The CWops Test, also known as the CWT is a one hour Morse code event that occurs every week at four separate times. Hosted by the CWops (a club for CW operators), this event happens every Wednesday at 1300z and 1900z, and every Thursday at 0300z and 0700z. This is one full our of one of theses sessions where I participate as a "runner", which means I call for stations to contact me. Search and Pounce (S&P) stations move from one "runner" to another.

You’re an inspiration. I’ve know code for 30 yrs but recently took a huge interest in pushing beyond 20wpm. Last week’s 10m contest nudged my speed up a bit, but I need more practice. I recently learned about CWT, and I plan to join y’all next Wednesday. I need to figure out N1MM before then, and get my PC connected to my radio too. Thanks for publishing this video 😎 de N7TX

Hi Steve - first I wish to apologize for the lateness in my reply. I was sick and got waaay behind. This is my last response and then I am caught up finally. Thank you for your kind words. That is wonderful you are pushing yourself. It's an awesome personal trait to have discipline and drive! I hope you have figured out N1MM by now and have participated in CWT a few times. See you on the air! 73

Ok I learned a lot from this. Everything is mostly a macro except occasionally slower call verify and exchange. This makes sense and makes things a lot easier for us beginner CW contesters. Looked like KC? got spooked when he actually got a reply lol! Done that.

Great exercise and practice a lot of those answering you were sending much faster than you. Well done.

I’ve been looking on ways to connect the n1mm to a pc to send, just like your doing. Is it possible to do that with the digirig?
@RedSummitRF
@RedSummitRF Жыл бұрын
I've not had any experience with the digirig, but I think it does the same thing. But I also think it goes about it differently than the K1EL WKmini keyer. Because of the difference, I think the WKmini can be used with virtually any radio, while there are limitations with the digirig . . . but again, no experience with the digirig so hopefully somebody reads this who know more and fills us in. Regardless, I highly recommend the WKmini! hamcrafters2.com/WKmini.html

Loved it, keep these coming! Was it in 35 or 40 wpm? BTW Yesterday I saw one guy doing something really great on TikTok that you could do too. He started a live-stream where he would send the name of people on the chat, it was full of non hams people interested. It’s something you could easily do that would grow your audience. 73!

Yeah I've seen him and other KZbinrs have taken notice too. It's cool. It's a great suggestion, but honestly I don't know where I'd find the time to be live that much. I'm at capacity now with what I produce. But yeah, great suggestion. I was sending at 30 WPM but I'm sure you noticed others were sending much faster . . . some at 40+wpm. It's kinda crazy isn't it?

@@RedSummitRF yeah, you’re sending beautifully. I can hear 40wpm but it’s painful to send at this speed. The muscles don’t follow the brain hahah also it’s technique, I use the iambic as if it was a single lever paddle. 73!

I'm sure there's a reason, but was wondering why your filter is so wide... Sounds like 2.4? You might be able to pick out some of those stations easier with 500 - 600hz

Hi TJ - I'm using an FT-897 which requires after market filters. I never bought one for this radio, and at this point I won't because I'll be purchasing a new radio within a year. I never did contesting until recently and was able to mange without the filters. But yes, absolutely, I REALLY need one if I continue LOL.

Glad brian and I didn’t have to threaten you too bad to join in. The band condx were pretty flakey at 1900. Typical summer bands. We need a go fund me for a Cw filter for that 897 😂. Do you like running unassisted? I need to try that

Thanks Jay. It's kind of a transition period for me. At this point I am saving for a new radio for the shack, and don't want to invest more in the 897. It's kind of a new challenge having not really participated in contests from home with the 897. The CWTs have highlighted my need to get a new radio with good filters ASAP.

Several observations and a question. * I noticed that several of those guys used shortcuts for numbers like n for 9, and t for zero. For some reason, I didn't expect that. * Nice job in turning down your speed in N1MM to work those stations going slower. I don't usually think to do that. If I hear someone going slower, then I will put more space between my letters, but I think that works better. * On several of those, you started filling out their information before they finished transmitting. I'm assuming that's because you've worked them before, and you recognzied their call sign. * I've always been hesitant to try to join CWOps. My impression of them is that they don't seem very tolerant of mistakes. But, I noticed that you had to ask for repeats several times. If it wasn't CWOps, where they emphasize speed, that wouldn't bother me at all to do that. Does that make you self-conscious at all when you have to send an AGN, or '?'? DE K7RLN

Hi Ralph - thank you for your comments and for watching. 1 - the shortcuts or cut numbers are common for this event. And yes, the most commonly used ones are N and T. 2 - it's nice to slow down if you can, but it isn't always feasible. If I wasn't using the N1MM logging software that allows me to dial it down quickly, I might have just did the spacing. The Yaesu menus are tough sometimes. But yes, it's something I believe in doing. 3 - I started filling out some of the exchange before they sent it because N1NM lists their Name and Number at the bottom after I fill in the call sign. Some argue that this shouldn't be allowed. It's convenient. I like operating both with and without that feature, depending on my mood. 4 - I felt the same way as you, a bit hesitant, at first because of the speed emphasis. As it turns out it's a mixed group, with more in the club than not being very willing to slow down and repeat as many times as needed. I do encounter some who will move on after I ask for a repeat more than 2-3 times. But I've learned to not care about that anymore. They are in it to make as many Qs as possible and I get that. I slow them down. As for me and MANY others, we are there to improve and fellowship so I'll always stick with a person and slow down if I can.

Hi Red... I'm just now seeing this, so you might have already made these changes. But if you haven't, you might find 'em useful/beneficial. Firstly, consider lowering the volume of your sidetone by quite a bit. (Fair warning: tricks like that are gateway drugs to SO2R ;). You might also wanna add a space -or even a half space- between your call and the beginning of your exchange. Just my quick .02! 73! K5ZM

Hi Brian - I am using the N1MM logging software and a K1EL WKmini. The WKmini allows me to send code via macros in the N1MM app as well as use the CW key depending on my preference. I'm a lefty and I dis use the key sometimes but relied on the macros for most of the sending in this CWT.
