I'd love to see a discussion on the mechanics of painting NMM. One of the struggles I've had with them is understanding the color relationships that NMM demands, since colors like silver reflect a lot of the light from the environment, thus the highlights and shadows reflect the sky and ground, but integrating that idea onto the model is a challenge. Especially on colored metals like gold, which cause the shadow and highlights to change color due to the hue of the surface.

I recently bought Carnevale on a semi-whim to play more small-scale games and once i'm done with my current project i'm definitely going to try them using oils as that seems appropriate, after some test models of course. I suppose one advantage of oils on resin models is that in the worst case scenario you just go with the mineral spirits to strip them off rather than risk melting them with dettol/simple green/whatever.

What’s the best way to handle eyes with the oil painting process? I have trouble getting the black to go over the white in a clean and detailed way. Do I just need to really wait a while for the white to set? Also I would love a video about choosing colors for models that have a lot of browns. I have trouble choosing colors when a mini has mostly leather armor and pouches, for example. It either looks garish because the colors clash or muddy and boring because they’re too similar. Thanks for your videos! I just finished doing a unit of 20 goblins using the oils and acrylics method and it’s fantastic. I’ve never had more fun or gotten more interesting results with the ease of the blending!

I was taught to press for air, pull back for paint, and then go forward again before releasing the trigger. But you seem to do the entire cycle with one press. How do you do that and avoid paint seeping in between?

Hi Marco! Very insightful video! A question though when you are applying the cerulean blue as you apply it it is smooth as an acrylic and it seems you did not dilute your paint at all. If I attempt to apply oils they feel like I'm slathering butter on the surface and can't achieve a smooth layer. Either super thick and chunky or you can see the brushstroke. How do you deal with that? Any pointers?
@MarcoFrisoniNJM
@MarcoFrisoniNJM 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! Part of the problem is caused by the high density of oils that can be difficult to manage in our small surfaces. The good thing is that in that high density and heavy body there's a crazy amount of pigments (that in opaque paints in particular have an absurd covering power) so the main trick is to use small/microscopic quantities of paint in every application. But it's the blending brush that really defines the finish so don't stress too much about brush strokes and volumes of paint during the application because the blend is where they are fixed!
@K0Y41SH3RE
@K0Y41SH3RE 2 жыл бұрын
@@MarcoFrisoniNJM Thank you for your quick reply! I had a minor breakthrough in the last couple of days just playing with dilution and reducing the amount utilised and spreading it on the surface and realising that you have to apply all your gradients "at the same time" and blend them. Just as you elaborated the amounts are microscopic and bleding is sooo easy..

Can you safely use an acrylic matte varnish over this? (E.g. AK ultra matte or Vallejo mecha matte)

I was hoping for you to paint Infinity with oils. It's amazing to see how they work. Doing my own Infinity models with oils soon is a big goal of mine. I've been watching oil paint videos for a while now and I hope they will cure my frustration with acrylics. The different levels of transparecy worry me, though. I'm wondering if my plan of starting with some tubes of Abteilung colours won't work out for what I hope to achieve. I don't want to have to buy dozens of different colours, like I did with acrylics.

Start with few good quality tubes (b&w + primaries) and see how the medium works for you. Abteilung oils are amazing for weathering but not incredible for proper painting

With oils you have a _tonne_ of working time (talking a few days), as they don't dry like acrylics, so you can mix colours and work with them for longer. Oils _are_ expensive compared to acrylics, but you'll use a _lot less_ oil to cover a surface - a little goes a long way due to the heavy pigmentation. It is possible to mix most colours from a palette of just five - white, brown, blue, yellow and magenta. You can do this with acrylics too, but generally all those addictive bottles of paint that we feel compelled to acquire are just combinations of a select handful of pigments that save us from having to consistently re-mix the same formula. The majority of the Citadel paint range is made from just ten base pigments, mixed in different ratios. This is why they combine easily, as you're only really adjusting the ratios of a few pigments when you blend. I've been dipping my toes into oils for mini painting, inspired by Marco's work here, albeit with water-soluble oils (W&N Artisan range), which means no need for white spirit or other harsh/toxic chemicals. There are some caveats with this type of oil - I've found Artisan Thinner to be somewhat reactive to acrylics unlike white spirit, when washing / rubbing back - but I've been having an absolute blast using them. If the investment in, cleaning with and fumes from harsh solvents are of concern to you, water-soluble oils are an option to consider. Be aware that in any case certain pigments like titanium white, should not go down the drain as it's toxic to marine life (warnings will be marked on the tube). Also note it's not recommended to use fine natural-hair brushes with solvents, they'll be destroyed pretty quickly, synthetics work best. Natural brushes are fine with water-soluble oils as you can clean them with water and soap. Another thing with oils, keep your brush _dry_ when you go to add and move paint around, unlike with acrylics where a little water is desirable, and wipe it off frequently as the colours you brush over will be picked back up into the brush and can go places you don't want them. It's a lot of fun, don't be afraid and give it a go! Grab yourself some cheap test minis, and just try a whole heap of things on them. Put down zenithals, acrylic base colours, try oils directly, or thin them down into a wash, try using them to stain by rubbing them gently off after a time, so many different new techniques to learn, you'll have a blast.

Hey man, loving the videos, especially any to do with using oils - quick question, I can only get hold of normal white spirit, not low odour or artist grade right now - will that still be ok for painting my miniatures?
@MarcoFrisoniNJM
@MarcoFrisoniNJM 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks a million! I use cheap odourless white spirit from the hardware store; standard white spirit is more smelly and pungent but it's still the same chemical with the exact same properties! The artist grade is purer, more refined and a bit less oily, but again, same properties and behaviour 😉

Huh. Oil yellow really does cover well. Are there any downsides to just basecoating yellow with oils, even on an otherwise all-acrylic piece? Other than a slightly extended drying time, of course.

Hi Marco! Would you mind sharing what brushes you used for the blending, all brushes I tried tend to leave a lot of streaks rather than a smooth blend
@MarcoFrisoniNJM
@MarcoFrisoniNJM Жыл бұрын
Hi! I use cheap soft synthetic brushes and old W&N series7 that are no more good for acrylics, but still great for oil blends. You can add a bit of linseed oils and thinner to reduce the streaks that come mostly from the high density of the paint!

@@MarcoFrisoniNJM thanks for the response! I’ll give it a try. I was using cheap synthetics and also tried old sable so perhaps my paint was too thick or i just need to practice technique. I’d love to see more videos on this kind of oil painting!

@@carnajom8831 yeah 99.9% of the time is the density of the paint and/or the thickness of the layer applied, don't worry too much about the brushes 😉 There will be a lot of oil painting soon 😉
