Sheera might be on to something. Without giving any spoilers for future episodes, my running theory is that what they are doing in MDR is all testing for some kind of brain-machine interface or control technology. The boxes are not an interface for something in real life, but merely a series of tests so they can study their ability to stimulate and monitor different parts of the brain, including triggering emotion.
