I NEVER felt like this series was a slog. I was invested from start to finish. It got me in a way an anime never did. That tension in the first episode after the first earthquake happens...that dreading silence...and then the alert on the cell phones went off and they all just went silent and waited for it to hit....and then it did and it was worse than I could have expected!

Ushio's score really made this series for me. Yes, it was a mess of a show, but a beautiful heart-filled mess. Yuasa is not a perfectionist, and I think that's one of his strong suits.

That eye-watering intro montage!!! Arghhh I want to edit like you Isla! So glad the best voice on AniTube is back. Funnily enough I just started this show yesterday, the first two or three episodes were seriously groundbreaking (no pun intended) for me. Not so enamoured with where I'm currently at though, it's a lost a bit of steam.
@Lazer-bp9lf3 жыл бұрын
That's the big issue with this show. The first 2 to 3 episodes were pretty good. They really nailed the feeling of helplessness, dread and misery but as the episodes progressed, the plot became a big cluster of a mess. The whole cult stuff was pointless, many characters were killed off too quickly and most of the times, random pontless things happened at random (the rap scene). Still, it was an ok to good anime. Not above Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 but close to it.

I benched watch the series. And I loved it. I felt it was a series that knows what it was doing. Using the family as a start and slowly add on and subtract it. Seeing the first couples or side character deaths. i knew this was gonna be a series that was gonna take characters. I ended up not necessarily feeling for the older daughter, but feeling the role around the older daughter. As I didnt agree with some behaviors with the character. i felt things in that moment Warning spoilers: But when the dad died, I felt my heart wrenched and collapsed in my own horror. As I could imagine that being my dad, and how devastated I would be loosing him at the moment. Or being scared to Hear him again through a Medium. I felt like I was able to link characters to people they would fit in with irl, and felt something more personal.

A lot of people seem to be putting down this show from just looking at it for purely plot/story, which I agree that the story itself is predictable as any other disaster show. However, I find that the main beauties of this series are found in the themes and topics that were addressed throughout it. Self identity, nationalism, grieving/coping during disaster, the worth of life/survival , and other relevant topics were displayed through the characters and their development. Also, the show did so well with taking a not-so-realistic situation and making the responses make sense if they really were to happen. I liked this series, and hope that others would try to give it the time and try to look past its flaws and pay attention to the messages and details to scenery :)

Because I’ve been to Japan within the last 2 years, this Anime connected with me a whole lot. I give it 9/10. Not perfect, but I found that the animation was warm and genuine like Studio Ghibli. The music was outstanding, and I was very impressed with how I felt when the characters died. The feeling I had when I knew that they were sacrificing themselves was warm and wasn’t overdone; baked just right. I also like that Japan sinking is an imaginable and arguably plausible scenario. The narration of despair was also really good in my opinion, as I didn’t know what to expect, and whether characters were going to survive or die. Brilliant!

I think you hit the nail on the head here. Kensuke Ushio's soundtrack is what really connects you to the characters, in a way that the writing alone doesn't quite manage. Haruki's run is so impactful largely because it has the power of Ushio's music backing it up. Same with the final scenes of the series, too, which is really well-edited but it goes from "this is pretty cool" to "I'M NOT CRYING YOU'RE CRYING" thanks to that 'The Sun Will Rise Again' track.

If you haven't, I reccomend it; I know it may seem a bit commercial next to most of the manga and anime you review, but it's hype is well-deserved. I prefer the less popular anime myself, but Haruhi remains one of my favourites. I'd love to know your reaction to it, and the movie is incredible, its treatment, approach, totally different to any movie of an anime show, which usually just seem like a long episode; The Dissappearance of Haruhi Suzumiah is anything but.

I hope this means KITE didn't die. Go thought the fire died but it was actually alive it might be the same with KITE.

Isla, love your videos. Love your writing. Love your voice. There are things that only you can do. So here is what happened. I just finished watching all 25 episodes of Shinsekai Yori in one sitting. (This almost never happens.) It's a great show. I felt a bit empty, so i looked up the reviews. Digibro made a 40 minute video, and is wrong. Somebody made a video called "Digibro is going to be wrong". Made me laugh. End up watching Arkada, and he did his usual thing. Takes it apart and examine the parts, which I usually like. But I feel that the review of this show should be more... heartbreaking. I should suffer the death of shame for asking this... But, have you watched that show? Would you like to give it a try? I feel like you might be moved to make a video about it. Either way, thank you so much for all that you have done. No matter how many times I watched them, your videos always touches me deeply. Thank you.

A major part of the novel is Japan itself, not just the story of the people in it. It’s the connection of the Japanese people to Japan. That’s why I feel this version of Japan Sinks is well stylized with the background of Japan taking the focus over the character design but that’s just me. Overall great anime and great review. ☺️

This has to be one of the realist animes Yuasa has ever done.

That was a really good anime, really made me feel uneasy everytime. At any moment I get ready for someone to die randomly hahaha. That rap part was so wholesome
