Hi Sanne! I have a question about buying books on bookdepository.com. I wanted to buy three paperbacks (The Mortal Instruments part four through six) but I looked at the size measurements of the book, and it's a size smaller than "normal" paperbacks, including the first three books I already own. Is this the case with all paperbacks on bookdepository.com or just that one? Because I couldn't find the books I wanted in the correct size at all. 😞

I haven't read the book yet, but I did enjoy the film. However, I thought the script wasn't very good - not sure if that's similar to the original text but I didn't think much of the J.G. Ballard book I have read, Crash. Cinematography, acting and soundtrack were fab though.

SO happy to hear the film allows women some more agency. The environment Ballard creates is so interesting, but I did get that squicky vibe of misogyny throughout. Jealous of you UK folks; we don't get the film in the States until May! :(

The film definitely gives the women in High-Rise stronger roles and more defined presences in the story's action than the book- better than Ballard at any point. Ballard's writing is really interesting to me because he has such a unique style- but his life experiences obviously damaged him a lot and it shows in his work.

How old are you ? You look like your about 74 years and 27 months old and you read books for a living but your pretty neat keep up the content ❤️💚
@ImmortalElfchild8 жыл бұрын
I agree with you about the abuse in this film; the treatment of women, children and animals were extremely uncomfortable for me, and the fact that everyone who isn't being abused are the abusers and really horrible human beings. So I had no connection to most of the characters and those that I did were treated the worst. I'm a fan of Tom Hiddleston but this is the first thing he's done that I felt so uncomfortable with that i dont know why he wanted to be involved. And one thing that needs to be said; if there 'needs' to be content like that in a film (namely abuse and rape) it really should come with a clear warning so people affected by these things dont have to be subjected, like 'contains sexual violence and abuse'. Because from all I've seen and heard about it, apart from the book which could differ a lot from the film, and a few rare reviews there was nothing to indicate what the film would contain.
@mabusestestament8 жыл бұрын
I guess he wanted to be involved because uncomfortable stuff is part of the human psyche and can be highly fascinating to explore.
@rachaelharrison73028 жыл бұрын
Do you think there is any connection between Laing and Dr R D Laing the psychiatrist? I also thought the treatment of women was much better in the film than in the book. I can't imagine the film would have had a good reception it if had completely copied the book!

I found the film to be a complete and utter mess, honestly. It was clearly set out to shock, baffle and disorientate the viewer but it didn't make me want to figure out for myself what was going on and more isolated and made me want to leave my screening several times. Cinematography was A+ though.
@Indietrix8 жыл бұрын
I thought the disorientation & violence/sex was quite in keeping with Ballard's book- his authorial advice is all about distancing you from action and talking about horrible violent stuff. I think in that sense Wheatley's got quite a good handle on the material- although it doesn't make it an enjoyable (or even bearable) watching experience.
@misanthropyandpuppers26918 жыл бұрын
Indietrix I wouldn't know about the book as I haven't read it. All I got from the film was there's a class divide and as the building starts to fall apart so does its inhabitants. Which summarised, seems fantastic and really my kind of thing. But its portrayal could of used some work imo.
@Indietrix8 жыл бұрын
Emma Tomlinson I think the book's better than the film, but then Ballard's a favourite writer of mine so I would say that! If the film has one major flaw, it's that it over-focuses on class/materialism. I think that's an important, major theme, but it ignores something really subversive about the story, which is the notion that actually all the characters are at their happiest getting to murder/abuse each other. Horrifying! But interesting! (Like all Ballard's work)
@misanthropyandpuppers26918 жыл бұрын
Indietrix You're definitely selling the book to me, which isn't something I thought I'd ever say after watching the movie.
@Indietrix8 жыл бұрын
Ballard's life was a bit tragic- he spent a lot of his childhood in an internment camp and his wife died very suddenly in the mid-60s, leaving him on his own with three kids in suburban England. So all of his work becomes about these isolated, strange people who are disgusted with humanity, but he always takes a keen edge of humour to it, and he never wrote anything like the 'set the world to rights' genre that sci-fi can sometimes be. He was a very experimental writer, prefigured cyberpunk, and academics loved him. He does have a relatively mixed legacy due to his views on women (he treats them like people, but usually horrible people) and his later novels being quite right-wing. Similar to H.P. Lovecraft in the sense that his writing is important but somewhat problematic. I would also check out the director, Ben Wheatley, and his other films- they all deal with alienation and isolation in one way or another, and have some amazing imagery in them, but they're all very uncomfortable watches, which IMHO is why he's a good Ballard director.
