I am very late to this and I don’t know how in 9 months I didn’t see this anime. This anime is very good and I really love the story. I got a concussion recently and was suffering from sleep deprivation and so from 11pm to 5am I watched all 15 episodes of this (I shouldn’t of been watching TV but I had a headache anyway so screw that 😂). I absolutely fell in love with it and the theme music will always be nostalgic and I’m happy with the ending and how it left you while unsatisfied able to accept that this might not have a continuation. Although binging 15 episodes of anime or about 6 hours and 15 minutes in this case kinda messed with my mind a bit.😂 I wish they would’ve ended with Ono saying something but an endings an ending.

The level of love and detail for retro gaming in this anime shows that the creators made this as a simple love letter to their youth. A time where you could walk into an arcade and play for as long as you'd like on your allowance, where you'd meet friends, and, like this show, meet that certain someone for you. Merry Christmas Isla!

Interesting enough I was the same fanatic as Haruo, always reading all the video game magazines and always only talking about games (not that I have any other interests now XD). This is such a cathartic show. I think there is no other anime I can relate to so much as this one. Absolutely beautiful.

Whatching this made the young me come back to life, I even got my self a SNES classic just for Street Fighter (and Star Fox... and Secret of Mana... and F-zero... and, well you get the point), I relise that my skills have gone, no longer can I complet it with out losing a life but we all have to start at the begining again, don't we. Oh and the love storys is okay :) It was the true golden age of home consols (and the wars that came with them).

Highscore girl for me is a "what could have been" type of relatable other than "The good old times" type. And while yes i grew up having a console (ps2 and psp) i never experienced playing with others , we had an game arcade place near but i was to shy, i always played alone competing with my own highscore rather than competing with others and meeting new friends. I was always shy and reserve only speaking ti someone if either i know them or i have to (reunions and such) and now that I'm about to go to college watching highscore girl made me think "damn, i should have got out more" "I should have talked to this guy" "i should have played with them" "i should have made more friend". So yeah this anime just filled that "what could have happen" memories of me, childhood fantasies that i never got and now that im about to go to college just wish that i could have had.

I grew up in america and I resonated with this anime more than anything in my life and im a grown man .. it literally follows such a similar path to my life up until adulthood . The arcades the thrill the love lost and gained off of personal priorities and not realizing what's right in front of you for years is exactly my life . The thing that got me the most tho is the fighting game scene and where I lived there were local spots just like that and although these two women in my life weren't the gamer type but around the scene its exactly the type of anime to which if you grew up in the fgc feels so real . I cried like a baby through the whole anime . And definitely worth getting into. You might get stuck like me in an emotional Rollercoaster.

I always loved this review (originally watched it after I finished season 1 last year), but I'm really sad that you are still the only anime KZbinr I've seen (with some reach) that's talked about High Score Girl. It feels like a lot of people, especially anitubers, slept on this. I understand that's due in a large part to Netflix Japan holding it back during it's original season (with most people moving on to other anime seasons by the time it moved west), but it's discouraging that even with a second season (that suffers from the same issue) people are still sleeping on seeing the first. I hope to be wrong some day and see a brand new audience pop up for it (maybe after season 2 becomes available in the west) I love the series and I love seeing people enjoy what I do (makes me feel more connected) Thanks for making this review though. Your content is pretty great from the few videos I've seen (Millennium Actress and this one) Might have to check out more sometime :)

One of the best Anime I have seen in a while. As an 80's kid, and a Street Fighter fan , and as a now married man who lived in Japan with my wife, this Anime connects with me on so many levels. Kids used to walk and bike to local arcades where just $1 was enough to play about 2 hours. When Street Fighter 2 came out , everyone wanted to challenge each other from a 6 year old kid to the old boys in college. Arcade games seemed to be magical, because kids could not imagine having video games with advanced graphics at home.

Completed the show yesterday... And I have to say: what a fantastic show, definitely my anime of 2018 no questions asked. As a gamer since 1990... This may be the romance anime closest to my heart. Makes me remember my childhood when games were essentially the only thing I talked endlessly about (much to the discontent of my friends) and the only thing on my mind (not that anything has changed 28 years later XD). It's so amazing to see a show that doesn't paint excessive gamers in a negative light but embraces this (most beautiful!!) passion to such an extent. As someone who is as passionate when it comes to this hobby High Score Girl feels so refreshing and especially so encouraging. The background knowledge the original writer/mangaka had is out of this world, this show goes way beyond little references, way way beyond. Also seeing all those game developers (I just wished there were also Nihon Falcom references... well, it can't be helped) cooperate in an attempt to create what I would call the definitive love letter to an bygone era of gaming, seeing this most important period of mankind's history made me literally tear up. In addition to that none other than Yoko Shimomura, who composed game OSTs since Front Mission on the Super Famicom, who became most famous for the soundtrack of Kingdom Hearts and who most recently made the OST for Final Fantasy XV composed the soundtrack for this show.

Such a warm and candid review of this hidden gem that needs to be exposed to the gaming community... as a 90s kid, the gaming references bring such good memories of more simple times, on which the human Interaction meant so much when growing up, along with good friends and family... the games portrayed in the anime are quite as important and also bring such tasteful scenes of gameplay, but at the end, it shows how we can relate as we grow up older and make choices in life... Love the anime! The games being shown were awesome and knowing what is coming next is nice. I really do hope they continue the anime.

This anime hit me in all the right places and was a joy to watch. Even suggested it to my girlfriend....ep3 made her cry for a few hours. We both ended up having the same reaction at the end of the season..."why did it end there? Why isnt there more yet?" As a side note to people saying it has typical anime harem tropes.....I guess I've lived the life of an anime protagonist lol...this kinda thing can happen. Declining one girl over the other is the hardest part though

I wished the anime show us why Ono is afraid of speaking

Everytime I watch anime I can only watch like 2-3 episodes per day. But when I watched this one, i finished both seasons in a day! I became so attached on this anime and I can say that this is one of the best anime that I saw in my entire life 💯

I really liked this anime. As a fighting gamer, specially in the 90s this brought me a small tear. This series reminded me a lot of Daigo The Beast Manga. I've always wanted an anime about fighting games, so this was definitely for me. I'm not a romance type of guy but even the chibi romance was well handled here. The art and animation was perfect for this show. Wich makes me a bit more confident about JC Staff for season 2 of ONE PUNCH MAN. I really hope they don't fuck it up. But anyways, overall i was surprised by this anime and i can't wait for the next season. Also hope they keep the focus on Street Fighter. xD

Thanks for this. I have a hard time convincing others to give this show a try and for me it was clearly near the top during summer season. Really nostalgic and heartwarming trip definitely worth the time. And Merry Christmas to you as well!

Honestly, what hurts me more than ever is the fact that by Episode 12, Guile is a just a relic, from a game he doesn't play anymore. I really liked the times when Yakuchi interacted with Guile, too. Sadly, he doesn't play the Street Fighter series anymore.

being 33, and just being a 90s kid, this anime just was an absolute home run, charming, silly, wonderfully stupid, and just sweet. great vid!

This series was supremely nostalgic and took me back to my childhood! I really enjoyed watching this series and also, watched to see which games I played. All of the fighting games I played but. Some of the Japanese games obviously because of being here in the states. Highly recommend for those 80’s and 90’s kids!

To me it's clear this show is not for kids, and it's not even about video games. It's a knockout, class-based love story that Mark Twain would have written if he were born in 1973 in Shibuya. It's seriously that good.

I came for the games as I'm a huge retro gamer and stayed for the characters and story. If you want to learn more about retro gaming/arcade culture in the 80s and 90s in Japan, check out Game Center CX. Its a TV show about a middle aged comedian in Japan who is challenged to finish all of these gruelingly difficult games and its great.

It tells a descent love story, and it brings back my childhood. No anime has done both before.

Why do I feel like it's gonna end like white album the airport scene and hidake is gonna be setsuna while ono is gonna be kazusa
@Cloke1006 жыл бұрын
Sadly it is, there was no avoiding this route. Hidake had no chance of being with Haruo.

I peaked ahead at the manga to see how it ends and i couldn't really understand what happened but just by looking at the pictures, the ending is bittersweet 😧 hope we get an actual ending for them
