Not elves, or even the setting's "not-elves but totally are elves", but the Warhammer 40K book "The Infinite and The Divine" has several scenes that are great at showing just how fucked up Necron perception of Time is. But the one in particular relating to this topic is when Trazyn is approached by a human he had brain washed into being his servant(long story and context needed, I won't provide, just roll with it), who regretfully explains that tonight is his last night of service, because he's gotten old, can't climb the stairs anymore, and his continued occupation of his job is impending the careers of all thecmen younger than himself. And it takes Trazyn a couple seconds to realize 60 years had passed since he first brainwashed the guy, and that that was something like 15 years longer then he should have reasonably expected this guy to live for.

So, interesting tidbit to bring up regarding Mind Flayers: in 3e lore, they aren't just extraterrestrial, but also are from the end of time. After the Gith rise up and start bodying them, the Illithids come up with a plan to sacrifice most of their Elder Brains to generate a psychic rift that catapulted what was left of their empire back in time, along with the Gith. The Gith then split up into the Yanki and Zerai over idealogical differences and begin squabbling with each other, only working together if it means eradicating Flayers. This is all to get to my theory: the reason divinities say they don't have souls is because they just sort of "appeared" one day, with no god or godess involved in their creation. They exist as the polar opposite to the aboleths, who have existed since before divinity and have inherited memory, meaning even the youngest one knows the gods are "just" extremely powerful beings that aren't worth their time to worship, despite one elder being that claims to have been involved in their creation.

Another great immortality aspect from a character and their race is Omni-Man as a Viltrumite in Invincible Season 1, and him giving his son a "lesson" about this to his son in the most brutal way possible.

One I don't hear get brought up enough in terms of an immortal's perspective vs a mortal's is The Last Unicorn. The book talks a lot about how immortal beings are not only not like us, but don't really understand us. An immortal feels no regret, because regret is the emotion one has to express the feeling that one has misued their time on this earth in some way. But for a unicorn who will live until the stars themselves go out, there is no such thing as time being wasted. An immortal feels no love, because love is a fleeting, passionate emotion unsuited for eternity. It's not that they simply choose not to have these feelings, they straight up can't feel them because a mind that perceives things in the concept of eternity can't comprehend things that give a life meaning, because those are emotions for beings that have to leave a legacy when they inevitably die. The titular last Unicorn is turned into a human, learns both regret and love, and in the end she becomes a unicorn again and lost those emotions, she could no longer feel the love for Prince Lir that she once did. The old witch keeps the harpy (who is also an immortal being) captive, knowing that one day it will break free and kill her in anger. But that harpy, that immortal being, will never forget the hate and rage that it felt towards its captor for the rest of its eternal life, and the witch wants it that way, because to her immortality is when you're never forgotten. My favorite passage is from the skull and even though he's speaking in riddles to hide the truth from the heroes, he's also speaking about how much his perspective has changed in the transition from a temporary life to an eternal death. “When I was alive, I believed - as you do - that time was at least as real and solid as myself, and probably more so. I said 'one o'clock' as though I could see it, and 'Monday' as though I could find it on the map; and I let myself be hurried along from minute to minute, day to day, year to year, as though I were actually moving from one place to another. Like everyone else, I lived in a house bricked up with seconds and minutes, weekends and New Year's Days, and I never went outside until I died, because there was no other door. Now I know that I could have walked through the walls. (...) You can strike your own time, and start the count anywhere. When you understand that - then any time at all will be the right time for you.” The book talks a lot about the importance of impermenance, as Schmendrick the magician (who was cursed with immortality until he finishes mastering his magic) says, “I was born mortal, and I have been immortal for a long, foolish time, and one day I will be mortal again; so I know something that a unicorn cannot know. Whatever can die is beautiful - more beautiful than a unicorn, who lives forever, and who is the most beautiful creature in the world.”

@@Dan_the_Druid There was also an animated film adaptation of it in the 80s of which the screenplay was written by the book's author. The movie doesn't quite get down the poetic language of the book but it covers basically every point of the story and most of the important lines. Christopher Lee made sure of that, it's one of his favorite books and since he played King Haggard, he kept on set his copy of the book with notes of which sections absolutely had to be included.

My character is specifically a guy who grew up seeing the Rise of Tiamat, all the shit after that, and then doing Baldur's Gate: Descent into Averrnus. He's completely traumatized just from those few years where the Dragons wrecked shit, the Elementals too, and then the Giants having a war of succession or some shit. I get why High Elves don't try fixing more stuff with their mega-rituals now, they're probably still reeling from the whole Netherese debacle, or the fact that Drow are a thing that happened.

To be fair if a creature is defined by a thirst for death and destruction I feel pretty safe in saying they’re evil. Githyanki isn’t a race, it’s essentially a faction. Githzaryi are considered more on the good spectrum and theirs literally no difference between them other than allegiance. When Lae’Zel turns traitor she’s I longer a Yanki. Gnolls are creatures born from death and live with a ravenous hunger that prevents all complex thought other than killing and eating. I feel like it’s a safe bet to call them evil.

The weirdest thing is that vision of Gnolls is new to 5e. They were an "evil race" before sure, but not any more than your standard goblin or bugbear or orc. It's why they are just chill hyena-folk in Eberron. 5e just decided they were humanizing too many "evil races" and that they needed someone to take the fall and become the "common weak enemy you don't have to feel sorry for killing".

Nah, evil requires agency. If a creature is only motivated by death and destruction, and cannot change its behaviour in any way, that's not evil. That's just nature. There are wasps that lay eggs in the bodies of caterpillars, which then hatch and eat the caterpillar alive. Horrifying from a caterpillar's point of view, but the wasp isn't doing what it does out of any conscious agency. It's acting on evolved instinct. A volcano and a landslide and a hurricane will all kill you stone dead, but they're just natural phenomena. A landslide can't decide not to kill you. The landslide just *is.* And by extension, Gnolls aren't evil. Because they lack agency in their violence. They can't choose not to kill and eat.

I can give a good example in my favorite TTRPG. Warhammer 40k the Orks are unquestionably evil in that world. They’re dumb as a sack of rocks that can build guns, cars and spaceships simply because they have a power to make things they think are true actually true. Their entire life is dedicated to killing. They need violence like we need food and water, if an Ork is deprived of fighting for too long they die. Even their own clans revolve around different borderline religious beliefs on the best way to wage war. They don’t care if they die so long as they get to die fighting, they don’t care who they kill as long as they get to kill and they’re part fungus so when they die they release spores that will grow more Orks and they can do this all again with greater numbers. In spite of all of this sometimes Orks will help other races sometimes, not for any noble goals of course, they couldn’t care less. They just figure they can get a better fight out of it. They’re a Fodder enemy that you’ll never have to feel bad about killing because even the best Ork is still a bloodthirsty monster that couldn’t care less if an ally dies or who they fight for.

The way I see it, as someone who's a fan of the Buffy/Angel relationship from Buffy the Vampire Series and Stefan/Elena from The Vampire Diaries is that the appeal of a series where the protagonist dates a vampire is seeing them deal with the hurdles said vampirism brings to their lives. The age gap if mentioned is rarely as much as factor as their habit of drinking blood or dealing with any crimes they committed when they were evil. If it is mentioned, It's only there as a form of melodrama at best and isn't really relevant to the engagement of the relationship. Shows where people date other supernatural beings like angels or demons or witches all add baggage with their supernatural gimmick because it's an easy source of relationship drama to draw from. As a result, This isn't meant to excuse shit like baby imprinting, because THAT's a whole other kind of thing entirely unrelated to simple dating a hyperbolically older man than you are that you met on your own terms.

I have to think about this shit at work. I've now got a group of people who I know watch anime, at varying levels. Got a couple guys who're like, "yeah, I've watched a few," kinda like me. One who went, "oh yeah, I've watched TONS of anime, love that shit," so I talk to him about the weirder ones because he gets it. New addition is mister "I have a list of like 200 anime I've watched, fucking try me," so I threw him a couple curveballs to see what's up. I love it, it's trying to gauge the potential reaction and backlash for any given anime you've watched, but I'm lucky to have found a few guys who have no judgement and will talk about any of it. Most of my coworkers are like ten years younger than me, so it's nice to get along that way. It's funny how the whole thing evolved. We started getting into it, and I was like, cool, we all like stuff like Sword Art Online, Attack On Titan, all the basic ones. I start suggesting stuff, Black Lagoon, My Dress Up Darling, Spice and Wolf. They suggest stuff, Chainsaw Man, Fairy Tail, Jujutsu Kaisen. All kinds of good shit to talk about now. I have an odd relationship with Frieren despite never having seen it: In Norwegian, Fieren means "The Proposer", specifically "The Man Who Proposes Marriage". It's like getting slapped across the face with a fish every time I see the title. The female version would be Frierinnen(The Proposatrix/The Woman Who Proposes Marriage) Goblin Slayer is tripe, but it is weird in the kind of tripe it is: It is a bad AU fanfic despite being its own thing.

lol Very interesting. Frieren's an interesting title, has a bunch of different meanings with wordplay. Frieren in German means to freeze/become cold which when applied to Frieren herself can be used as a metaphor for various aspects about her. Beyond Journey's End in Japanese is At/Of the Funeral written with kanji which gives the phrase several meanings related to death, cemeteries, funeral rites, ect. such as final farewell or remnant.

@@krodmandoon3479 Assuming this is about Goblin Slayer: GS does a lot of things emblematic to bad fanfiction despite not being one, but let up focus on the goblins themselves. The Goblins alone are this at least twice over. For starters they behave like a self-serving AU/Elseworlds element, in that their inclusion as presented radically alters the setting in ways that should make everything about them known to everyone in the setting, but only the author's self-insert/edgy OC/faves act like it, with the rest of the cast remaining in complete ignorance. The second way is that the way that the goblins change the setting's rules whenever they appear. They feel like something sloppily glued onto an existing setting by someone who didn't think that the gobbos existing would mean. Why is armor only important when there are goblins around? Why do healing spells only work that way when there are goblins around? The list goes on. It is fascinating to see something that isn't fanfiction feel so much like it.
