Yes, people who accuse him of being a Rule's Lawyer have never played with a Rules Lawyer. Tom asks for clarity on things, Mark clears it up. A Rules Lawyer is someone who at every opportunity, will interrupt gameplay to insist the DM is missing something and if the DM says it's not important, persists and argues.

No ones said it so here it is. Prismatic Spray uses a spell slot, Counterspell uses a spell slot. Rules as Written, you can't cast both on the same turn. Unless one is cantrip.

I've always thought it was weird that you get no benefit for upcasting Counterspell if it's shy of the level of the other spell. If I was one of the designers, I would've made the DC 10 + Opposing Spell Level - Casting Spell Level.

If you counterspell a 9th level spell, casting at 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, or 8th spell has the *exact* same outcome. So I get where OP is coming from. On the other hand I haven't had enough experience with 5e counterspelling to know if subtracting the level makes it overpowered. My gut says yes, because then the DC to counterspell a 9th level spell with a 3rd level slot is 19, but a 4th level slot is only 15. A happy medium might be to add the number of upcasted levels to your roll for the save, so the DC would be 19 in each case but you'd get a +1 if cast as 4th level. Narratively this makes sense, but also lowers the tension (and cost) whenever counterspell is used. RAW to counter that 9th level spell you have to decide whether to use your highest slot or make a DC 19 save. With the addition you can drop one slot and make the save with a +5 bonus, which you are almost guaranteed to make. The decision isn't as critical AND you get to save your higher slot for something epic. So that's 3 paragraphs to basically say I see OP's point, but agree it doesn't need changed.

The globe of invlulnerability... Not trying to backseat, but thinking about using it myself. Isn't part of the description that you can't just boost low level spells with higher level spell slots, meaning that Dispel magic won't work? I understand Katie seeing nothing hurting her, then running off to hurt something else, but melee attacks are kind of the hard counter, the way I understood it, to break consentration.

Thematically you can imagine the trigger for counterspell happening immediately after the spell you're countering is cast, and you use abjuration magic to stop the spell from having any effect. The original caster has already completed all the components of their spell, and you react just before any effects take place. For your question, that means by the time somebody is countering your spell, you're done casting the first spell and can move on to the next one. In this case, your own counterspell. Mechanically it also checks out because the only thing that prevents you from casting other spells during your turn is casting any spell as a bonus action. That specific rule though is so convoluted and confusingly written that everybody does it differently or ignores it entirely. Hope this clears it up a little?

I know this is over year ago, but it's a question I can answer. Shield is not a concentration spell, so you don't need to make checks to maintain it. It's one of the things with shield, that once a creature used it, switching to AOE attacks for the round is advisable. It also means shield stacks nice with blur, mage armour and shield of faith too! :)

That would be up to DMs discretion. A great example was on Critical Role. Someone was charmed into "attacking their friends" and the spell is described as seeing the caster as a trusted friend but the DM overruled it because the context is clear.

If my player had thought of that, and I didn't have the NPC use their action to take exacting control, and I was not at all specific about the wording, I would absolutely let that happen. It's always to be super careful with your wording, just like a devil of ifrit could screw you over with a deal because you weren't careful about the terms, it should be perfectly fine for a player to screw over an npc that wasn't careful with wording either. Also I'd be super proud of them for finding loopholes, I love it when my players try to be creative.

The rule is if you use a spell slot as an action you can't cast another spell slot as a bonus action and vice versa. Zarkira used an action then a reaction which is allowed. Also she's got godlike levels of power so even then I'd say it's okay

If you cast a spell as a bonus action (note: this includes rare bonus action cantrips such as Shillelagh), the only other spell you can cast that turn is a cantrip with a casting time of one action. Meaning you would not be able to cast Counterspell on your turn. However, if you do NOT cast a bonus action spell, but you use an action to cast a leveled spell, you are still capable of casting another leveled spell as a reaction even on your own turn. Zarkira casting prismatic spray and counterspell on the same turn is legal RAW. 👍

The two spells per turn rule isn't a rule. The rule is that casting a bonus action spell prevents you from casting any other spells that turn (so no reaction spells or action spells) i believe. In this case she used an action spell and a reaction so no bonus action so its okay.
