I have the same boat, really love it. It has a Leisure Furl boom and Quantum Hydra Net radial sails. We have been out on Long Island Sound in 30 to 35 knot winds a few times with no problems. Reefing the main is VERY easy with the Leisure Furl. In that type of wind I'll reef the main to the third batten ( there are 6) and reduce the Genoa to 50%. Boat stays balanced and is still very fast and points well. If a gust hits the boat will round up till it passes. The time to reef is when you ask yourself if you should reef. Enjoy, 387's are pretty tough in rough conditions.

Thanks for sharing, Mark! I really love how the boat rounds up in a predictable manner. How's the sailing up there? We're planning on heading up the east coast for hurricane season.

Ruben's a good teacher. Helped me get a handle on single-handing my boat and is full of useful advice. I heard he recently bought a new boat with a huge Bimini! For shame!

Enjoy your videos, Matt. Unabashed and solid info on sailing the 380 hull. It's a learning experience for sure. And you do a great job at explaining it. But once you learn, you realize that you've got one helluva sailing machine.

Thanks for the kind comment...and yes, we've heard it's a sailing machine, but we're only just starting to realize it! Cheers, mate.

This is why I learn more about sailing from Fosters Journey than any of the other 20 KZbin channels I watch. You guys not only have the same questions any other novice sailer would have but you seek out experts and you share what you’ve learned with your viewers in a easily digestible way. Saves us a lot of money! Thank you Fosters for taking the time and Happy New Year!

Bravo - you finally found someone to show you how to sail properly, and think you. An now truly enjoy yourselves - I didn’t want to say anything before this episode about your sailing, but was wondering what was going on with stuff like - only running the Genoa at times, or having your sails reefed in in what I would consider light winds and of course only making 5 or less knots, and not securing boat for sailing open water - back in my young immature days I would get a rush if I could get close to burying the rails, but now retired probably not in my older age;) Anyway, like your channel, and you have a very well- behaved lovely daughter you should be proud of - see you in Kemah maybe in the future.

Thank you, Olivia is our treasure! And yes, I'm quite embarrassed with our lack of skills prior to working with Capt Ruben. His help was a complete eye opener. We have more lessons planned with him in a few weeks. Cheers! -Matt

Nice tips for high wind sailing. I learned sailing on the windy San Francisco Bay where it’s always 15-20 knots during the summer. One thing that helped me a lot coping with the wind is to start learning in smaller dinghies with a sailing club. I’m in a protected environment where I can put the boat in more challenging situations, since the consequence is a lot less and support boat can be nearby. if I didn’t handle the gust well, the boat will just capsize and I’ll just right it, if I cannot right it, I bring a radio to call for help from the nearby support skiff. Learning on smaller boats also helps internalize a lot of the feeling and reaction.
@TheFosterJourney3 жыл бұрын
It's cool that you say this, because we've discussed more than once, whether or not learning on smaller dinghies would help make the whole feel of sailing more natural - without the larger consequences associated with learning on our actual "home". Now that you say it, I can totally see the benefit! Thanks for leaving a great comment, mate!

@@TheFosterJourney As a follow up: while a gust from 12-->15kt will not have much impact on a 40ft boat, it'll significantly round up a 15' dinghy. I'm not mostly sailing 30+ foot boat now but I feel that an afternoon on a dinghy gave me more scenario to learn from than a season on a 30 ft keelboat. Hope you don't mind me posting a link to one of my capsize on a JY15 dinghy, a news chopper just happen to pass by and filmed me righting it. It was on a day where I was practicing single handed trapeze and must have capsized almost 10 times. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iKnEYYWZd56deZI

I love your Christmas decoration! And I beleive I have met Ruben, along South African coast on my circumnavigation. I have a friend onboard, and they became good friends. Say hello to him from me (and Birgitta) when you see him next! I would like to add two things about the main and the tendency for a boat to steer up towards the wind in a gust (Ruben has propably have talked about this already, but anyway): 1. If the main is sheeted too hard, the boat gets a constant tendency to steer up against the wind. Try that one day, to feel the difference in the rudder when the main is sheeted very hard, and when it is looser. So if you feel that the boat has to much tendency to steer up, loosen the main a little. 2. When a gust comes, your relative wind angle moves backwards, so with the same trimming you actually should steer a little closer to the wind. If not, the main is actually sheeted to hard relative to the wind.

Wow! That's awesome how you met Ruben. I'll let him know you say hi! -- And you're right, the two tips you shared are exactly what he was teaching us during the high wind training. I like how you describe that 2nd tip, it makes so much sense. Thanks!

For much of the lesson, we were focused on Capt. Ruben and overwhelmed being in 24 knots with full sail out. It took a few hours and letting the wind die down to 18-19 before we could comfortably grab the cameras.

i mean -sailing in high winds if necessary but for me is to slow down and go the 3 knts or wait it out... to much stress on crew and boat.....
