Flying the ILS Localizer approach at Essendon Airport. Watch as Essendon Tower cycle the high intensity runway lighting (HIRL) through its range from stages 3 to 6. Stage 6 is extremely bright, hard to look at for too long at night unless you're in really murky IMC conditions.
Thanks as always to my Instructor Steve for allowing me to film this and for his continued guidance for my Instrument Rating.
VERY IMPORTANT: I am a private pilot and am NOT qualified to give flying instruction. This video, like all videos on this channel, has been significantly edited from the original source footage and is provided for entertainment purposes only. Many radio calls and procedures have been omitted. If you have any questions about anything you see or hear, please speak to a Certified Flying Instructor first.
Filmed on a GoPro Hero4 Session and GoPro Hero4 Silver.

Great video showing the stages of lights. Did my very first actual at night flight last night. Asked them for stage 5 before I got out of the clouds. Definitely helps with getting visual contact in the soup. Watch out though, had to have them turned down by short final as it was REALLY bright (they have an ALSF-2 approach light setup).

Thanks, really glad you enjoyed that. Congratulations on your first night flight, and that's a good tip for everyone that you can ask the tower to 'downstage' the lighting to reduce the brightness on final to protect your night vision. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍

I literally just checked the DAPS to see the missed approach procedure in Essendon as I was watching the video. Great video ! :))

Hi Stefan, Nice videos again.. thanks. By the way I am going to study the IREX book(Bob Tait) to prepare for a theory exam. Any suggestion on what type of materials are good to follow in terms of study? I have heard Jeppesen is not as common as AIP in Australia for IREX exam.

Hey Jaf, thanks for the feedback. I used Bob Tait's study materials for the IREX but also backed that up with a few practise exams from our local pilot shop. I bought the Bob Tait cyber exams as well and really benefitted from those. The wording of the questions were very similar in the exam so it felt familiar. If you can do some ground sessions with your IR Instructor as well that would help too. And I used all the Airservices documentation rather than Jepps, that's just personal preference though. I'm sure others have done just as well using the Jepps documents. I'd suggest use the one that you feel most comfortable with. Good luck with your exams, work hard, study lots, and you'll be fine. Cheers, Stef 👍

It's a flight school planes so I may not always be in that aircraft. But if I see you I'll say hi! Also how do you record audio?

Sounds good. And I record audio using a standard audio cable from one of the spare headphone jacks into one of my GoPros using the GoPro 3.5mm audio adaptor, then sync it up in post-production afterwards.
