@@DavidKnowles0 It has nothing to do with law abiding citizens, because it isnt illegal to drive a high emmission vehicle in the zone, you just have to pay for the privilege. Low income people cant afford to change their cars, they either have to pay the charge or are forced off the road and into overcrowded extortionally expense public transport. Drivers of large engined SUVs or sports cars etc some of which have the highest emmisions, dont care they just pay the charge, who can blame them. The only way this works as a way to reduce vehicle emmissions is to ban ICE vehicles completely, and that includes Sadiq Khan's £300,000 five-litre V8 armoured Range Rover, he is driven to work in every day and make it EVs only.

@@XTSu-sl1bbeven with today's grid an EV produces only 1/3 of the emissions of an ICE car, including manufacture and running it. By 2035 we are due to have a totally fossil fuel free power grid. @adrianthoroughgood1191
@adrianthoroughgood1191 Жыл бұрын
@@XTSu-sl1bb One of the best ways to pressure other countries to do more is to reduce our emissions to shame them into catching up. It is unfortunate that China is building new coal plants but did you know that China has more solar and wind generation than any other country? They are second for nuclear. Their renewables plus nuclear is almost enough to cover the usage of their population. Their fossil fuel generation is mostly to power factories making stuff for us. Even ignoring that aspect their emissions per person are still only about half that of the US. Hopefully these coal plants will mostly only be used as backup power when needed with most electricity coming from low carbon sources, like how coal is mostly only used for backup in the UK. Then their emissions will be a fraction of a full time plant. India is moving to solar in a big way. They also a leading research in thorium power as they have huge deposits of that. The GCC's own emissions are not all that large as their populations are quite small. They mostly export FF for others. Personally I am in favour of focussing on reducing the need for FF rather than restricting supply as high prices hurt poor people who haven't managed to change over yet. The other thing we could do is introduce a price for carbon. That could be applied both to fossil fuel production and import, and to import of goods produced using fossil fuels. That would give an incentive for other countries to reduce their fossil fuel usage the make their exports more competitive. If you take the money from the carbon tax and distribute it equally to all citizens then those who use less than the average amount will be financially better off.

The traffic it will affect most is long haul trucks who can't switch to electric because of the distances they need to cover. The £12 a day won't be swallowed by the exporters, the haulage companies, or the importers. It will just get added to the price of everything that is imported. This is a nuanced debate. I completely agree with the overall spirit of the Ulez. We need to reduce the pollutants we’re putting in the air, reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and move towards greener options. Climate change is real and we do need to act now. That said, putting this burden on the poorest in society is heinous. The average electric car costs £33,000 (or £22k avg. second hand) whereas the average petrol/diesel car £19,000 (or 12k avg. second hand) according to auto trader. The poorest members of our society simply don’t stand a chance. The government should better invest in schemes to make it much more beneficial for all drivers to buy electric, have low emission cars or have car conversions. Mechanics like that gentlemen shown will have business boom if the government had legitimate schemes to convert classic cars to electric (it would perhaps require some up-skilling at first maybe, but his business wouldn’t be half the value. I’ve driven for over 20+ years and gave up my car 8 years ago because I moved to London and the cost of keeping it was just too high. For many with the extension of the Ulez this will become the same. I hope the overall goal is met but the government mustn’t do this in isolation it needs more. My fear is they (the government) will do what they always do - say we have to make “hard decisions” meaning they’ll charge/tax the poor and working class and do nothing to properly support the average person. There’s more I could say on this, but that’s long enough for 1 post.

@@Jammyg1t on modern EVs with temperature management the battery degradation is actually very low. Yes you lose a bit over time so range is reduced, but it still works. Old cars with reduced range will feed into a cheaper second hand market. The batteries last long enough that you don't even need to replace them in most cases as they last as long as the cars expected service life. Some cars are built in such a way as to make replacing the battery difficult but most are not. It is untrue to say you can't replace them. In some cars eg Teslas, you can even refurbish the battery by replacing just some of the cells rather than the whole battery. EV batteries can also be used for fixed storage after being removed from cars. When they finally can'teven be used for that after around 25 years they can be recycled.
