I think you're going to need a lot more than one tomato green house to profit 50k a year. Otherwise you would see a lot more small commercial farms. And the fact is you don't see any. What you do see however is people with operations 10 times this size barely getting by. After you pay everyone with their hand our saying "where's my cut" you've just about broke even. This includes labor, fertilizer, pesticides, fungicides, water, soil, permits, licenses, taxes, insurance, maintenance on the green house and everything other yearly expense I forgot to mention. This stuff could easily add up to 20 to 30k a year maybe more. And if you're not using fertilizer and pesticides and fungicide be prepared to have your yield cut in half so you will have to either grow more or double you price per pound.

Big assumptions there bud. Just because you've never heard of them doesn't mean they exist? That's your logic?

@@offgridcurtisstone I have seen small scale farms. But most of them are out of business within a few years. My boss was doing this and he found that he could make way more money buying produce wholesale and catering to schools and hospitals. He's been doing this for over 10 years now and makes enough money to pay 3 full time employees. His point was that your not going to stay in business for long if you don't scale it up. That small scale stage is when you are most likely to go out of business. That's all I'm saying/asking. In your opinion is small scale garden a good or bad idea for a long term buisness? Because one day I'd like to grow and sell on my own but my bosses advice contradicts your advice. And all of this could be location based. You're in Canada? I think. And I'm in the south eastern United States. So two very different locations with totally different kinds climates and people/market.

@yeahrightbear8883 "my boss was doing this & he found out he could make way m0re money buying wholesale & reselling to schools" yes- of course buying from other countries that pay slave labor wages is going to be cheaper- thay doesnt mean you can't make an OK living brooding everything yourself.. And as for your first comment- about not seeing any small scale farms- thats very far from the truth. Yes, there are many that are broke by their 3rd year & have to go out of business, but thats the same woth every single i dustry out there just about- it can take a lot of experimenting to find what works, what crops are the most profitable, etc. & if you don't have oarents/grandparents teaching you the ropes, you caj run out of money quick. I also think a lot go out out of business hecause they dont realize how hard farming is... flower farming in particular- people think its jist walking through fields of beautiful flowers in a sun dress... & thats not the case! Lol. & for only seeing large commercial farms that are "barely getting by after paying for employees wages, Fertilizer, pesticides, etc." They're barely getting by because "big-ag- just like your old boss- buys from wholesalers overseas & everyone buys from the groceries stores because it's "cheaper" & they don't value TRUE farmers. & last- he didn't say PROFIT 50k that wouldn't be profit..

High tunnel for sure game changer only if you can sell it all!! Market is still key issue especially for those in rural areas. Location is everything.

And the cost to heat it is also wild, especially with fossil fuel prices going up and possibility of crop failure and all the labour involved. You won't bet rich but you may be able to get by.

Hi Curtis just watched your video “chopping wood and gravy” and I can’t comment there so I’m doing it here. Really enjoyed your thoughts! I’m someone who believes in God but I totally agree with your point that people should chill out! Check out Dr Micheal Heiser on KZbin he’s intelligent like you and you will enjoy some of his frank no bullshit explanations for a lot of Bible things. Learnt heaps from him. He speaks Hebrew and Greek also.
