and place treats up there? My heart goes out to you❣️

yes someone else suggested that I give them some higher ground so I've installed a few little shelves for them to get up and away from me while they're still getting used to their new space.

We would love a story of how you met your wife please! The scarves on Molly and Olive are really cute, too bad they don't seem to like wearing them.
@HiddenSpringFarm
@HiddenSpringFarm Жыл бұрын
Yeah we like the scarves too but Olive just loves to playfully bite around Molly's neck and ears. They were just on with velcro though, if we tied them on they wouldn't come off so easily. So you want the love story eh, we'll see lol.

If you are serious about logging some of your trees I would suggest a grapple attachment for your tractor. Makes it easy to catchup all the limbs and move them in a few trips to either a burn pile or a to a firewood prep pile. Then you can use the same grapple to move the limbed logs over to your sawmill and have them positioned for easy access to load onto the sawmill.
@HiddenSpringFarm
@HiddenSpringFarm Жыл бұрын
yes that's a great suggestion although that will cost a bit too to fitup the tractor for a grapple. million dollar question...grapple first or sawmill first? at least with a mill I can get started right away, cause I have pallet forks, i guess that's my thinking. I think you're right on with the grapple...I got my wife's buy in for the sawmill for now don't wanna push my luck lol.

The problem is you need to do the opposite. Be with them as much as possible even if it's just sitting in there quietly talking to them. Big problem is you have plenty other stuff to do and not enough hours. Really hope you can solve this soon.

Toys? Better toys when you are in there? Some things from your cat house? Things that are familiar? You'll do well. It's just hard on you to know they are sad. How much sqare footage do you have for the bunnies? We are considering some rabbits this year. In Cape Breton there are only native hare, so we need to make sure they are super secure.
@HiddenSpringFarm
@HiddenSpringFarm Жыл бұрын
Yeah I’m sad but they’re are a tiny bit better from when this video was filmed. About the bunny barn…the barn itself is 154 sq’ and the rabbitat is 252 sq’. Both have a separated stall for the buck and are tall enough so I don’t bang my head. Important thing I think is to lay fencing on the ground and use metal roofing on the bottom 2’ of everywhere. They love to chew the wood and I have one side all wood, they’re already chewing some of it. I have a playlist on the whole build if u haven’t seen it. The other thing is the rabbitat is open air on 2 sides and it allows too much snow to blow in then when it melts their beautiful fur gets all dirty so I’ll try to fix this next year.

The cats will come around. Those tube treats are very popular if you have them. Hard to spend time in the cold barn but I have also had luck engaging cats in play with wand toys. I fostered teenage cats a few times and they often forget how scared they are when they are playing.

Cats: When you stop free feeding them next week, make a schedule where you go spend 15-20 minutes with them 2x a day is ideal at the same times each day. It won't be forever, just to establish a relationship with them. That time should be spent on play with a long toy and feed as a reward and to nurture their hunt-catch-kill nature. Cats have many more sensors in their skin, hair and whiskers than dogs. The hay could be acting to overstimulate and therefore feed that anxiety level. Horse blankets might best for warmth and reduce the amount of hay they have access to. I noticed you have pellet litter. Since cats' paws are sensitive, not all of them accept the texture of the pellets and they will avoid the litter box. 2 cats should have access to 3 litter boxes minimum to give them the opportunity to own/mark their areas. You should also use different types of litters to find out the texture that they prefer to walk on. Good luck.
@HiddenSpringFarm
@HiddenSpringFarm Жыл бұрын
This is all good info. I do think they're ok with the pellet litter cause they were using it fine when they were in the house. They're just so freaked out. I've given them some shelves now for height and they're using them right away to get away from me lol. I just need a lot of patience and follow the schedule as best as possible.

Haha my Darlin takes care of our house pretty well, but gets neglected a bit cause I’m always at the farm. Actually working on KZbin takes most of my time between scripting, filming and editing its 7-10 hours per video. I’m watching Leafs hockey right now while I’m answering comments too 😂 Late nights, early mornings and flexible schedules help make it work. As the business grows I’m hoping to have a staff or two to help. I’m committed so there’s no quitting now 😝

I've never seen cats that were exposed to human touching and interaction at such an early age, as well as all the other cats and littermates loving humans, and still be pretty much feral. Kinda sad to see. I hope they'll turn around.
@HiddenSpringFarm
@HiddenSpringFarm Жыл бұрын
it's very strange to me too, especially since I have a lot of experience with having 8 cats. The 4 were feral (Dexter, Maggie & Chunk (Lovely, RIP) when we got them and we sweetened them up over a 2 month period and now they are amazing with me, not amazing with anyone else, but amazing with me I can pick em up and cuddle, they follow me around etc. These two have developed a serious fear of me, probably my fault in using a net to get them to the vet. Their two siblings are fine and are normal. I don't give up easily though so I'll keep you guys updated on the progress.

Yes they somehow developed a fear of me. Their siblings Mango and Tango are not like that at all, they come up to me and I can pet them and pick them up...these two cats forget about it. I'm gonna kill them with kindness though and see where that gets me.

Poplar.... don't think it's good for lumber
@HiddenSpringFarm
@HiddenSpringFarm Жыл бұрын
I really don't think it's poplar, but I have heard of poplar dimensional lumber. I've never even heard of a parasol tree in my life that the app was identifying it as. App could be wrong too, if it was summer I could check the leaves, more difficult from the bark only.
