I've made it to the late game in the High Elf campaign as Tyrion. I have been using the Sea Guard with shields as my front line with support from Swordmasters of Hoeth. My typical plan is to send a ranged chariot or two out to skirmish and draw off some of the enemy units while the rest of my line protects a pair of bolt throwers. When the enemy gets in range my Sea Guard open up on them and typically do a good amount of damage against the lower armor units. Then when the lines collide I send in the Swordmasters, who were just behind the front line, to go and rip apart anything that is left. I use a mage and loremaster for support and then try to use Shielded Silver Helms to hammer and anvil or attack artillery or ranged units. This battle plan has worked well but lately I have fought a lot of Pyrrhic Victories or Valiant Defeats against the Dark Elves and Chaos. The problem is typically monstrous units like giants or feral manticores, or heavy infantry like the Chaos Chosen. All of those rip my Sea Guard to shred and I don't have enough Swordmasters to deal with them when the enemy starts using Chosen as their standard front line units (as in the case of Chaos). I am planning to bring in Phoenix Guard once I can but it is getting frustrating having to rebuild armies when the Dark Elves come calling. My armies have no trouble against the Skaven but the Heavy Infantry and Monsters of the Dark Elves and Chaos are giving me fits.

About dragon breaths, everything you said is true ! I might add : when firing at a lord or heroe, makes sure to get right on top of them to maximize damage. They'll often tumble around (weird effect when a DRAGON FIRES AT YOU, y'know) resulting in missed fire, whereas pinning them in place from above makes more flammes connect to your small target...
@pierre-mariecaulliez62856 жыл бұрын
Also, artillery crew is too spread out for you to cause any significant damage with any dragon breath... In that case, you're better off breathing on their escort and then murder them in honorable claw to hand combat ;7

Remember watching this in 2018 after playing my first campaign as them. Those Lothern Sea guard stacks were they joy back then when I was very poor at it, now there are sisters of avelorn, the best infantry unit of the game(including wh3) and the HE in campaigns are still pretty much unstoppable if you know what you are doing. The worst thing about HE is you'll never be quite satisfied with other races basic military since the HE are so damn efficient and all their settlements are incredibly strong and easy to defend thanks to every unit being quality over quantity. Sieges in general can be a headache for most races, not for HE though, since they can outrange most units, especially after early game when you get your sisters doomstacks that shred everything.

IMO one of the main weaknesses of this faction is to anything that does non-melee damage (magic, range, siege, etc). The passive really just gives melee def. If you get the health of the unit low fast it will be easy to get around that buff.

Dragon micro- management: TBH if your enemies haven't routed before your dragon's ten-second charge bonus has expired you're probably doing it wrong. Pin them with spears, decimate with breath attack, then charge in rear and watch them rout. Rinse and repeat.
@bryanbehr84586 жыл бұрын
In the case of the dragon fire damage variance it has to do with the angle of your shot more than anything. As you mention when you discuss hitting lengthwise instead of head on, you want to maximize your coverage of the unit with your fire, and at the proper elevation for as long as possible. In general you want your dragon firing across the unit like that directly in line, but at the greatest possible distance in order to maximize your damage. To see this at its most useful take a dragon to a siege, and fire at units on the steps going up the gatehouse while as far away(but still directly above the wall) as you can be. You can essentially completely destroy 3+ units with a single breath attack and good positioning.

I'd have a Doomstack of three armies at all times, Tyrion, Teclis, and Alaster With Tyrion, I say he's best with some Phoenix Guard, Lothern Sea Guard (Shield), Dragon Princes, a noble, and a couple spears for the flanks, maybe a pair of phoenixes. Teclis could have a couple mages, a core of Swordmasters, Silver Helms with shields, and light armoured archers, as well as maybe a pair of star dragons. Alaster could have a core of White Lions, spears for the flanks, light armoured archers, Ithilmar Chariots, and a pair of eagles.
@Mathren16 жыл бұрын
Glad to see that I wasn't playing these guys incorrectly and that my use of Lothern Sea Guard wasn't super unorthodox. I was actually substituting some of my front line Spearmen out for Lothern Sea Guard and having them fire at incoming targets from the front line (with archers behind them also firing in) to help soften up the enemy, and then switching them to melee just before the armies meet. And then of course having White Lions or Swordmasters there to back them up on the damage front. It's pretty great too because if I find that my Sea Guard are taking a little bit too much of a beating on the front line than I'd like, I can withdraw them and leave the more melee-specialized units to cover for them, then switch the Lothern Sea Guard to skirmish. Love those guys.
@Zerkovich6 жыл бұрын
Doesn't sound like a bad plan potentially. I wondered if a Sea Guard frontline would be a bit wasteful of their ranged attack as it won't get much use before they're in melee.

In campaign I recommend dragon armies, ie: 12 Dragons, 6 Dragon Princes, 1 Life Mage, 1 General. This can kill any stack with ease, and be virtually at full strength at the end of battle. Yes it's expensive to maintain, but there's no downtime to replenish; it just blitzes constantly through enemy territory. Also it doesn't mind being ambushed. Hold the Dragon Princes in reserve to chase down skirmishing infantry. Send the Dragons in as a tight group, so a single AOE heal can heal them all. Against walls, simply fly the Dragons straight in, kill everything on the walls, then leapfrog into the backfield and kill the war machines. Keep the mage and dragon princes away from manned towers. If you feel like a good laugh, once the enemy has no ranged units, take your 12 Dragons on a leisurely tour within the walls, breathing fire on all those helpless ground units until they break.
