Some of my thoughts about Crunchyroll's recent original series.
I regret putting this much effort into the show.
This is my first attempt at making an actual video on something, and maybe I'll do more in the future.
Hopefully you enjoyed. :)

Hey! Thank you all so much for watching the video. I have some more videos planned, but I will not be putting them on this account. All new reviews and video essay style videos will be on my new channel: kzbin.info/door/EznB97XCAtSQsIrc_P_pyQ I didn't expect this video to get this big at all and I want to keep this channel as is and move on to a different channel where the content will be much more focused on the content I want to create and move away from the content already on this channel(most of it is unlisted for good reasons!) I hope those of you who liked this video will join me on the new account! Thanks :) New video soon.

And this is why so often lgbt “representation” in film comes under heavy fire from viewers. Instead of it being an actual character trait (and being depicted as such), it’s often shoved to the front in an aggressive and unrealistic way. It leaves viewers feeling like they just watched a propaganda piece, not a film, and that both leaves a bitter taste in their mouth _and_ can give them a stronger negative impression of the community as a whole.

A character going "hehe, I'm transgender" is such a dumb way of doing representation. As far as I've understood, trans people actually *don't* like to go around announcing they are trans, but would rather be treated like any other person? It just reeks of that stupid concept of "My whole personality is based on being gay/trans/bi/whatever". How about making an interesting character who happens to be trans? Maybe explore their transness in a humanizing way instead of having them go "Oh teehee I'm trans btw", effectively just having the trait be a representation sticker? This is 'token black character' all over again.

The thing about representation, as a LGBTQ+ person, is that having undeniable, nonvague representation where a character just comes out and says it, is great. And very important to have, as many LGBTQ+ characters are only given vague references that are easily overlooked by anyone not searching for it. Sometimes falling into the JK Rowling pitfall of only ever being confirmed on twitter. But when a character is made gay, or Trans, or anything similar and is then never given any personality or substance beyond it, then it becomes extremely harmful fast. We, as a community are not a box you can check off in your media projects so you can brag about how progressive and open minded you are, we are people who happen to be LGBTQ+, It is not a personality trait, it is how we were born. This show sounds to me like the perfect example of forced, uninterested, bad representation that presents the community as a bunch of clowns. It is a poor excuse of a sheet used to cover up their poor animation, bad writing, and harmful behavior. I am so sick of shows like this making me, and my community look like fools. It's honestly disgusting.

The whole show is basically just RWBY but there’s even less plot progression. The sound mixing is also the worst I’ve seen in a modern main stream cartoon. The actors don’t seem to feel too comfortable in their roles so they seem mumbly. I’m not really looking forward to a second season, but if it gets an abridged series I’ll be there first day. Eyyy, finally a review of this show by someone who probably wouldn't call me a slur when they see pronouns in my Twitter bio! People have been focusing so much on the "cringe SJW tumblr CalArts beanface" circlejerk with this show, so seeing a review that just straight up explains _why_ the show is bad aside from the weird diversity advertising thing that pissed off weebs a couple years ago is greatly appreciated. It's a shame this show sucks, I actually quite liked the artstyle at first glance. (It definitely looked nicer in screenshots, at least.) Imo it looks like the main problem with this show story-wise is that it has no idea what it wants to be. It claims to be "adult," but every clip I've seen of it looks like it belongs on Cartoon Network. I've yet to see anything about it that would warrant it being considered an adult show? Not that shows have to be dark and gritty to be adult shows, but it's okay to make a family friendly show that's still meant to be taken seriously too. In general the show gives off "I played D&D once with my friends and I thought our campaign was just so interesting I should make a show about it, but actually it really wasn't that interesting I just thought it was interesting because I have no frame of reference" vibes. Not offensively terrible, but definitely below average.

High Guardian Spice is another case study to throw on the ever-expanding pile that really showcases the problem with a lot of contemporary media. Everyone is in such a big rush to say something with their work that they totally ignore what they're saying and how they say it. Themes and messaging should never be placed above story, characters, and conflict because, ultimately, all that produces is propaganda which is antithetical to good writing. Works like High Guardian Spice don't start with a question, they start with a statement, or series of statements, their creators wish to push. Instead of using the plot and characters of the piece to explore a question, they are scarficed to reinforce the desired statement(s) - regardless of the logical errors and inconsistencies doing so spawns. What makes something like High Guardian Spice all the more offensive is that couldn't even bother to have decent production values (art, animation, voice acting, etc) to at least attempt to derive some value out of being simple eye-candy - if nothing else. Some people might consider this overly hostile, but consider things in terms of the costs of opportunities not taken. Every self-congratulatory, moralizing, soapbox piece that gets greenlit and funded means time and resources not going towards greenlighting and funding a genuine piece that is more focused on telling a compelling story than posturing for ideological peers.

Rob Mckee said in his book Story: "When talented people write badly it’s generally for one of two reasons: Either they’re blinded by an idea they feel compelled to prove or they’re driven by an emotion they must express. When talented people write well, it is generally for this reason: They’re moved by a desire to touch the audience." It took me a while to fully understand the quote, but what it means to me is that you have to start with the fundamentals of good storytelling and build something compelling before you make it meaningful, not be "blinded" per say by the passion to share an opinion before you've written something that anyone could enjoy. You're writing a story, not giving a ted talk. Its still important, god knows I have plenty of politics to scream my head off about, but you have to be mindful of it the same way a cook needs to be mindful of how to prepare a dish. Instead of starting with "I want a pizza" and picking all your favorite foods and making them into a pizza shape and putting them in the oven, you do research to understand what makes a pizza the way it is and how you can do that in your kitchen. You practice making your own pizza and learn where the pitfalls are and gain experience and learn from others. Once you've mastered making any ordinary pizza that actually tastes good, you can start to experiment. Add controversial or unappreciated toppings and try to make people understand that they can taste good, by making a pizza with them that tastes good. This metaphor got away from me but whatever

This show is aggressively mediocre, and honestly I could forgive all the technical problems and inconsistencies if this show could get me to like -- just LIKE - ANY character un-ironically (besides the cat). The only character I like is Slime Boy and that's because his voice acting and audio is awful, so it's hilarious when he's on screen and barely whispering yet characters can understand him perfectly. It also feels like... how should I say this... like the character designs are trying to be as inoffensively unattractive as possible. They're not UGLY, but if you just take the demon teacher and you'll know what I mean. Her outfit, species and occupation looks like It was prime material for a Ms. Fanservice kind of character, and indeed that's a kind of thing you'd expect to happen. But the actual way it's executed is just... off somehow? I can't explain it but her proportions are so weird to me, stocky, overly narrow but round in the wrong places. In some frames she doesn't even have a stomach, her hips are connected to her chest. If they were going to go for that design, but didn't want her to be a fanservicy character, they shouldn't have done it at all. Change her outfit so it doesn't look like it COULD be sexy if done by a more talented artist. The main character, Rosemary, I'll give her this she's got the same amount of development that Ruby Rose had in the first five volumes of RWBY, which is none. Her personality is so stereotypical but I'd forgive that in most shows, because that kind of attitude works with the audience. We are meant to be as excited as her to learn about this world and what's in it. Which is why it doesn't work when this world is so cliche and uninteresting, without compromise. Also this is admittedly a nitpick, but my absolute least favourite designs belong to the mermaids, whose appearances wouldn't be out of place in a children's book. Seriously, on a site that is dedicated to ANIME, they really should've understood the standards monster girls are held to in the anime community.

As a trans person, a writer, somebody who saw the development of this series in twitter, and wanted it too see it because a person who admires -Julia Kaye, - gave voice to one of these characters... The moment the professor said that he's transgender out loud hurted me as hell. As it gives the impression they only cared about representation and not actual character writing. And while, yes, representation is a good thing (in fact, I argue we need more lgbt representation in media,) It's far better when you have a well constructed, 3 dimensional character with actual Depth of that makes it even more relatable, and even can even help the people who need it if done right! But it appears i'm asking quite a lot these days.

The way I see it, it’s not the politics that affect anything, there’s a reason shows like The Owl House are good, and this isn’t, you cant rely on the bare minimum of inclusivity to sell your story, you have to actually HAVE a story, you need to make the audience engaged in what’s going on and what’s happening with the characters, that’s why I forgive the animation mistakes in steven universe, the characters are actual layered, flawed, interesting, characters, and the story is entertaining and pretty when it wants to be. It’s honestly pretty insulting (not Q-force levels insulting of course) to rely on politics to sell a blatantly uninteresting, boring, worthless show

Just wanna say that I’m really grateful for your review-ish of the show overall, because it did give me a lot of info about it without a) just telling us the plot and b) completely roasting it like how it’s faring over on Twitter. I’m also really happy you touched upon the animation quality overall because visuals is something really important to me when I watch any show, since it’s the first thing to draw me in before the plot kicks in.

5:40 Thyme... girl you put the brace on the wrong arm! I remember watching Batman the Animate Series where they were interviewing the voice director. She kept saying how it was important that they found "voices with character". These were voices that matched the archetypes of each individual character in the series. The dark brooding voice of Batman, the salutary, sexy voice of Catwoman, the down to earth, dry voice of Alfred.

I remember Raye's, the creator of High Guardian Spice, cartoon with Rosemary back in 2014, it was a fun little animation called "Treasure Hunt". When I found out that small animator was turning that small cartoon into a full animated series I was actually excited. Despite all the hate, I cast that aside because I liked Raye's original cartoon as well as their characters. I am kinda disappointed with the show. It was very underwhelming and had choppy animation a lot of the time. I really really think it would work well as a comic instead. Raye has a tumblr blog with their characters in the show's art style but it's actually better and cuter. I really want Raye to be happy but I also think the show was kind of a mess. I'd recommend Raye just make it a comic if they can get the rights back or work something out. They are Raye's characters after all

As a trans person sadly I'm not surprised at badly written rep anymore, I just want to watch a show with good rep that resonates with Me, like voice acted/acted by trans actors, diverse, have depth, can't be earased by the fandom(Like Grell from black butler), their trauma isn't exaggerated or made to feed cis hero complexes (Danish girl and the Danish girl is based off a real trans women which makes things sm worse seeing as how they ignored the history of who they were making a movie about, sorry for the rant it just makes me mad) etc, I think the best example of a well written trans character is rayne (not sure how to spell their name) from the owl house, their only in one episode but the entire fandom loves them and the owl house is in a world with no homophobia or transphobia which also helps people feel safe in teh world their emerging into. Sorry for the rant, and thanks if u read it sfjfhkwkhfwihf

I like that someone admits it has potential, because thats what I see too. I feel horrible for the creator, because I know he really did care about this project. But it was doomed from the start when we saw where the team behind it's priorities were. Representation is great, and important. But sheesh. Not only did the show put WAY too much focus and emphesis on it to a degree that actually takes away from it, but the representation it did have was borderline disrespectful at times??? Especially to trans people, which is *shocking* considering the guy behind this show is a trans man himself. It really kinda feels like after the backlash, crunchyroll just basically dropped any idea of taking this show seriously. Like, what the hell is that audio mixing? The voice acting??? Christ. It's just such a shame..

Watching old anime from my folks, I was always shocked by the innovation, the depth, the layers, or the joy, the wild slapstick, the incredible comedy etc. Ghost in the Shell, Akira, Pat Labor, VOTOMS, Cromartie, Trigun, Planetes etc. In the last decade or so, I shifted over to comedies that were incredibly clever, things that left me breathless from so much laughter, like Daily Lives of High School Boys, Sakamoto, Grand Blue, Nichijou, etc. I'll be the first to admit that you have to dig through mediocrity to find things that inspire you, but Anime is incredible. So why, just why, are people who get inspired by anime, walking away with such generic concepts. You know I was actually really excited when I heard one of the creators worked on Animaniacs, and I'm no elitist, I love a lot of cartoons like Adventure Time, Regular Show, Teen Titans, Batman TAS, etc. I'm just really confused when people who are inspired by anime churn out things that have to be liked ironically. I don't want to like something ironically or memetically or whatever the fuck. I just want it to be good. Instead of being the American who achieved the dream of making their own anime or whatever, just make something good. It's not embarrassing to be called a cartoon, it's just embarrassing to be bad. Well, Riot Software of all people apparently just wants to tell good stories with animation this November, so I'm covered I guess.

I wrote a gacha series when I was 10/11 about witches, and it had a non-binary character called Griffon. Griffon was a reaper I believe, and they were pretty shy and dismissive. They didn't think of the main characters as friends, but rather opportunities to learn more. And then being non-binary was barely a topic in the series- if a 10 year old gacha kid who fetishized gay men and used the word baka unironically could write a pretty decent character who happened to be trans, and not just "the trans one UwU", then so can fully grown adults, in my opinion at least.

I saw many Witch Schooling, Warriors Traveling, hell, even The Owl House has EVERY good thing you just said and made it zentillons times better than this Rubbish Show. I can't rescue anything about. Not a single character interested me. Every moment was boring asf. The animation was times poor and annoying and even when you explained the show, I had seen more animations mistakes that made Problem Solverz like not big deal. And everything about the narrative and cinematographic moments are awful. I jus give it 2 out of 100. And God, please don't make another season, please.

The backgrounds have… some interesting choices behind them. Like the decision to use lineless art with characters that have black outlines around them. If they were going for line-less, semi-realism look, They should have gone for characters closer to the Klaus look. Which is really expensive and difficult So instead what they should have done is kept the backgrounds more in style with the characters which have a three tone palette “highlight -base colour -shadow” instead of smudging all the tones into oblivion. It looks really inconsistent because they are shots where you can see the paint strokes that haven’t been smudged with these sharp edges, and then other parts of the image where it’s all blurred and muddy. Shot 2:43 is so much nicer with its simplistic cartooned style, rather than shot 3:56 in comparison. The characters look like they belong there and It would have also been waaay cheaper as well. My guess is that the director didn’t know what they wanted for the visual style which lead to a lot of confusion of the art style consistency across the characters and backgrounds. Then they probably ran out of time and had to make a quick decision.

So what I got from this as a TL;DR is: Good points: One reasonably motivated character, one funny cat(I think that was the point) and the show had a interesting plot POINT(not plural but singular) Bad: Animation, voicing, and character Overall: Decent story idea at best with interesting ideas. Okay, TL;DR over and on another, the story itself seems like it had potential, but was poorly executed in presentation the way that pushed the audiences wrong buttons with people expecting it to turn out bad(and shocked, it did turn out not that good)

Honestly this show had/has a lot of controversy behind it and it makes sense because they marketed as "anime" and the staff working behind it is "diverse" but showed mostly women, which was originally said when High guardian spice was first announced. My main problem/issue about that is, it doesn't matter who's helping the development its should be how. Cartoons such as Avatar the last air bender and teen titans are far more amazing shows and still is even today and those where marketed as anime but were "anime inspired". so the people who where working on high guardian spice should have looked at what succeeded and why, instead of trying to justify what they are making is great and amazing when its not. but thats just my hot take.
