As soon as he had those confessionals where he showed he was self aware of being hidden in plain sight, I knew he had a legit chance to win.

For me it was when they had him recognizing at the end of one episode, Jesse and Cody were running the show but next episode him not trying to get them out and failing. Why include him saying that if it's not going to be relevant to anything?

The easiest way to pick the winner of a modern day season (S28+) that doesn't have returning players is to see which players get called on by Jeff when they first arrive on their tribe mats. ie the marooning on episode one. Jeff asks every player what their name is and asks them a question but the editors cut the questions and answers down to around 3 to 5 people. The winner's question and answer is always shown (except once, S30). On seasons with returning players that time is taken by Jeff talking to returning players so its a little harder to figure out. 43 was Noelle, James, Jeanine & Gabler. 42 was Mary-anne, Mike & Zach 41 was Abraham, Erika, Naseer & Heather 40 had returning players 39 was a weird one. Players didn't meet Jeff until the first challenge on the 2nd day. So no marooning mats & questions. 38 had returning players 37 was Nick, Gaby, John, Alison & Pat 36 they didn't show the questions and answers, they went straight into a challenge. 35 was Ben, Cole, Dr Mike & Ali 34 had returning players 33 was Will, Paul, Cece & Adam 32 there wasn't any questions and answers, they went straight into a challenge. 31 had returning players 30 is the only time a winners question wasn't shown. Tyler, Dan, Linsey, Vince, Rodney, Carolyn & Joaquin had their questions shown. 29 was Reed, Josh, Wes, Keith, Natalie & Nadiya 28 was Morgan, Spencer & Tony When 44 drops I will be betting on the players who's questions get shown.

The biggest problem with this season is that the win really came down to Gabler’s ability to form relationships, but the primary flaw in the editing was a lack of focus on relationships. Gabler’s win was out of left field for viewers because the edit was so big-move-heavy, which sat us in the perspective of players like Jesse and Karla. If the editing had focused more heavily on camp life and interpersonal dynamics, we as an audience would have seen the intelligence of Gabler’s game in action. I had the same issue with Kaoh Rong-Aubry seemed like an obvious winner to audiences because her strategy was foregrounded in the edit, but the jurors were much more compelled by the social relationships Michele had built.

Plus his understanding of jury management was almost perfect. If you compare that to Cassidy, who sent two very influential players to the jury after being rude and snarky to them.
@JT-gi8rx
@JT-gi8rx Жыл бұрын
Yeah, looking back at his gameplay, I think where he was really one of the all time great winners was his jury management. He didn’t ruffle any feathers, at least not post jury member eliminations. I’m a bit surprised Jeanine ores for him as they were enemies, but I think it might have to do with his strong social game. I think his social game was likely far stronger than the edit could show. Because it was probably loads of small talk between Gabler and each individual Survivor player, not the type of stuff you can spend a lot of air time on. Based on the finale, he seemed very close to every person, and knew and remembered details about all of them, and genuinely cared about them all. Next level jury management. Whereas Cassidy figured if she had won more challenges and been in more controlling alliances, that the jury would have to vote for her purely on that. Because by the formula of the game, she probably should’ve won, if you weigh each category equally. However that doesn’t work every season, sometimes jury members vote purely on how much they like a person and throw everything else out the window.
@whywhowhatwhere
@whywhowhatwhere Жыл бұрын
I think it's a bit more nuanced than Cassidy sent them off rudely. Karla was targeting Cassidy and then got mad at Cass when she returned the favour and Jesse expected Cassidy to make a bad game move just to improve his own chances. No matter what she did in these situations other than folding and giving in to their wishes (Not voting Karla out, Going into fire with Jesse) they were going to be upset.
@Mariap76
@Mariap76 Жыл бұрын
@@whywhowhatwhere maybe, but all the other players knew to try to pretend they would try to work with them to get someone else out. She was stubborn and wanted them to see her great strategy, ego stroking works in this game, but she was more concerned with her own ego, which left a bad taste in everyone’s mouth. Just look at the votes.
@Framlii
@Framlii Жыл бұрын
@@JT-gi8rx the issue is, she hasn’t won more challenges. She has won 3 individual immunities just as Owen. They were both sitting at ftc. Gabler was in controlling alliance. There is nothing that different her from 2 people she sits next to.

I feel like this format of deep dive investigative video, if applied to a broader topic like “what really is the worst move in survivor history?”- and given the right thumbnail, could actually go Peridiam-level viral. I just love the scenes from the show cut into the conversation, I love the Jeff puppet, I love it all! So well done!

This re-exploration of the season by watching it solely for the perspective of the winner is super interesting, Rob! I think this only confirms to me that 43 - if watched in the real time - is an excruciating slow burn with the momentum just dying out right before the Final 3, BUT if watched on a binge? Yeah, 43 definitely makes much more sense as a season, and as little moments and pieces of Gabler's story.

I feel like it would have been dope if Survivor put a compilation of clips somewhere in the show that shows Gabler doing all his assassin stuff with a crazy Oceans Eleven type song - it would have dawned on people what happened and it would have blown peoples minds. The editing team had that masterpiece with Jesse and the clips of talking about his place in the game, I think they could have pulled it off.

Just because we thought that Gabbler was doing great and deserved the win, but we also thought that the edit wasn't doing him justice and we thought the players wasn't seeing his game properly. Well...he did it. They did it!!! And we felt that it was a great survivor season. (We love your channel 🇧🇷🫶)

Great job recapping what Gabler's game was Rob! It doesn't change how I feel overall, but this does show that for most of the game, Gabler wasn't a loose cannon and he was usually aware of what was going on around him. Not being in on the Dwight vote solidifies to me that Ride or Die wasn't a thing until the double eviction. That plus his 'multiple plans' to get by each vote is still a little hollow to me considering we only know who is 3 were and not how he intended to get there, and why his relationships and plans to get to 3 where better than Cassidy's. I still think the majority of the jury was looking for any excuse to not give Cassidy the win and the Alligabler was a shoe in unless he royally screwed up that final tribal. What's interesting to me tho, is that I think Gabler played a really good middle game when he was able, and leveraged his position vs others in the game well. In a way it's not hard to do when there are so many threats ahead of you, but we've seen before where someone should have been quiet and would have progressed a lot further but ended up making a move when they shouldn't and got everyone against them. When he was allowed to be an active participant, he was and made great points. I guess I don't see him as having so much better of a game (or Cassidy over him) that the vote makes sense at 7-1. I agree with you in that I think Owen stayed on the fence one episode too long. Owen and the girls on one side vs Sammi and Gabler at merge would have been real chaotic and fun to see. Looking forward to your extended interviews as well as more like this where you dissect what you see!

I am someone who saw Gabler having a real shot at winning this since the Ellie boot. The editing really went out of its way to show Gabler talking about how he would win, which is something they do when the winner is coming from the bottom. Like Rob points out in this amazing breakdown, Gabler never backed down when an alliance member was being voted out, he even put those thoughts out there. He knew the jury valued risks and big moves and saying you want to be in the fire is a big risky move. He held trust and the people he could beat never realized that he was playing this way with intent. In life and survivor perception is everything. Gabler knew how he was percieved and played that to his advantage where cassidy wanted people to percieve her in her way. In the end the jury matched their perceptions of Gabler well and Cassidy looked like someone who had little clue on what really had taken place on the island. Based on her exit press she still hasnt understood it and its only reinforcing to me why she was blown out.

Spor on. Agree 100%. Been saying this since Cody got eliminated that after Jesse, Gabler had the best chance of winning because he was executing his game. Like him or not, he executed his game and he nailed FTC. I believe the edit was there, people was just focused on Jesse, Karla, and Cody to recognize that Gabler could win the season.

To me is clear as water, Cassidy's right moves were someone elses moves. Owen's wrong moves were someone elses moves. Gabler's rights and wrongs were all his own councious doing. People just get suggested because he got some goofy moments, but that's emotional, and Survivor is more rational than anything. Because someone is dislikeable, quiet, loud, goofy, knowitall, etc, that shouldn't prevent fans from seeing the gameplay as it is.

I really appreciate you taking the time to reanalyze the season. I get why people wrote off Gabler before the finale. I had him pegged as a potential winner early on, but a lot of his actions made me question that assessment along the way. But personally, I couldn't understand the total shock people had about Gabler winning in a finale against Cassidy and Owen. I'm not sure why people thought that couldn't happen after the first and second line contenders like Jesse, Karla, Cody, Noelle, and Sami were taken out. What did Owen or Cassidy do in the game that made them deserve the win? If anything I thought that Gabler showed far more attention and awareness regarding the dynamics of the game and how to navigate them than either of the other two. He recognized the danger of the Cody Jesse alliance long before even Karla Noelle or Sami did and he took steps to drive a wedge in it. He recognized the importance of getting an untrustworthy ally out of the game early merge, and then going under water and acting like a team player until it was necessary to do otherwise. I was impressed by how often the edit showed him (and Jesse) doing a listening tour before making decisions about an action plan. He was not the winner I hoped for (that was Jesse) and i could have understood a Cassidy win (she was in the majority for most of the game and won key chsllenges) but I think he absolutely deserved the win.

I completely agree with this comment. His self-awareness was even more impressive in real-time. A lot of analysts, I believe, had written him off, and sadly, the community seemed to follow suit. The nuggets were all in there, and anytime Gabler spoke to other players (like Karla and Jesse), people assumed he was a pawn relaying info. That's why so many people are angry. Personally, I screamed of excitement when Gabler won. If he had won against Jesse, that might have been questionable. I'm so happy he won

Totally agree with the “delusional wacko” conclusion (thanks to editing leading us to that) but disagree that “… his win was out there for all of us to see …”. Nope, EDITING strongly manipulated us into rooting for Jesse and we were completely misled. We totally missed Gabler bc of the edit which I find tiring. I don’t get as invested in Survivor anymore knowing that editing of the show is aimed to mislead. Such a shame it is not more real. As an aside: I have gotten so cynical now with Survivor editing that the first time I heard Gabler say “Alli-Gabler” I laughed and said, “yeah, editing or production dreamed that one up and told Gabler to use it sometime for entertainment purposes”. I doubt it came from him sadly.

I’m happy that an older contestant won and in such impressive fashion. The AlliGabler easily could’ve been a premerge boot because of his age but gained the trust of his Baka tribe mates. If he could finesse every single alliance without blowing up his game and making the F3 without ever receiving an elimination vote, the man deserves the win.

They also both managed their threat levels so well no one was even looking to take them out at any point in the endgame. They took out the people they needed to at the end in Brett and Jesse and won because of their social relationships.

I think the trustworthy thing comes from the fact Gabler was never a threat to anyone. He was always a number people could pull in so of course he was in an alliance with everyone on the jury at one point. He was never associated to a particular person or group so he was always a free agent to pick up. Cass was a threat the whole season and for a good part of it had her Coco majority.

There are two ways to see this season. The first is at plain value, in which Gabler and Cassidy both played similar games, Gabler marked less targets but more important targets: Ellie and Cody. The former set the merge up, the latter basically set Jesse dead in the water at the final 4. Cassidy marked Noelle, Sami, Karla and yes, also Ryan. Eliminating Jesse can also be contributed to her as she knew to send the right man to do the job. That being said, she didn't read the jury well at all, as they respected bolder games. Gabler didn't do much, but that fire win was enough. The difference isn't great, and the stellar premerge and personality is still enough for me to like her more. That being said, the edit set us up to believe Karla really did poison the jury. Why did they show her vote to Gabler? Why did they even show the conversation before Karla was voted off? To give the impression that this is what caused Cassidy's loss. The jury laughing a little too blatantly from Gabler's jokes, softballing him and giving Cassidy mean looks - way before she "blew it" with the Ryan vote (which might not even be a mistake at all!) - the bitterness was clearly there. If the jury was indeed a farce, and it's partly a speculation, the edit possibly undermined a better game than we saw. Not significantly better, unless the jury was really predetermined not to let Cass win, but better still. I don't even want to get to misogyny, but it appears that is also a vibe set by the edit. One thing we can all expect from this, is that the producers loved Cassidy and she will almost certainly be a returnee one day. I hope we'll then see a far better game as she was way better than Parvati and Sarah on their first seasons, and we all know how amazing they were when they returned...

LFG! GABLER SWEEEEEEPP!!!!! Favorite moment was when he said, "It's Gablin' time," and then Gablered all over everyone! But seriously, I stopped watching the season after the double boot simply because it had gotten so predictable. I'd check the results each week after the show only to read that everything I predicted to happen did. Like, I predicted Cody's 6th place boot immediately when Jesse revealed his 2 idols. At first, I was convinced f3 would be Karla winning, Cassidy 2nd, & Jesse 0 votes due to Cody being hurt/bitter. Then I saw the reaction fans were having to Cassidy online and thought that she'd probably lose at fire and Owen would get 2nd. Gabler winning was a complete shock and gave me a reason to watch the episodes I skipped. The only sad part is that I thought Gabler had a chance to win pre-season, but didn't draft him & picked Cassidy as my last choice (other than the ones I didn't think could win, funnily enough, that included both Jesse & Karla). I imagine I'm part of a small group that ever saw any scenarios where he could win, so I've been kicking myself over not going with my gut.

I wrote Gabler off as a goat until around Final 6 or 7 and then I realized he really might be the AlliGabler

Maybe not an all time great player throughout, but most definitely a strong finisher, especially in fire and FTC.

I have to laugh at the casual fans who thought Cass would win. It’s obvious these people don’t understand that the show is selectively edited, and they clearly don’t understand the importance of establishing relationships with the jury, who ultimately chooses the winner. Also, Owens fatal mistake was taking Cass with him on reward, dude wanted a date with a girl so bad for the first time in his life that he nuked his own game. AliGabler played a near perfect game.

Gabler was fabulous but I listened to the podcasters and others and believe them. We can assume a mature 50+ man cannot win, no ageism, experience, truth and honesty. Trust and social.

Survivor is garbage now and the editors do a terrible job telling what's actually going on.
