That Santa Cruz pier was crazy ambitious stuck way out into the Pacific ocean. Monterey Bay is not an especially protective bay, more gentle curve in the coast. Then the Santa Cruz harbor is this funny narrow inlet that magnifies really big waves.

I used to dine down at the warf with my buddy Rich My friend Kat kept her boat at this harbor. I was there for Loma Prieta earthquake. I was in the flats, my roommate was on the warf when the quake happened. Me and my pals had a boat tied to this thing and my buddy Dan lived on it. This warf was central to my life there most of the eighties.

I'm sure there were 100s of structural integrity tests performed on this 110 year old pier in the last 5 years to determine whether it was actually safe to park cars and have buildings on it let alone walk on it. That's probably why even the best engineers never saw this coming.

I can tell you've never put a toe into the Pacific ocean. It is colder than the Atlantic (east coast) at any given latitude. Water temperature in Santa Cruz in the winter can be 45-48 degrees. Sometimes as low as 42, but maybe not the last ten years.
