do you have any tips on how to raise your hips or any drills that can help with hip height/flexibility
@OutperformOfficial5 жыл бұрын
Hi Eric. Hurdle drills are one of the most effective ways to target and develop hip strength and flexibility. Check out this video to get you started. Even though it is geared towards throwers it works really well for jumpers as well. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jX3IeWR8n9V5iZI Here is another video that has actually really helped me with hip strength and flexibility. It's not track specific but they really work well prior to practice kzbin.info/www/bejne/gHbPdqOki61ma7M

Hi Coach Baily. Purchased the Vimeo series and found it really useful for my jumpers. I've got a girl hitting 5-2 indoors and we are working on getting her to the next level. One issue she has is curling her takeoff leg under the bar as she rotates over it. Her heel often kicks the bar as she goes over. Any advice? Is she too close to the bar at takeoff maybe?
@calvin31775 жыл бұрын
I'm a sophomore in high school and have recently cleared 6'4 during indoor track season, however, I hurt my knee during the state meet and was only able to jump 6'. I just started up outdoor track after resting and doing physical therapy for over a month and my knee is all better. but do you have any suggestions for getting back into things after an injury? i was really hoping to jump 6'5 this season
@OutperformOfficial5 жыл бұрын
Those are some great heights for your age Calvin. Recovering from injuries can be challenging but I know from personal experience that it's just something that comes with the sport. The first thing is to progress slowly! I've seen too many athletes push too hard too early after an injury and either reinjure the same area or make it worse. Your muscles, joints and nervous system need time to re-adapt to the forces experienced during jumping and practice. Really get in-tune with your body and listen to what it's telling you. A minor pain can quickly turn into something major. Another mistake a lot of jumpers make is slacking on the rehab once they feel they are back to normal. This is a big mistake. Continue to work on rehab exercises and strengthening the knee as well as post-practice rehab (ice bath, ice massage etc.) Lastly, don't put too much pressure on yourself to hit certain heights. Understand that coming back from an injury is all part of the journey and with smart, effective training the results will follow. Good luck Calvin!

So I'm having trouble arching my back. Every time I jump I always seem to go straight over, not bending my back. I try to arch my back, but I feel like I almost can't. Any tips or ways to fix it?
@OutperformOfficial2 жыл бұрын
Yes, start performing back-overs after your warm up and prior to jumping. You have to get comfortable with this movement and this drill will really help you kzbin.info/www/bejne/gYXHm4KFn8dqhMk

I have a question, I am currently a junior in high school with a height of 5' 11" and last year I cleared 5' 8" (I know we don't use metric) but the thing though is that I "chaired" the jump with absolutely no form. This year I've only cleared 5' 6" but have really been trying to nail down the form instead of just jumping without any thought as to how to position my body. Do you think that once I can fix my form this year next year I'll be able to clear 6'? Thank you for reading this if you got to this point.
@OutperformOfficial5 жыл бұрын
Hi Sovenate, the short answer is yes. The High Jump is about speed and power but without good technique clearing, high bars is almost impossible. Based on the information you provided I definitely think you could go well over 6' with proper technique. The fact that you realized you need to develop your form instead of just jumping is the first step. Keep at it, work hard and the heights will get there.

"...for some athletes." Yes. Not everyone should be doing it. I used to throw my head back and lose sensory awareness. Just before I retired due to bung knees, I found a way that suited me better and it was almost the complete antithesis of that practice. First, I stopped throwing my lead arm. In fact, I was changing to a single arm swing and the jump almost became an exaggerated running stride. That gave me better speed and foot plant on takeoff and believe it or not, better rotation around the bar. I wasn't feeling the need to arch as much because my rotation was so much better and I wasn't losing awareness at the peak of the jump either. This new method (for me) didn't have any bearing on my knee problems, as far as I know.
