I wish my refrigerator could feed me! Mine merely preserves my food by storing it and keeping it chilled. Must have got an older model 😅

As someone who read this book and directed it for a college course, bravo! Wonderful video and would love to see more deep dives into things like this ( I mean that's mostly what you do, and why i'm subscribed....but just..this was a fantastic video!)

There was a nod to the film Zardoz, a film which I’ve never liked, despite getting the message, and I like the fact that, it’s not a global apocalypse, the rest of the world carries on, almost oblivious, and the people in the block can leave whenever they choose....and the nod to Thatcher also

This reminds me of John B. Calhoun's experiment with the mouse utopia, "Universe 25." They, like the mice didn't do anything productive and exhibited aberrational behaviors that ultimately led to their extinction.

This was my most anticipated film of 2016. I loved the visual style I saw in the trailer and was thoroughly pleased when I saw the full movie and saw that that style and finesse carried over. I was very tired when I saw it (plus I arrived a bit late at the theatre because of traffic) so I was completely confused the first time I saw it. After watching this, I think I'll go back and see it again and think about your points. Thank you so much for the video!

I think you can read an awful lot into this film, and some of it is warranted and some is pure conjecture. Mostly I found Highrise to be a whole lot of aimless twaddle. Looks good, has some interesting ideas, and commits to none of those ideas. I was intrigued and excited for this flick; then quite disappointed by it.
@N0va2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I haven't enjoyed a single Wheatley film because he never really executes on ideas.

I truly think that that movie is supposed to feel aimless

You do so many videos on movies I've never heard of. This probably shouldn't be a surprise, as I don't watch a lot of movies and don't pay too much attention to upcoming films, but still!

There was also a controversial psychologist called R D Laing which is referenced in the book as well I presume.

I read the book as a teenager back in the 80s. It disturbed me a great deal and I'm nowhere near squeamish, especially back then. Ballard was an expert at exposing how fragile is our sanity and civility, as a society as well as individuals.

Love your video essays! I've seen you reference it before, but I was wondering if you ever planned on making a video on Children Of Men. I feel like you would make a great video on it (I understand if you're busy w/ the Left Behind movies tho)

I'd suggest checking out the older BBC series connections, it covers tech and how things got that way.

It grows on you after repeated viewings. It will likely have a strong cult following in due time.

I doubt it, too much gratuitous sexualization and the female characters are barely explored. Will age poorly.

Hey Leon, I have two questions. I've never seen any of Werner Herzog's movie, which are worth watching, which are worth skipping, and which are your favorites? I know he's the "Kubrick" type who's never really made a "bad" movie. Also, not requesting, but are you going to analyze Stranger Things ever? If you like Alien, The Thing, or Evil Dead (or really any 70's-80's horror movies really) you'd love it. Once I get a job soon I'm going to sign up for Patreon by the way.

My $.02. Herzog isn't in the same league as Kubrick....just different. Crazy and daring for sure. Fitzcarraldo is pretty good...the story is rather unbelievable, but worth watching once. The documentary about it is interesting. Aguirre was ok. At least I got it from the Library and didn't have to pay $15 for it. At least wasn't as long, but not up to the hype..if there is such a thing among fanboys. I think I saw grizzly man on TV. It was ok, but certainly not great.

I'm dying to see this movie, but in seeing the dog's leg and knowing that these sort of films tend to use animals as symbolism that often ends in violence, I want to be prepared for animal death in this film. Is there a lot of it?

They didn't want to, living in the High-Rise is their reputation in the outside world. Inn the book they cut off every phone service so that they may never be connected to the outside world.

This film annoyed me to no end when I saw it in the theater, to be frank. The narrative was just totally all over the place. A consistent suspense curve was almost non-existent, the characters' motivations were not at all convincingly presented and the impact of the various plot points were very poorly presented. The hidden meaning behind it all may be complex and clever and all, but that doesn't make this a good movie from a filmmaker's perspective. Other than the at times great visuals this movie didn't offer me too much. Or, well that's just my opinion. Very interesting analysis, however!
@fabiesque8 жыл бұрын
it looks great and there is a lot of potential. But I did not perceive any other consistence. At the end I was very irritated. I left with nothing in my "pockets"
