7mm Rem Mag is my default hunting go-to. I live in Namibia, south western Africa. It suits most of our plains game and I have not had any issues getting well performing loads when reloading.

As an old anachronism, I remember the introduction of the Remington 7mm Mag, around 1962. At that time Remington was "owned" by DuPont. Factory cartridges were loaded with DuPont's 7828 powder which was not available to the public. Handloaders were frustrated in trying to find a suitable powder for this new cartridge. Eventually 7828 was offered to the public in cannister form. I also like this powder for the 270 Wby and the 25-06. Since I have a nice supply of 7828 I won't likely try any new powders for some time. Thanks for the video.

As most here know, there has been a terrific shortage of the normally used powders for many cartridges. I did stumble upon a couple of pounds each of IMR7977 & IMR8133. Boy, I'm glad I did. The 7977 delivered over 3300 fps with 140gr Nosler SB from my 7mm Remington & 3460 fps with 180 gr GMX from my .30-378, both without excess pressure and amazing accuracy. Give them a try.

Sorry to say been loading my heavy steel BLR in 7mm Rem Mag for gotta be what, 30 almost 40 years now with H4831 cause "like a fool" when one of my favorite local reloading gun shops decided to go out of business, I bought their existing supply of that powder "for a rainy day" :) Turned out to be one of my best 'investments' ever too :) On the other hand, between that and the 4350 I've been able to carry on till now and still have some left for that "rainy day" which seems to keep getting closer and closer :( One thing I'll tell you about those Hornady fancy plastic nosed bullets, when they first came out, I couldn't believe how badly they were shooting in my rifle which was capable of SERIOUS accuracy. My brother had the same problem in his 270 with them, so he wrote a letter to the Hornady CEO (can't remember his name now off hand) describing the horrible results we were seeing , especially with the higher velocity loads. Wasn't long after we got a letter back from their engineering guys to the effect, they went back and analyzed what was happening, and found that the higher velocity loads were literally melting the tips causing them to slew all over the place. The fellow thanked us, and enclosed quite a few of their 'new improved' tipped bullets which frankly have exceeded all expectations:) One thing I'll say for the Hornady guys, they are SERIOUS about their business and not reticent at all about receiving feedback, and standing behind their bullets/products like an American firearms company SHOULD. Hat's off to those people. Now about the 7mm Rem Mag, imho if you can't kill 'IT" cleanly with at least ONE of the loads available for this caliber, 1. you are a lousy shot, 2. You're Not in the Western Hemisphere, or, 3. You need an 'Express' or Rigby rifle and a GOOD 'guide' standing 'locked and loaded' right behind you - WITH ONE :)

I used a lot of H-870 powder in my 7mm Mag with 160gr bullets accuracy was superb. After that powder was ceased I went to US 869 and worked really well with the same 160 gr bullet. Only about 80 fps difference in velocity but 3200 fps with a 160 gr bullet is no slouch.

My Buddy has a Browning a-Bolt stainless he bought new in 1992. I worked up a load using Speer Grand Slam 160 gr and IMR 4831. Velocity at 80 degrees is 3100fps. The barrel heats up and the third shot is always high and right but the first 2 shots from a cold barrel are always touching at 100 yards. The rifle is zeroed at 200 and it has taken over 40 deer and an elk in the hands of several family members. Haven’t changed the scope adjustment since about 1995. Fire a shot at the range each year and shoot a couple of deer and put it away til next year.

Loving this 8133 for my 7mm. It’s powering Barnes 145 LRX for me and it’s accurate and quick. The eldx was very disappointing for me and my buddies last year with it fragmenting and losing some deer and elk last year. We have all switched to Barnes and nosler accubonds and partitions. Saskatchewan deer are tough. Lol

I’m using reloder 26 with a 162 eld-x and I am completely sold on that combo. I’m getting crazy fast velocity and excellent accuracy and have gotten excellent results out of 2 separate rifles. I’m not even loading all the way up to maximum charge, although close to max, but still getting crazy fast velocity out of my rifles which both have 26” barrels. The only powder I’ve personally used that shot faster than reloder 26 was retumbo, but the accuracy just wasn’t there for either of my rifles or my buddies rifle with the retumbo. Enjoyed the video. That imr 8133 looks like it’s just about right for 7 mag too.

I’m using ADI AR2209 ( similar to H4350 ) With 61.5gr and a 160gr accubond at 2975fps. not ideal but it was all I could find when I made the load, retumbo easily gets over 3050fps but it’s using 12gr more powder and recoils way more. I don’t think the deer will notice 75fps. Also to be honest I think a 150gr ELDX at over 3200fps is not ideal for hunting deer, it’ll absolutely explode when it hits something at that speed and lead fragments will cause bruising everywhere. a good quality bonded or mono projectile is ideal if you want to minimise meat loss. If you hit it in the engine room they’ll be dead regardless of the projectile anyway. I’ve recovered two 160gr accubonds at 100 and 120gr so it’s 60-75% weight retention and still causes all the damage you could ever need and great penetration. Only downfall is the G1 BC of 0.531, but it’s still shooting very flat to 600 yards.

@mikeford963 2 ай бұрын
@@zsoltczibula5722 I'm sure it does, but how much copper jacket are you finding separated from the core in those animals? I'm not denying the expansion performance of ELDM's, but Hornady's own recommendations, and general wisdom all round, is to not use bullets designed for target shooting on game you intend to eat. Their cores are not bonded and the risk of jacket/core separation is very high.

That's what I always liked when I reloaded for my 7 mil Remington mag Model 77 ruger. You literally would get a more stable and consistent speed as you went up in the powder charge and there was actually no way to overcharge the case. As much powder as you can fit into the case another slow burning powder regulated itself. Leaving space in the case is what created instability with slow powder.

I started long range shooting with a Remington Sendero in 7mm Rem mag 12 years ago. It's the rifle I learned to reload with too. It's consistently shot under half moa with most of my handloads. Loads I landed on were 180gr berger hybrids on top of h4831sc. Velocity in the 2800fps range. Now that I chopped the barrel down to shoot suppressed I have since tweaked my load to 168gr berger hunting VLDs over h4831sc and am getting 2700fps on a 18in tube. Accuracy is still about half moa. I played with the 162 eldx but couldn't get it to shoot in the short amount of time I had to do it. Fell back on the bergers and they've taken deer and elk easily for the last 11yrs.

@@russelklassen9174 I honestly wouldn't know. Barrel life in a hunting rifle that somebody even intentionally practices with each year is something measured in atleast a decade worth of shooting. The 28 nosler will be much more of a barrel burner than the 7rm. By a large margin. BUT the barrel life of a 7mm rem is over 1000rds I'd imagine quite easily. 10yrs of 100rds a year. For a barrel that costs 600$ to be replaced. It's a non-issue.

For anything heavier than 140, it's my 28 Nosler hyped up to 168 grains that I go to; powered, with Retumbo, and flying at just under the same 3300 F.P.S. I love shooting my Sako 7mm rem mag 24" barrel, and its easier to shoot than my .270. I use Nosler Accubond both 140/150 gr bullets and H 4831, but am out of powder and will try the IMR 4350 after i saw this video. Thanks, always exploring.

4350 is great for 7mm. I've shot both 4350 and 45955. They load out about the same weight wise, and seem to develop similar velocities.

IMO, 160 grain bullets are the sweet spot w/ 7mag; 160 partitions are my preference; 64.5 of h4831 gets 2915 and 1/2” groups; 69.3 H100 gets 2970 and 3/4” groups; 69.0 of RL26 gets 3085 and 1” groups; all from a well worn rem700 26” tube; I’m not shooting past 350 yards

Nice info ironically I have 4831 and 160 partitions. Sadly only a 24 in barrel, do you think it'll still work as good?
@robbiek5oh
@robbiek5oh 3 жыл бұрын
@@blueridgeboy6791 yes, h4831 will work great in your 24” barrel; start around 61 grains and work up in 0.5 or 0.6 increments; I would not exceed 65 grains; hodgon’s 2002 book max is 64.0 with a 162 bullet at 49.8k cup pressure; cartridge max pressure is 52k cup, so slightly exceeding 64.0 grains is reasonable

Am also working on 7RM loads. Always wanted a 220 Swift but couldn't justify cost vs use. Am working on 100 gr Sierra HP for varmint but having problems with barrel heat past 3 rounds Using H4831 SC. I found a piece about coating bullets with Hexagonal Boron so am trying that. I have some loads ready and am waiting for my local range to open up.

I will probably never own a 7 mag, unless i move to AK, which is possible. Good info to have though. I am sure it would be great for moose, caribou, and smaller bears. Also large deer at moderately long ranges (say out to 400 yds, if i can shoot it well enough). Assuming i hunt all that stuff. Lol. Time will tell. Always great to see Guy. He is an excellent collaborator.

162 eldx or 175 partition or 175 Acubond or 168 Berger classic hunter. 4831sc , 7977, 8133, H1000. I have options but only pound or two of each powder and only a box or two of bullets. Enough for development and hunting for a few years most likely.

I have been using IMR 4831 62.8gr. and Sierra Game King Bullets ,160 grain boat tails for deer moose elk, and have never lost and animal. Always good clean kills ,Bullets' always mushroom correct weather it is 100 or 600 yards. I had a Remington pump 760 in 30-06 and it kicked like a moose ,and I found it did lots of damage to the animals, I think because of the bigger bullets. So then I went to a 243 in Rugar m77 international, Beautiful gun , better for deer but ,I wanted a bigger cal. for larger game ,so my research led me to the 700 REM in 7mm mag. And I like it so much I use it for everything , you want to reach out to a deer at longer ranges no problem. And with correct shot placement it does not make hamburger out of the animal.

I have settled on Nosler 175gr ABLR for elk, using H1000. I won’t share the charge weight, but using Federal brass is works fine. The charge is too hot for WW cases. I have also shot 162gr ELD-X and they are accurate also. The platform is a stock M700.

Tried the 7977 in a 6m creed 26" bbl, 112gr Barnes. That bullet is all over the place in weight but sorted does pretty good, just couldn't get it honed in. Ex spread was in the 60-80fps range probably too slow for the barrel length. Backed it down to 7828SSC for less than .5 groups.

I don't shoot enough to justify reloading myself. I have a weatherby in 7mm Rem Mag. I have a Leupold with CDS. The Core lock in 175grain, seemed like a good choice as far as affordability and availability goes. The federal ammo is about the same speed. After watching this video, I might need a second cap for a hotter load. I think my vision will be the weak link with this gun.

I’d like to see more of what Guy does to reload for a single shot rifle, that doesn’t have a belt. I’ve heard mixed reports of doing a FL resize or just bump the shoulder. I have a T/C encore in 308 that I want to reload for.

Great content. Thoroughly appreciate & enjoyed this vid. I have reloaded 7 mag for quite a few years. Mainly since early 90s. IMR4831 & IMR4350 have been my preferred for most of that time. But recently have given H1000, Retumbo and IMR4451 a go. All have done well. I struggle with H1000. It seems bullet finicky to me. Velocities are hard to get where they should be & the barrel heats up beyond 3 shots very quickly. But Retumbo doesn't and velocities are constantly high & accuracy is very good. 4451 isn't as high of a velocity powder but respectable and sd, es & accuracy is very impressive. 162 ELDX is my go to this year. Either a near max charge of 4451 @ mid 2800s or a comfortable charge of Retumbo @ 2930s. Keep up good work gents.

Retumbo has worked well for me in 28 Nosler. With a 150 gr I am getting 3425 fps with an es of about 10 fps. My go to load will be a 175 ablr going around 3200 once I can actually find them in stock.
