*update 9/17/2021: discovered a concerning issue with the Z3's. The plastic used in the engine bay especially around the radiator can become brittle and crack. This can cause an issue that will lead to coolant leaks, and may lead to requiring a new radiator if plastic becomes brittle around the unit.

Replace every bit of the cooling system. It's not that expensive to do.

@@CarGuy1 yeah it cost me 1k$ to replace it all with rock auto parts, I got the performance water pump tho. that radiator costs big money, using that new Mercedes coolant now too

Even with a all aluminum radiator will leak. I stuck with the oem one which I knw can get another 60-80k. Easy swap. Definitely get a metal impeller water pump. And change thermostat. The coolant expansion tank is also prone to crack at some point. Also real easy.

Excellent video Z3 model ....is a classic car,it's unique that why it was driven by James Bond, in the Movie. Question ❓ if I purchase one 1997 2.8 engine...Manuel .... with 150,000miles .... what are some of the things I need to replace and what are some "cool" things to add to this car . My dream car that match my personality. Power and speed.,charm

Thank you! so absolutely check the water pump isn't leaking or any coolant leaks from the hoses. Also usually the 02 sensor tends to fail on these. Overall if you open the oil cap and notice its dirty on the inside or the oil is dirty when checked stay away. Finally be cautious since the plastic parts in the engine bay can become brittle especially around the radiator. Hope that helps!

I have owned my 2000 2.8 Z3 convertible baby 22 years now. Yes, she is a cry-baby. But this car has been so much fun making a dreaded trip to do whatever chore a delight. 2022 she is in her 23rd of existence,, built in July 1999. Take care of your precious baby and it WILL take care of you.

What exactly is the engine inside this particular model and is the Miata engine comparable?

This model has the 2.5L M54 straight 6 engine which produces 170hp and the miata of the same year is a 1.8L 4-cyclinder engine producing 140hp. The Z3 has a punchier and quicker to accelerate engine, but the Z3 has a better transmission IMO. The Z3 can be a little nose heavy but then again they have quicker models. They also made a 4 cyclinder Z3 that also made 140hp.
