The new film from acclaimed director Ben Wheatley in UK cinemas March 18th.
Adapted from J.G. Ballard’s visionary novel by screenwriter Amy Jump, HIGH - RISE stars Tom Hiddleston, Jeremy Irons, Sienna Miller, Luke Evans, Elisabeth Moss.
1975. Two miles west of London, Dr. Robert Laing moves into his new apartment seeking soulless anonymity, only to find that the building’s residents have no intention of leaving him alone. Resigned to the complex social dynamics unfolding around him, Laing bites the bullet and becomes neighbourly. As he struggles to establish his position, Laing’s good manners and sanity disintegrate along with the building. The lights go out and the lifts fail but the party goes on. People are the problem. Booze is the currency. Sex is the panacea. Only much later, as he sits on his balcony eating the architect’s dog, does Dr. Robert Laing finally feel at home…..

This film is genius. It hurts to see how many people don't like it but i can understand. You really have to think about this film for it to make sense which is hard and disturbing because you feel like you are going insane in the first 10 minutes. It's absurd and grotesque and fast and slow at the same time and i think it's the perfect example for needing to rewatch a film for a few times because you will notice something new everytime and either it will make more sense or less but it's really interesting. It also shows human nature and society in a very raw way. Chasing pleasures to the level when there is no more satisfaction.

I thought it was him but wasnt sure. I went through many months of obsession with Com Truise after I discovered him, he is fantastic. Im overdue for revisiting him. His music is the perfect blend of nostalgic 80s themes with modern production techniques and sensibilities. Very laid back chill music. Engaging enough to listen to with focus, chill enough to listen to in the background while you work or focus on other things. He plays live drums in his live sets too, which gives it an entirely new intensity than his recorded songs. I recommend the live Daytrotter Sessions if you can find them

Such a gooooood film! I first became aware of the production a year before release, when I discovered Ben Wheatley was attached to the project. Having watched a number of his other films, I knew this would be something special. Then I became aware of the all-star cast involved, and I was sold. It was better than I thought - surrealist direction, thought-provoking cinematography, intelligent writing and compelling performances made this a cinema experience that will be difficult to forget. 10/10

Finished watching the movie, overall while a confusing flick at first, I thought that it was still good once you analyze the setting and what the characters are talking about. Basically, you simply cannot run away from the world around you, as it will eventually catch up to you. Doesn't matter how high of a class you're in, ignoring what needs to be done or your surrondings is not a good method as you will go mad. Like how the mother in the film changed the TV from a News stations to some movie, they were purposely isolating themselves from the rest of the world. The kid that was watching the news however, didn't stopped there, and at the end it shows that in spite of everything that happened in the tower, he was able to still be able to hear the news from the makeshift radio he made, furthering highlighting the importance of being aware of what's happening outside of your social bubble. There were other messages jumbled up in there too, what I mentioned was just the surface. In the end the movie was certainly not perfect as the pacing is off and that is one of those movies you can't "turn off" and watch (Which is the whole point of what the movie is trying to teach you), but I find it to be a good film overall.

The most confusing movie I have ever watched, even more than Cloud Atlas and The Counselor.I understand the concept of the building representing society and its classes functioning on a capitalistic fundamental but it felt really disoriented.

Yes, i was also waiting for the moment of clarity , but i guess it is left on you personal interpretation. I think that they wanted to tell how capitalism is basically survival of the fittest.

Wheatley's the kind of auteur whose films are each so uniquely spectacular that a trailer will give you nothing of the real magic; having said that, this looks like it could be the most magical yet.

Agreed. The book was magnificent, and the two trailers for the film (this one and the teaser) were nothing short of extraordinary. Unfortunately, the film was a rather convoluted mess and felt lost inside itself.

@@NESherv I still enjoyed the film, but do agree. Wilder and Royal were considerably toned down, which I feel played a huge role in the lackluster feeling. I understand some of the changes and why they were made, but it seemed so odd having somethings that seemed rather important to the atmosphere not be there but then having very random bits show up that provided little context. If you haven't listened to it, the audiobook is wonderful and it's Hiddleston reading it. He does a fantastic job

Watched the movie yesterday. Had trouble sleeping. Spent my day thinking about it. The film had beautiful scenes, i loved the 70s vibe, I think the introduction to Robert was interesting. Over all the film was....... unique. I feel like after the first 45 minutes it just fell apart and turned into a muddle of sex scenes, sluts, parties, misogynist actions, rich assholes, rapists and much more. The film really fell apart and truthfully felt like a horrifying fever dream. But honestly I cant stop thinking about it. I cant get the film to leave my head. I think I might re watch it. It was a bad experience but it left me so puzzled and lost looking for answers that I am so intrigued. It's like no matter where they are in this building they choose to stay. No matter what floor they reside on they are all the same. Horrible, scummy and just dirty people. But the worst of all is the main character the one who will do anything to fit in. You can see beautifully portrayed in the film the moments when Robert feels uncomfortable or disappointed with something. But he joins anyway. The rich, poor, young and old. No matter who it is they are all in a horrible system and they blame other people and they do horrible things. But oddly enough they never leave. Even after a suicide or someone getting raped the cops are never called...... I have to re-watch the film and read the book. I personally need to make logical sense of this.

Just watched it. There's 70s hype, there is the classic idea of decomposing society, there is a set of great actors acting nice but: - plot is weak. - the unnatural dialogue made me cringe. - Elizabeth Moss' accent was horrible. I've enjoyed reading the novel very much but this adaptation is just terrible. First 30 minutes get you hooked but then it's just monotonous Golding-esque set of clips with quirkily dressed people acting weird. It felt like an hour and a half indie music video with no purpose whatsoever.

@Billy West I don't blame you. Same problem. Watched it in parts over one day. You don't miss out that much if you don't finish it. There's a rape, Hiddleston character saying to rapist he may be the least insane of all of them (medical opinion from a doctor), society dissolves, fully clothed sex scene with pregnant Elisabeth Moss and Hiddleston covered in paint, shots of dissolved interior of high rise, pool filled with bodies... Evans eating dog food, surprised how good it is.
