I have gotten AMS twice and in both cases I had overexerted myself significantly while at altitude. I will never forget it...chills, confusion, no appetite, and a general feeling of just wanting lay down and not move. I am in much better shape now and want to try San Gorgonio (11.5k) and White Mountain Peak (14.2k). I am going to take it very easy and slow once I get above 9k

Question! You exerted yourself to soon? Or weeks after because if so I could understand that but if not what elevation were you traveling from please

@@colecanning747 I exerted myself too hard while at altitude. I can be idle at altitude just fine. I just can’t exert myself otherwise I get sick. went from sea level and tried a monster hike at 9000ft and got pretty sick. Ive done hikes since much higher and been fine so i know now to just take it slow

@@bostinaycock8316 did you sleep at these 9000ft or just ascended and the same day climbed? Once I did exactly the same change as you described, from the sea level to 9100ft (in a bus) and then climbed to 11500ft, then descended back to the sea level all in one day. I didn't sleep at altitude and everything went very well and I wasn't very fit, just in normal shape. But in other year I went from the sea level to about 5700ft, slept there 3 days and climbed to 7100ft. Or rather tried to climbed but I was sooo weak like never before in my life. That was strange. I think every individual can react different way in different moment. There are probably so many factors than can influence your body.

Very informative video. Just wanted to clarify one thing though. Is it a bad idea to sleep at higher altitudes primarily? It wasn't entirely clear in the lecture.

Are blood types a risk factor in getting altitude sickness?
@justriley9157
@justriley9157 4 жыл бұрын
no , not likley unless some blood types dont reproduce or increase red blood cells faster than others. Not aware of any studies of that some blood types are better than others in that way of being a natural defect or unadaptive to AMS

Excellent video! I wouldn't have loved it as much if I wasn't doing higher altitudes from sea-level. Highly recommend when taking a trip like this.
