The little gold nugget of info in this for me was where you talk about the importance of colour uniformity in the bases. Which will allow us to get away with significant colour variation in the minis and still appear unified. Mind Blown!

Today I tried out the Molotow one4all black primer for the first time. It's been the revelation I was waiting for. Really, I can't describe how thin is this primer, it's crazy. No clogging, no continuos cleening the airbrush, two layers at maximum since it's incredibly covering. @Marco, thank you for all your content, but above everything I thank you for letting me discover this amazing primer. Now I can start painting again from a year-long hiatus. @guys, every once in a while, is the tool that makes all the difference.

Awesome video as always. If I could wish for one thing for you to do on the channel, I’d have it be your take on painting a 40K ork army. I just started mine, and it’s a daunting task - the amount of minis I have to pint feels a bit overwhelming, but they’re such an amazing range I can’t help myself. I’ve adapted a lot of your techniques with regards to the airbrush and oils, but I’d love to see how you’d tackla it. Maybe it’s something you could give your take on how you’d go about once the new ork codex lands? Keep up the amazing work Marco!

Great video as always! I am gonna try this colored primer->zenithal->oil wash approach. Looks amazing :) I have had some problems with oil washes though. I have been pulling away paint, even though I didn't have any white spirits on the Q-tip. Do you have any experience of using oil washes on metal figures, that is mainly where I have been experiencing the problems. I use Molotov black as primer. Zenithal with inks (liquitex) Paint with acrylics (fantasy games/scalecolour) Last time I even put a layer of matt varnish before I put on the oil wash, but I still pulled away paint. :/ Does anyone have any ideas what I might do wrong? What kind of white spirits do you use for dilution? Is it possible to use hardware store quality or do you need to go for the artshop level?

@uglyduckling81
@uglyduckling81 3 жыл бұрын
It's definitely faster to base coat even for the average man. What he is dong though is not realistic for an average painter. Takes me an hour or 2 to base coat 5 space marines with a few layers of highlights using the airbrush. You always have to fight a clogged nozzle, or you a moving the airbrush around too much and a bunch of paint in the pot slops onto your leg, table and carpet which you need to stop and clean up immediately. Or you have the paint too diluted and the pressure too high and it spider webs on the model and you need to spend ages redoing previous colours to try and undo the mistake. Airbrushing is a whole new skill that needs to be learnt.
@jayward8943
@jayward8943 3 жыл бұрын
I'm gunna disagree with everyone who says it's not realistic tor us to do what Marco does. It's totally achievable, but takes a lot of practice. Airbrushes aren't magic. They're a tool and it takes just as long to master using an airbrush as it does a regular paint brush.

I don't varnish because white spirit doesn't interact chemically with the previous layers of water based paints. Different types of varnish can create interesting effects modifying the adhesion of oils but it's not a mandatory step. In this case in particular I really want the oil to soak into the acrylic layer leaving a stronger mark! Check my oil painting playlist for more details 😊

@@MarcoFrisoniNJM Nice, thanks! i was wondering how oil paints react with acrylics directly and i was afraid off rubbing off my previous paint job if i didn't have a protective layer of varnish inbetween. But i really liked the effect you achieved here, so i am trying to do the same application. Thanks for the response ❤️

You have to be delicate because you introduce into the system a lot of physical stress but in general modern acrylics are pretty tough and with some practice it's easy to find the right pressure to use

@@MarcoFrisoniNJM yeah, i think i will work pretty quickly and not let the oil paint dry too much, so i don't need that much force to whip it away with white spirit. Or maybe try a satin varnish beforehand? For less capillary effect and more surface tension?

@@Matti_Mattsen yep and remember that even if they look dry in a few minutes they are still extremely playable, so no real strength is needed. It depends on the look you want: no/Matt varnish=more adhesion and grittiness, gloss varnish=precise clean lines with little impact on the open areas

Strange question. Do any of you also just put on his videos while you paint wihtout watching, but just to hear him talk?

Hey Marco! You're my favorite painting channel and I'd love to learn from you directly. Do you still offer coaching? Would it be possible to email you and discuss this ? - Nathan

just out of curiosity has anyone attempted any of marcos tutorials? it looks so easy but I know Marco is a master painter just wondering how they turn out in the hands of an average painter?

Yeah! I have just started using these techniques for my board game minis. (inspired by Marco and Jon from Ninjon). I don't get as high quality results yet (I'm still figuring out proper oil consistency and dry times and my color choices are worse and my light placement is worse.) But I'm getting the same or better level of results that I used to get in less than half the time...I've been doing a rattle can zenithal, touch up with white, transparent acrylics (like diluted inks or contrast paints or pro acryl transparent paint) to add color while keeping the value sketch, doing an oil step, and adding spot highlights. I've been super happy with the results! I would recommend watching Ninjon's video on painting board game minis for a simpler starting point (no airbrush and only four oil paints needed with his tutorial.), but I keep coming to Marco for ideas to take it to the next level. My conclusion is that the next level needs an airbrush...

This is an example of something I just did with Nemesis (board game). Maybe my fifth model with this style and it took about an hour, maybe 45 minutes not counting dry times:photos.app.goo.gl/LHiBUZAFNtR63Pnm9

@@johnathanrhoades7751 those look amazing. I do think this style works best with organic materials/surfaces, the complexity of colours really works there

Winsor&Newton Series7 for acrylics and cheap synthetic brushes for oils (or old W&N, no more good for acrylics but still good to blend oils!)
