I thought this was my favorite western. It made me seek out more films starring Gary Cooper and I stumbled upon The Westerner. Absolutely amazing.

I heard a commentary once and it said that during the fight in the barn, Lloyd Bridges' son Beau was visiting the set and watched the fight from up in the hay loft.

The fact that you love old classics shows that you have great taste ! Love when you watch old classics. A really great western to watch is The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence (1962) with John Wayne. I think you’ll really like it.

John Wayne’s criticism of this movie has been blown out of proportion over the years. What he said was he didn’t like how Cooper’s character relied so much on the help of the townspeople. Rio Bravo was actually a response to this movie. In it, Wayne’s sheriff refuses help several times because he doesn’t want to get people involved that aren’t experienced.

So many good co - star acters back then. not to mention Cooper and Kelly were incredible as always

There are a lot of good ol westerns. One underrated one I love is The Gunfighter, 1950, starring Gregory Peck.

Hans Gruber: This time John Wayne does not walk off into the sunset with Grace Kelly. John McClane: That was Gary Cooper, a**hole. You want quick endings? Shaw Brothers. Shaw Brothers.

Glad you undertook to do this yourself. If you wait for Patreon polls, the 95% of history's greatest movies made before 1970 will never be chosen. You'll just get MCU and "Star Wars" over and over. Good reaction.

This was made during the Red Scare and blacklisting era of Hollywood when actors were being called before Congress to testify against one another and name names. The townspeople are meant to represent those that turned their back on their friends that were persecuted.
@AT-rr2xw Жыл бұрын
Apparently, Cooper himself was very conservative and disapproved of what he saw as left leaning sentiments in some sectors of Hollywood, but he had also befriended some people who had been targeted by the HUAC and refused to name names, unlike a few others in Hollywood who shared his politics.

And the screenwriter, Carl Foreman, was put on the blacklist while the film was being made, and could not work for several years after that. Ironically, some on the other side of the political spectrum (though clearly not John Wayne) saw the film as an allegory for courage to resist pressure from friends NOT to denounce communists, so the movie was generally popular among people on both sides. For whatever reason, this was reportedly President Eisenhower's favorite movie. Still one of the greatest (though least typical) Westerns ever made.

"You're a good-looking boy: You've big, broad shoulders. But he's a man. And it takes more than big, broad shoulders to make a man." Fun Fact: Gary Cooper took a cut in salary to help this get made, taking $50K plus a share in the profits instead of his customary $250K. No Make-Up Fact: Little-to-no make-up was used on Gary Cooper's face. The thinking was that the lines on his face would emphasize how worried his character was. Law Enforcement Fact: One of the reasons Gary Cooper took the part was because it represented what his father, a Montana state Supreme Court justice, had taught him: That law enforcement was everybody's job. Come Back Kid Fact: In 1951, after 25 years in show business, Gary Cooper's professional reputation was in decline, and he was dropped from the "Motion Picture Herald's" list of the top-ten box-office performers. In the following year, he made a big comeback, at the age of 51, with this film. And Scene Fact: Fred Zinnemann said that the black smoke billowing from the train is a sign that the brakes were failing. He and the cameraman didn't know it at the time, and barely got out of the way. The camera tripod snagged itself on the track and fell over, smashing the camera, but the film survived, and is in the movie. Hot Take Fact: Director Fred Zinnemann's meticulous planning enabled him to make 400 shots in only four weeks. In the fight scene involving Marshal Will Kane (Gary Cooper) and Deputy Marshal Harvey Pell (Lloyd Bridges), Lloyd's son, Beau Bridges, then a youngster, was in the hayloft watching the filming. When water was thrown on his father after the fight, Beau could not help laughing, requiring the scene to be shot a second time. Cooper was unwell and in pain, but was gracious and understanding, according to Lloyd.

My favorite Westerns of the time were the half dozen James Stewart/Anthony Mann western series of the 50s. Stewart could & did it all, one of the very top notch Western actors of all time, not often thought of as such because he excelled in so many other genres as well, whereas Wayne was a one note character. If you haven’t yet, check them out. Oh, and his very early career off the beaten path western comedy Destry Rides Again with Marlena Dietrich. & best of all, in my estimation, John Ford’s iconic The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence with Stewart, Wayne, & Lee Marvin for good measure.👌

Westerns of that period were not about the shootouts and violence, though both were part of the story, they were about people. They could afford to spend time building up the suspense. Try "Stagecoach" (1939).

I fell in love with the song the movie was based on long before I ever saw the film. My dad had an LP of tv western theme songs also & this fit right in. I think the movie stood up to the story in the song pretty well plus anytime I get to see Grace Kelly on screen I’m happy! 😄 I was a casual fan of John Wayne until I read an interview w/him where he spouted all kinds of racist nonsense. I had no idea he was that kind of idiot. I haven’t watched anything he was in since then & don’t plan to.

The notoriously short Alan Ladd in Shane (& most any other scene with any other actress), for example. Another would be Bogey when standing next to the taller Bacall , Hepburn, & Bergman.

Please do some background reasearch on this film. It has deeper political ramifications from the period it was made, 1950s, that will increase your appreciation of the film.
