I own hifiman 400i headphones. no quality issues at all. sturdy, cables are well constructed and as far as i can tell not in any way prone to failure. i love these headphones. comfortable enough to wear for extended periods. best sounding cans i've ever owned. at their price point, you'll be hard pressed to do better.

Yep! You must have an older production run model of the 400i which was built wonderfully. The 400i and Bryston is still the best combo I've ever heard. Really do love the headphone. Just wish HiFiMan would get their act together. Audio Advice doesn't even carry their products anymore.

@Immortal Hey man it was the Bryston BHA-1 which you can find here: www.moon-audio.com/bryston-bha-1-balanced-headphone-amplifier.html It was just an amazing audio experience. There are really no words for it, though I've talked about the encounter many times on this channel and my blog. I'm about to upload the DEVA review here in a bit. I would go with that. Actually just emailed a rep who's been sending me stuff for demo. He told me it was a myth. Here's the transcript: "Hi there, they are mistaken. The only change was the glue used on the Sundara's pads. No stealth revisions, lol unless the glue change counts :-) There was a guy that declared there was but we have clarified with him, not sure why he thought there was much difference but you know, people." Not sure who he was referring to. I guess a glue fix is okay, since that was a main issue. But what about the cabling issues. Kind of frustrating. I'm probably going to inquire about that here in a bit.

Only if sundara didn't have qc issues. One of the major part the hd 600 series was considered legendery is because it was so reliable. People have used it over 10years and all parts are user replaceable. These planars probably won't last 2 years. Some people have reported sundara having driver failure in less than a month. If hifman can't make them reliable anytime soon ,then they should give them 2 year warrenty at least.
@HomeStudioBasics
@HomeStudioBasics 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah it pisses me off for sure. I didn't have any issues with the Sundara but of course I've also never owned one. I did experience problems with the Ananda's cutting out on the left or right ear cup. I too have read reviews similar to what you mention, and also cabling issues seem to be consistent across some reviews as well. I think it's still possible to get a good model Sundara considering all of the positive reviews out there, but the odds you'll end up with a lemon are way higher than if you went with something else like the 600's. You're exactly right about the HD600. I've had mine since 2016 and it still looks and functions flawlessly. It's very disappointing to me that HiFiMan won't sack up and fix their f'ing headphones. Like it makes me mad just thinking about it because these same issues are present in many different product lines and iterations of newer models. What is so f'in hard about just rectifying whatever issue is there? It would likely take very little actual work to do but it seems like they want to use certain cheap materials and then sell them at exorbitant prices instead. The Sundara was a huge leap forward 2 years ago but now it seems like in retrospect it really wasn't considering that the same problems keep occurring.

FANTASTIC sound comparison! The graphic and info are both super helpful in understanding sound signatures. What I think about the sound of the 4xx is that they are a bit ouchy in terms of treble...but the detail is amazeballs. For that experience alone, they've been useful to a noob like me. I wish I'd seen this video first though, I'd have gotten the Sundara. Well, unless I had read the comments. UGH! What a shame that QC is so bad. :/

AKG doesn't seem to get enough love. Recently picked up the AKG K712 Pro and these are pretty amazing headphones. Especially if you want a triple threat headphone that does gaming and movies incredibly well too. I know most reviewers say the Sundara are the best bang for the buck headphone out there... but the HIFIMan Quality Control scares me. I'd say the K712 Pro's are the best bang for the buck headphone in that price range. If it came down to choosing between the K712 Pro's and the Sundara... My HE4XX had cable issues two months after purchase. And this was after minimal use over those two months. Basically the left side's cable connector isn't great, and when the cable has any resistance, or rests against anything and has to bend a bit, the sound can cut out. I was wearing a jacket and the sound kept cutting out, and I realised it was because the cable was pushing against the top of the jacket just after it exits the port. It still happens but I just make sure to keep still and not wear anything that may get in the cable's way so that it can go straight through to the amp. I'll have to buy a replacement cable when the left side properly gives out though, and I just hope its the cable and not the connector in the left cup that's wonky. More importantly - how many grandchildren do you have?

Hey man! Yeah I've been trying to warn people about the 4XX a lot lately. I would go with the 2020 Revision 400i or DEVA at this point, with the third option being Sundara if you really want to take a gamble. Sundara's QC is better than 4XX for sure, but you still may have issues. I think for the most part they've ironed them out though. Don't quote me on that. I can absolutely recommend the DEVA or 2020 though. Both fantastic headphones. I have 4 grandchildren and they are the bees knees! Thank you for asking :) Let me know what you think about all this.

@@HomeStudioBasics hehe good to know about the other models, thanks. I intend to get another planar but need something a bit more exciting and dynamic than the 4XX (and more comfortable - the earpads are a bit small for me are on the 4XX because of how thick the sides are), so yeah, looking at the LCD-1, but many people say it's overrated so I'm hesitant. Better imaging would be nice too as that isn't very strong on my 4XX, after testing it in competitive FPS games against the DT 770 and HD 660S. It could be due to the flatter signature too, but it's hard to say. Good thing you haven't forgotten your grandchildren yet! You look great for a grandparent too! :p what do you use for wrinkles?

Thank you my friend! I just reached out to HIFIMAN about the new model. Man does that look sweet. Thanks for the head up! If it's anything like the DEVA, (and the build looks identical), then yeah it's going to be a huge improvement as far as quality is concerned. Hey man! You're welcome! I'd probably skip the 4XX. QC and build issues out the a**. Just forget about that one. I'd either go with Sundara, 2020 400i revision, or DEVA. DEVA if you want all that Bluetooth stuff, 2020 400i for a crisper, brighter sound, and Sundara for something warmer with less treble bite. It's very relaxed sounding. Both the DEVA and 2020 revision 400i fix all the build and QC issues with the others. With the Sundara, there's still the potential for problems, but the odds are more in your favor that you'll get a good one.

Hey man! Wow that's kind of a toughie, but I would personally go 6XX. Better build, no treble spike. Those are the main differences. The planar sound is certainly quite amazing, but there are build issues with the 4XX so it may just break down on you. 6XX is a rock solid product and has been in some form or fashion for a long time. It's a better long term investment I would say. Sound is just perfect, in fact it's the perfect snapshot representation of the hobby. You'll always keep it around for reference vs. other headphones as it is kind of a benchmark.. Let me know what you decide! The only thing I didn't like was the stiff noisy stock cable (just ordered a custom one) and the plasticy build can creak when I move around too much. But the sound is god like. @@HomeStudioBasics I describe the Sundara's as "Whispery" when it comes to the rock/metal frequencies, those are about 2-3 desibels below target from 1500 Hz to 2750 Hz, and 5.5 desibels below target at around 5750 hz, making those genres sound very recessed and soulless compared to every other genre. It does every other genre perfectly, it's just it has very slight dips in the very specific frequencies that rock/metal consists of... However... With Equalizer APO + Peace (totally free and works like a charm), fixing it it is very possible, with some effort, i've managed to bring back the soul in rock/metal, and somehow it also defined the edges of EDM too, so now Infected Mushroom sounds mindblowingly good, moreso than before, lmao. xD

@@axchisler "You guys make them sound like they suffer from the "Sennheiser veil."" Spoken like someone who doesn't know what the sennheiser veil even is. "I listen to a lot of 80's metal and I find they sound great for that genre." The sennheiser veil makes the sound a bit 2-dimensional and adds an ever so slight distortion, or... grain? It's hard to describe with my shtty vocabulary. The sennheiser veil, compliments rock music, exceedingly well, as rock music gets ENHANCED by adding some, let's call it "dirt" to the track, it's messy and fun music, so adding more mess, just makes it more fun... Sennheiser veil, IS that dirt. That's why rock sounds so good on most sennheiser headphones... And honestly, i'm not even sure it's a Sennheiser veil, i'm pretty sure it's just a dynamic driver veil. I find the same qualities coming out of other brands of dynamic headphones, same thing with Beyerdynamics, as well as Focals. Something you don't get with planars, like the Sundara. :P Hence why the Sundara sounds abit off when listening to Rock music, when you've been listening to the Sennheiser veil, your entire life, up until that point, of course. :P I now realize, the Sundara is actually just presenting the track as it really is.

Hey man! Hmm. I think it depends on the type of flavor you're after. The K702 is snappier, and a bit more open, with greater depth and width to the image. It has a better Soundstage I would say. The mid-range is also going to be more forward with instruments and vocals. I personally find it a perfect balance. Not too shouty. Same goes with the treble. I find it has just the right amount of sparkle and never gets out of line, sibilant, or essy. I can wear a K702 for hours without a hint of musical fatigue. Bass wise, there's a nice mid-bass bump which is also done perfectly for me. There is a bit of roll off in the sub bass regions, but I don't really mind it. The Sundara rolls off around the same as the K702 give or take, but has less overall mid-bass emphasis. You'll find the Sundara is more relaxed in the mid-range and sometimes sounds a tad too syrupy for my tastes, though I still consider it one of the top 5 best under $500. Same goes for the 702. The Sundara reminds me of a 650 in the way it kind of tries to lull you to sleep. It's uber relaxation mode. The treble on the Sundara is also darker as well. Overall, the Sundara is pretty warm and smoothed over, while the K702 is crisper, livelier, and snappier. Instrument Timbre is where these 2 really shine, especially with acoustic passages and Jazz. I've always said that the planar sound does tend to outperform a dynamic in this regard, but man is it ever close. The 702 sounds eerily close to being as good as a planar with respect to Timbre, but I think the Sundara does slightly edge it. What do you think? For me it depends on my mood. I find myself reaching for a K702 more often than my other headphones, and I think it's because it somehow manages to sound both crisp and natural at the same time. Do keep in mind that the 702 is not going to be one of those headphones you'll want to push really hard. It doesn't respond well when you try and blast it, so that may factor into your decision. The Sundara may provide more slam for you if that's what you're after. Still, I can't get over how "true" and how "right" the 702 is in all regards. A great all around genre performer. What do you think? Check out the article as well: homestudiobasics.com/the-5-best-audiophile-headphones-for-under-500/

Hey man I am still struggling if I should try out the Sundara. I have the K702 and I love them, though sometimes they seem a bit too wide. I also had HD600 and DT880 but I didn't like both. Too intimate on the HD600 and too punchy bass on the DT880. Should I try to get these as an upgrade to my K702's ? @@HomeStudioBasics So you think that with EQ (which I always use) I could get a better experience with the DEVA right? Cause they look a lot more comfortable Edit: Reviews online are a bit weird, some say the soundstage is worse than the Sundara, some say its better, so I have no clue in that regards, same with the bass, some say its better, some worse. How would you explain it? I definitely like soundstage, well I like a big, roomy sound actually, though the K702 souns slightly diffuse.
@HomeStudioBasics
@HomeStudioBasics 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah man the DEVA is a marked improvement in comfort. I haven't once had to adjust or take them off my head for any reason, and I've been demoing them for months now! The bass is a tad light, but I just EQ it. You saw the video I linked, I assume? It's important to note that the roll off isn't crazy or anything, but yeah, it can benefit from some sub bass meat. I don't always need the EQ preset, but I use it sometimes. Soundstage on the DEVA is above average but not as grand or wide as something like a K702. You will have some out of your head moments, but it's not going to happen all the time if that makes sense. Sundara isn't worse or better really, it's just a matter of flavor. The comparison also goes into this. I wouldn't personally pay much attention to people that would nit pick about the differences in the bass. To me that's just silly. They both roll off roughly the same. The Sundara isn't magically better, and neither is the DEVA. It's important to note that sound signatures from the same manufacturer in a similar line rarely deviate that much from the house sound. The differences in the treble are absolutely there, but overall they follow a similar trajectory with regards to the frequency spectrum. Hope that helps! Let me know :)

@@HomeStudioBasics I finally got the Deva here. They are a bit weird to me. I like that the soundstage is not too wide like my K702, but the problem I have with the Deva is that they never sound focused. They always sound distant and muffled but also harsh in the upper treble. Is this just a Hifiman/Deva thing or a planar thing, that the sound all seems a bit too unfocused and far away? Planars have great bass though. What I did not say the first comment is, that I am searching for a headphone with a "big" sound like the deva but with a great center image and awesome string texture. I couldn't find any other headphone with great string sounds. Most headphones miss the reverb effect strings should produce and the AKG does it the best. Any ideas what else I could try?

I love those headphones because of how detailed it is and how crisp the highs are, along with a quick, precise, and detailed bass. Definitely sound better with the analytical pads too. But if I try and turn up the volume to get more immersed, it can be a little too shrill at times and give me a head ache, and be a little to detailed at points. If I can crank the volume and also enjoy nice detailed highs without it hurting, then that'll be awesome. I'm curious to how much more open the soundstage is since the 1990s are more semi open back headphones.

Hey man! The Sundara's cups are similar, but I believe the original 400S had the pads without the protein leather (gosh I can't remember the actual name), while the Sundara's use the Focus pads (with the leather). The pad issue is apparent in all of them unfortunately (they all flatten out). Are you asking if you should get a Sundara? It is built much better than the original 400i and 400S. You could also go for a 2020 revision 400i which utilizes the same amazing updated build as the DEVA. Both the DEVA's signature and the 2020 400i are similar to the original 400S and 400i, while the Sundara's sound is warmer with more relaxed treble. So to sum up, I think for you it's either Sundara or 2020 400i. Just decide on which sound signature you'd rather have. :) Let me know if that helps!

Hey man thanks! As far as quality, I still prefer the Sundara's somewhat smoothed over warmth (similar to the relationship between 650 and 600). the 4XX's treble does kind of bother me but apart from that it's a fantastic sound. There are certain songs that will just be too treble happy/bitey/sibilant but perhaps it's more song dependent. Still, if you look at a graph there's a clear peak and it does need to come down some. You could always mod it or EQ 9-10k down a bit. I would still personally prefer a Sundara long term though. Let me know what you think!!

@@HomeStudioBasics I agree with everything you said about the 4XX - I sense too the treble is metallic in timbre at times, I've also EQd down the 8500-9500hz region, but reduced 200-250hz region as well which sounded resonant to my ears (maybe it's just my cans). I've just recently sort of joined in on this audiophile thing, I currently have a pair of DT990 pro's with a Fiio K5pro amp/dac, I enjoy this pairing quite a bit but there are definitely a lot of issues I have with the DT's. Mainly the treble is a bit too hot, even after EQ and it has this very unnatural sound to a lot of things, although that part is mostly fixed with an EQ. I'm wondering if the Sundaras would be a good upgrade, currently in AU they're $500, however the HD600 is $450, I'm a bit concerned with the HD600 as I think I typically do prefer a little bit more treble than those have, although I haven't heard them before. Mainly asking as currently we can only order things online so I don't have a chance to test either of these out. Lastly would the K5 pro be fine with the sundara? As a side note the He400i 2020 edition is $250, so half the price of either

Hey man, I just discovered your channel and this video is just what I needed. I just bought the HD 400is two weeks ago and love them so far. Right now I'm using them for my IPhone but with the Schiit Fulla 3 powering them and I find that for most of my listening (through a Spotify) the Fulla 3 powers them plenty loud. But every now and then I hit a song that I'd like to pump louder, but I simply can't. Also, I just tried to use them with my PS4 (again using the Fulla 3's line in connected to my PS4 controller with 3.5mm sux cable) and while they were certainly at a listenable volume, I'd prefer it to be quite a bit louder, but I guess the Fulla 3 only has but so much power. If I were to get the Dragonfly red, and connect that to the Fulla 3's line-in, do you think I'd get a significant boost in volume while listening through my phone? Idk if there'd be anyway to get it to work with the PS4, but if it could beef up the volume from my phone (in conjunction with the Fulla or to the point that I wouldn't need to use the Fulla) then I'd consider it a worthy purchase.

Hey man! You're fulla schiit. LOL. I made a funny! My advice would be to get rid of that schiit. Haha. Seriously though I took a quick look at specs and 400mW into 16 Ohm is about the same as the Zen so I can see what you mean. The Zen does have a gain button. Does the Fulla? The DragonFly Red is always a good purchase my friend. I did try it with the PS4 and it doesn't really get loud enough but somehow does work. It just takes a bit of fiddling to get it to come through your audio settings. Kind of not really recommended though. I've also tried running the DragonFly Red from the PS4 into something else via line and it didn't really do much. So as for your question, no. It's still dependent on the amp really. If you were to get a DragonFly Red you wouldn't really have a need for the Fulla, at least power wise. The Fulla is really versatile though. So yeah, you wouldn't need the Fulla anymore from a volume standpoint. I might suggest getting a dedicated gaming rig for your PS4 though. Does that sound like something you'd be interested in?

Well, you're Albert Einstein. Shouldn't you know the answer to this question already? Why are you asking me, the lowly servant? HAHA! Just kidding man. Yeah I would be inclined to say so. The Sundara is warmer, and warmer is ALWAYS better when it comes to Classical, trust me. I've been having issues for months now trying to find a good headphone for the Genre. K612 is good, probably better than K702 because 612 is a bit warmer. The SHP9600 is also very good because it's a bit smoother and warmer. Noticing a trend? Sundara is also fairly smooth and warmed over. I just find that these types of headphones jive well with Classical because of it's volatile nature and tendency to go from quiet to loud in a hurry. Most neutral headphones don't handle this very well. I had heard some years back that a somewhat heavier low end also helps, and I kind of scoffed at the notion at the time. Looking back, I can honestly say whomever wrote that was spot on. A bit of extra bass does indeed help, and the Sundara certainly has great low end extension. So yeah, I think so! 400i is a bit too essy in the treble for me at times, while the Sundara is def more laid back. I say go for it! I'm listening to some Debussy right now actually :)

Hey man they're all roughly the same as far as Soundstage goes. Bass is roughly the same as well. I'd purchase based on QC/reliability. Go with the 2020 revision and don't look back! It mimics the same updated build of the DEVA and is very well constructed.

What about *only* using a DFR to power one of these?
@HomeStudioBasics
@HomeStudioBasics 3 жыл бұрын
Hey man that will be fine as it has plenty of power. As far as pairings, Sundara + Red will be very ideal as the Red is open, clear, and crisp sounding so it kind of helps with the Sundara being a bit overly warm at times. With the 400i, 400S, and 4XX, maybe the combo is a bit too much since those are brighter cans but I still love the Red and use one often i.e. it's not going to matter much to you as the difference is subtle. DF Red is always a great choice! Nowadays I mostly use it as a DAC into other amps because I demo lots of stuff, but it's very valuable and reliable.

Hybrid or leather Dekoni pads if I have the 4xx?
@HomeStudioBasics
@HomeStudioBasics 4 жыл бұрын
Hybrids are the replica of the Focus pads right?dekoniaudio.com/product/dekoni-audio-elite-hybrid-earpads-for-select-hifiman-headphones/ I personally prefer those over the Sheepskin's actually. It's not that the Sheep's are not comfortable, but I just like how the other ones feel on my head. It's softer, and more intimate. It feels like a warm hug whereas the Sheep's feel kind of like your cold Uncle Harry who never asks you how your life is going. LOL.

Looking for an upgrade from shp 9500. Is 4xx a good enough ? I'm worried about the treble spikes
@HomeStudioBasics
@HomeStudioBasics 4 жыл бұрын
Hey man! Outside of that peak it's pretty much a perfect headphone. Do you EQ at all? I'd just lower 8-10k by a few dB and you should be fine. I think it would be a great upgrade as planars do tend to outperform a dynamic headphone in pretty much every way. Plus it's freakin' dirt cheap like they're almost giving it away at this point. To get a planar for that price is a steal and will be a great introduction into them.

No worries! I mean if you're coming from a 9500 you'll likely enjoy the bass and find it has a bit more impact. I wouldn't call it bass light, but it's definitely not going to slam or anything. I really enjoy the articulation of a 400 series bass to be honest. Are you a bass head? Also if you get a 4XX through my drop link in the description it helps out the site and channel. @HomeStudioBasics
@HomeStudioBasics 3 жыл бұрын
Hey man! I haven't A/B'd those, but it's interesting to note that both only roll off by about 5dB in the bass, so there's plenty of extension. I think the Sundara has some of the best bass articulation of all the mid-fi headphones I've heard. It's really a dream. Sundara is always a proper buy, and I think the stealth revision improved on the issues that were apparent in some earlier models. I noticed the ratings on Amazon have improved tremendously and was just talking with someone about it yesterday. Check out my Top 5 Under $500. I already have a HD6xx, ATH-AD900x, & 300MMX G2(muh games). I have a HA204 amp/splitter with a BTR5 on the way. I'll get a Drop THX 789 later. I'm looking for an Classical/Opera/Choral music phone. It's down to HE4xx, DT880 250 ohm.. and K7xx kinda third. I'm bi-curious about the Planar sound signature and what it's great for. Recommendations anyone?
@HomeStudioBasics
@HomeStudioBasics 4 жыл бұрын
I'd probably swing towards K7XX for that. My issue with classical is that it's super super picky about headphones and a lot of the time gets shrill, at least with stuff like Debussy in my experience. A bright headphone for me with Classical is a no go. There ends up being way too much volume adjusting and headache. I've found the K702/K612 does best with it per my exp. A planar like the 4XX/DEVA/Sundara wold def be a close second though. What kind of Classical do you prefer?

Next is Opera, Nessum Dorma Pavarotti, Night Queen Diana Damrau, Flower Duet so heavenly lol. I also like piano like Moonlight Sonata, Claire De Lune. I do have to run down the ATH AD-900x volume compared to 6xx. And this is on my old ass HA204 splitter "amp." You think still K7xx? I still wonder how close it is to ATH AD-900x. I might add movie watching, but not as important.

My pleasure man! I really liked the 900x but it was kind of dry for my tastes like almost dull in a way. K7xx series variants have an unmistakable flavor that I just really enjoy. Keep in mind I haven't heard a 900x in a couple of years though. So you're trying to decide if getting a 7xx would be better than you're 900x?

@@HomeStudioBasics I see. I'm about to bite the bullet on a THX 789 AAAAAAAA. No DAC yet, maybe GSX 1000 or Smsl SU-8(dunno if it's customizability is my thing). Final question do you think the K7xx would be closer sound signature to the AD900x compared to 4xx??? People seem like to talk about 4xx clarity(neutrality?), but lack of imaging. more than 7xx? I have a co-worker with a HE 400i. I might try that before deciding. I do hear K7xx is decent for orchestra, decent for competitive gaming FPS (but Metro Exodus + Dolby Atmos + HD6xx is dashit!!), great for movies.

No no! The 400S is very good. I actually prefer it over the 4XX. It's a bit cooler sounding than the Sundara. Vs. teh 400i, also a tad cooler and more laid back. I don't feel like the treble on it is quite as essy as the 400i which is why I really love it. I found myself being able to wear it for quite a bit without any musical fatigue. Yeah they are basically giving the 2020 400i away lol. I want to get one real soon. I mean pads are going to wear out regardless, but yeah the originals on the 400S do flatten out quite a bit. I love how they feel though. The newer pads will probably last a bit longer, so I could see that. The cable also does fray on the 400S. Thing is, the DEVA's cable is about the same. Could be a bit better as far as that goes. Only time will tell. I think the 2020 400i has the same cable as DEVA, but don't quote me on that. I don't mind the DEVA's although it's a bit stiff and rigid for my tastes. Listening now actually :) Haven't listened to the 400S in quite a while (since this video), but the DEVA is fantastic for movies. I think you're really going to love the 2020 400i. Keep me posted!
