This video covers the final assembly of this pre-amplifier. The chassis used was one I found on ebay, not sure if these are readily available or not. Any chassis 7X11 inches internally should work for this.
I do have the schematic and the initial BOM up on my website, but obviously isn't a "final" version yet as I'm still testing this!

This is a project I am excited about as this is something a lot of folks have asked about: a tube pre-amplifier. This is a clone of a Conrad Johnson pre-amp that uses four 12AX7 tubes. Zero-zone sells this already built for $260ish, but I wanted to build this myself using known quality components and my own layout.
Also as part of this pre-amp series, a viewer is sent me two other China pre-amps, that are already assembled for me to "upgrade", and then do a shootout between them all at the end!

Your channel is great. I am learning a lot and looking forward to building a preamp after the first of the year. I too want to do a high pass filter output for an amp in order to drive Magnepans and do a standard output or low pass for the stereo subs.

Thanks Skunkie for all your insparation and direction. I saw in your shootout video that the tube amp on the right did very well. Do you or anyone else know where I could get the initial kit to build it. I love the fact that its all tube and no solid state. Thanks once again. Keep up the good work. Diligence

Nice video. I just completed soldering my board from the same zerozone you are using when I saw you started this series. Sound is quite good to my ears but there is very low hum about 50 or 60 hz audible from my speaker. Can't wait to hear your result.

Nice and clean build. Please keep us updated on the ground plane experiment. I missed the 6sn7 preamp video, but could not find it at the website. I would like to try that one.

im just about to start to build this with realy high end componants. What are your thoughts on sound quality and did you ever add a sub out. also what led did you use under the tubes or did you leave them blank

Beautiful wiring and board. Where did you get the tube rings? I'm building a tube guitar pre-amp that that's a lot classier than rubber grommets.

Thanks! I got the "rings" from Amazon, they are 1 inch grommets like you would see on the corners of a tarp. smile.amazon.com/dp/B07CQXTX38

On the schematics provided it doesn't show the value of resistor for negative feedback, it literally is not printed on the page the line just stops, can you tell me what you did for that please. Attempting to build this preamplifier.

I built this using this board, it looks like from this schematic (someone else drew it) that there is no resistor between those two points.

Put a 333pF Y capacitor to ground clean up cut out any hum you will need two one for the transformer one for the board ground
@SkunkieDesignsElectronics
@SkunkieDesignsElectronics 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not seeing that just placing a capacitor between the board and ground would give any safety improvements over just leaving the ground plane on the board floating, it still wouldn't blow the fuse is there was a component failure. Here is a good article and no, you should never "ground lift" the transformer core. sound-au.com/earthing.htm#s6

@johnsweda2999 2 жыл бұрын
Nothing about safety improvements! just about lowering the noise floor and interference you were talking about hum. Not sure what the rest of it is you're talking about got to do with the price of fish. There's no ground lifting
