That’s the Great “Ben Johnson”. Who called Shane “Sodie pop” in one of the greatest westerns ever made, “Shane”. Ben is a real life cowboy turned actor. One of the best real cowboys Hollywood has ever hired

My parents took me to see this in a drive-in movie and it made a real impression on me. Still hurts when I hear Jodie call "Come back Shane! Shane!" into the darkness. We later studied the book "Shane" by Jack Schaeffer when I was in junior high and it is a great read. The movie captured its nuances and the relational triangle between Joe Starett and his wife and Shane perfectly. Such a sad film but one of strong men bonding as seen through the eyes of the boy. Wonderful that you covered this classic! Thanks.

Did you noticed the dog, laying in front of the bar? He gets up, and slowly walks out, when it's about to hit the fan. He does it twice in the movie. The symbolism in the movie is great. Shane, with the tiny hat, and the HUGE gun he carries.

Back in the old west farmers used barbed wire to protect their crops. Ranchers thought it was their god-given right to let their cattle roam anywhere. There was very little law back then. A truce and negotiations just would not work, if it happened at all.

Classic. Maybe the best western made. Eastwood made a kind of remake with High Plains Drifter.

In the Old West, the U.S. government encouraged going West and 'claiming' land. The intent was good, but it was still untamed and lawless since there was very little structure. Didn't take long for those that had enough money and muscle to take their 'claims', eventually Marshall's and court systems brought order but settling was rough business in the 1800's.

My prized cowboy thing is my Glenn Ford, screen worn shirt. The tailer's tag has MGM - GLENN FORD on it. It's just a plain grey shirt, but I like it. Alan Ladd was the type of cowboy I grew up on. Like Audie Murphy; Randolph Scott; Clint Eastwood; Alan Ladd and of course John Wayne. Please keep your western's coming!! Have you seen "Unforgiven" with Eastwood??

Thanks for posting your reaction! One of the best westerns of all time. Filmed by terrific director, George Stevens, with two of best actors - Ben Johnson and Jack Palance - a true American Classic film, frequently listed among top 10 westerns of all time.

Very good job! You have a laid back delivery, which is a welcome change. So many of the first time watchers are so loud!

Ladd's son was Alan Ladd jr who founded the Ladd Company. He just died a few months ago. Look up his achievements. They're incredible!

My family homesteaded in Iowa in the 1860s and 1870s. Farm is still on the family today. I love this movie. It's a metaphor for returning WWII veterans.
