Love these things, the adhesive glue that melts during shrinking is stronger than the actual crimp itself. Very strong connection, don't have to worry about it seperating even if you get a bad crimp.

Crimp dies for insulated terminals are different than dies you should use for heat shrink terminals.

The crimping worked fine, But Not Perfect. You can see it actually did damage the heatshrink, there was a shiny metal part showing through @3:33 where a tiny pinhole opened up larger, after the heat had softened and shrunk it. I wonder if this is avoidable or not, the plastic covering was very thin for the amount of force needed. Maybe you need a better brand of terminal; you didnt show what brand. You get what you pay for in terms of bulk consumables, doesnt surprise me. But the crimper was very nice.

I went back and inspected that ring terminal and it's hard to tell if the glue filled in a hole if there was one or if the heat shrink just formed back into place but there is no metal connection possible where the heat shrink is supposed to be.

Thanks for this! I've been looking for a crimper that was both good and affordable. I have the obligatory cheap ones like you showed, and I have access to professional ones at work that are ~$1200/set. 😱 These aren't cheap, but should work well for a long time, and I like that. 👍

If you look closely, the crimper punctured the insulation, leaving a bright silver spot. I much prefer to use the uninsulated connectors with separate heat shrink. The crimps are strong and less bulky.

Yes it did. I caught that right off the bat. I don't use the heat shrink connectors. I prefer non insulated connectors in conjunction with real heat shrink.

Once you heat shrink it, that closes up. Having used both, I prefer these heat shrink types because they glue to the part of cable that isn’t even crimped.

@@tomkilmore7254 a dedicated adhesive lined heat shrink over a non insulated connector is much higher quality.

That's because he was using the wrong die. He was using a die for insulated terminals, not heat shrink terminals.

@@brianthompson9485Looks like he used the correct die to me. Kind of a bummer because I'd hoped that the wrong die was the cause of the puncture. Not sure if KZbin comments allow hyperlinks, but if you search Amazon for "Wirefy Crimping Tool Set 5 PCS" you can see the picture of the A5 die that matches what was used in the video. m.media-amazon.com/images/I/81HVb46bDaL._AC_SL1500_.jpg

Looks like a nice tool. And those self-shrink+glue connectors are the bee's knees. Twisting the end of the wire makes for a worse crimp. Return it to the manufactured twist if the stripper untwists it but don't go beyond that. Twisting beyond that makes conductor strands cross over each other, and leaves pockets and spaces inside the crimp, reducing the conductivity, corrosion resistance, and strength of the crimp. The more parallel the strands, the better the crimp. I would have given an 1/8 turn if anything, but not a full turn. Also the blue terminal is usually the appropriate color terminal for 16Ga. (Red is 18-22) (blue 14-16), (yellow 10-12), which would explain we he needed to excessively twist it.

Because the pre-attached heat shrink tubing is so easy to damage, I'm going to switch to bare ring terminals with no tubing or insulation. After crimping, I'll add the heat shrink. I've simply had too much insulation goobered up on ring terminals due to crimping. Yes, it will take me longer. But that time affords me the opportunity for a very clear inspection of the crimp and a perfect heat shrink. I'm using a crimp die very similar to the one you used, but a different brand. I hope the new company is doing well!

Thanks for the good wishes!! What brand heat shrink terminals did you have issues with? We are considering carrying them in our webstore but are not yet certain on which vendor we want to go with. Have you ever found a quality connector that you were satisfied with?
@WorBlux

It's a danger, but wider crimp tools help, and most minor damage the glue will fill in. I''ve tried bare terminals, but couldn't find any of reasonable quality. The ones I found were just too thin to really be trusted with high loads or critical connections. Also for extremely visible connection I want to be pretty, a double layer of heat shrink doesn't hurt anything.

These crimpers are Fucking amazing, their uninsulated jaws crimp Anderson Powerpoles VERY well, and the ferrules they produce are fucking amazing.
