The thumbnail reminds me of what it would look like if a robot had a nipple ring

@@ChaoticGoodChrisOooh it's a NIPPLE ring. I thought "It is a GIFT!" (try looking up MTV'S version of Lord Of the Rings with Jack Black).

I can vouch for the belt buckle technique, comes in handy for logs, bigger lead-acid batteries, and nondescript hunks of metal as well.

Hi, I wantet to say, that I really like this video series. And I really like that you said in the first video to start small, but I would say that you should start even smaller than an NST becaus they can already kill you. I for example startet with a bug zapper and now after something like two to three years of high voltage experienz I start working with my 12kv 30mA NST. (Btw I totally understand that you didnt show us what you can do with a bug zapper becaus it is a bit lame). What I wantet to ask is, will you at some point also show us something like a ZVS flyback driver or a MOT? Becaus a ZVS is on a simular level like an NST and MOTs are like a level after NSTs just a lot more deadly. Great series keep doing it pls and best wishes from Switzerland.

@Les I am sure, that the output of one of these handheld battery powerd bug zappers is way lower than that. I think it is probably like 1-2mA at ca. 500v becaus the circuit has a power of something like 1W and after the transformer there is a tiny voltage multiplier with three 100pf capacitors. I definitly hurts to touch the output but if you are a healthy person whith no heart problems or so it is safe. I think you are right tho that an NST or an oil burner transformers are the safest iron core mains high voltage transformer becaus those handheld bug zappers are battery powerd and use a tiny ferrite transformer not an iron core tranformer.

I use a piece of rope with bowline knots on either side and put those around the insulators

I think this guy got electrocuted cause no vids for 2 years! I need help im converting a neon sign to LED but came across one of these transformers that powers the neon. My question is if I cut the power do I have to discharge the transformer or does it automatically lose all voltage making it safe to disconnect the wiring? I hope someone can help me out.

New episodes are coming soon. ;) and to answer your question, with most NSTs, if all it's connected to is the neon tube itself, then it's safe after it sits for a few minutes. Make certain the sign is unplugged, and for added safety put a test lead across the transformer leads to ground (case) and then you should be fine.

@@ChaoticGoodChris test lead? wow i think i may die lol. I dont do neon I stick to LED but they have actual 120v running to it but i can disconnect that so it has no power to it at all. will i not die?

You MUST disconnect the 120V mains. Don't just turn off the breaker, actually remove the wires to the transformer. Assuming no shenanigans (I make no promises) and that it's a typical NST and a typical sign, it should pretty much discharge itself in just a few seconds. The glass tube and the transformer secondary can both hold a tiny charge (because capacitance) but it's miniscule. The best way to be sure is to just use a bit of wire and short the output terminals of the NST to Ground (there's a ground lug on the side of the NST, it's the bolt with no insulator on it). That make sense?
