Cool to see this new technology. The former methods did work well, but it sounds like ultrasonic methods last far longer.

The New Artic Ships appear to be breaking out into rust. Just look at them. My husband has worked on a lot of old cars in the past, in his experience the paint has to be thick enough to provide a real and true water/atmospheric barrier. This is really the commonsense approach. Some applications of paint, from the factory, are just thin. We see this on a lot of new cars. It is important to understand that when painting metal you are setting up a barrier, blocking out water and the atmosphere. Air that in itself is often saturated with water and airborne chemicals. When painting iron, steel or aluminum you must understand that oxidation is immediate and the metals are under attack even as you work with them, for example building a ship in the shipyard. I think this is all common sense which often is anything but common. PS I also think some great advances in metal preparation are needed before paint is applied. Sadly the paint on the new Artic Ships is just not good enough for harsh conditions, at least by its appearance.

Quite agree , Mary, below the waterline I believe is fairly well covered by Anodes , both passive and active , Above waterline the best answer is careful application from initial build ,and constant maintenance of appropriate finishes thereafter due to wear and tear. Waterline is by nature the most difficult to police , whereas bad design leads to pockets that are inaccessible for regular maintenance throughout the vessel.. You can't beat old fashioned common sense and regular upkeep combined with quality materials. Unfortunately, money is god these days 😪

Ok, coming from a complete novice, isn't there an efficient enough method to prevent rust from forming in those naval ships in the first place? 🤔

@@MrCanuck78 Lol oh the public knows. All they need to do is look at any of our navy ships, let alone our sorry submarines. How about the billions wasted building 1 new ship at a ship yard that is known for building bad ships?
