Wow! Didn’t realize this is a Texas - Kemah connection. Aunt and uncle kept an Islander 36 at Clear Lake Yacht Club in 60s and early 70s when the drawbridge had to be raised for us to go out into the bay. Loved it all! Catalinas have been my favorites since discovering the early Frank Butler designs. Love your boat! Good luck! Now subscribing to your channel. 😊👍

We also own one, purchased in 2018, a 2005 with 750 hours on the engine. Dutchman setup. Changed interior cushions to white, and changed the prop to a Flexofold. Great sailing boat, a little tendency to round up in puffs, but has handled 35+ winds with 2 reefs in the main and head sail at 50%. We are adding a LeisureFurl boom, should be on by the 4th of July. Enjoy!
@TheFosterJourney4 жыл бұрын
Awesome to hear! Maybe you could share a few things...How has the Flexofold been? We've noticed the rounding up tendency, especially when flying the main only. How was she in the 35+ winds?
@TheFosterJourney2 жыл бұрын
@sailing Gremlin For us it means, the boat turns toward the wind a bit during a gust. It allows the wind to spill out of the sail without over-powering it or excessive heeling. Then when the gust passes it pulls back down into the groove. We've noticed, that the smaller the headsail (reefed genoa or our working jib), the more it turns up. The larger the headsail, the less it turns up and heels more - but it also goes faster, to a point.

Bravo! I love living aboard my 42 MK2. Cats are easy to work on, easy to sail & solidly built. The Zarcor companion way doors are a good upgrade if you don’t have em. On sailing ability- Met a dude at the marina who sailed his 387 in the Newport to Bermuda race double handed and finished 2nd in his class. This was in 20-30k winds and big Atlantic rollers- said his portholes were under water the whole way- she can sail!

OK...thanks for the tip on the doors, Nancy is really wanting that modification...but, I'm seriously nervous considering the portholes being underwater the whole way! :0 However, I love hearing these types of stories b/c we intend to put her to the test! The Foster Journey , Hi Guys congrats on the boat! I have a 2009 Catalina 387, sail #150. They only built 151 of them (due to the down turn in the economy, per Catalina) They were replaced with the 385 and it is a smaller lighter boat. Our boat is on the west coast and is a fin keel (7'2" draft) and the boat is a wonderful boat to use and sail. I also have the in mast furling and it has come a long way since its inception. The rig is made by Seldon and they are a very well respected company that makes all kinds of masts , booms, furlers etc. for various high end sailboat manufacturers. Catalina reports no real trouble with the in mast furling system and continue to put them on their high end larger boats at present. I personally have had no trouble with mine, but would recommend keeping a slight tension on the free line as you furl in and unfurl, so the main sail stays rapped tightly. Also they recommend you have the boom at approx. 90 degrees so you don't get any fold or sags in the sail as you furl in. A lot of people used to put Catalina's down as being a cheaply made boat (most of these complaints are from people who have not sailed one), But as they grew and evolved they have really stepped up their game. They also now put first class sailing hardware (winches, blocks, windless, hatches, portlights, Etc.) on deck and have great designs (Thanks Gerry Douglas!). Catalina Yachts has the most return customers (buying numerous boats from them) than any other yacht manufacturer. If they weren't good, the owners would not want another one. This is my third Catalina and I Love Them. You should/will enjoy the boat as she is a good one and beautiful to boot!!!
@TheFosterJourney4 жыл бұрын
Awesome! Thanks for the great tips. We furled it yesterday with the boom pulled down and it was much better! I'll try to get it to 90 next time...Do you sail with it at 90 degrees? (PS - ours is hull 008).
@bwrigley4 жыл бұрын
No, the boom does not necessarily stay in the same position (90 degrees) while sailing, while sailing the boom can be adjusted to best suit the wind speed and direction. Flatter sail for higher wind speed and a looser curved sail for lighter winds. I also don't know if you were told, but when furling and unfurling it is best (almost necessary) to have the boat pointed into the wind or slowly motoring into the wind, so that the main sail is not loaded (with wind) when you are furling and unfurling it. The same is true for the genoa, at least for furling in or reducing sail. After looking at the videos I also realize that your mast furling system is a different system (older Seldon) than I have on the later 387's. I think that if you look up how to use the in mast furling system you will find KZbin has some good videos on the subject. In fact I remember Gerry Douglas himself doing a demonstration on a Catalina about the in mast furler. Have fun and be safe

Greetings. I know your boat very well because I (and my 2 partners) were the first owner of Catalina 387 hull number 8. We bought her is 2001 I believe, and her name at that time was Dionysus. We sold her in about 2011 when my 2 partners wanted out. The fellow that bought her changed the name to KNOT WORKING, I think his name was Cliff. I did most of the early outfitting myself and redid all the electronics after she was hit by lightning in approx 2007. If you want to know more about her early history, feel free to contact me off line.
@TheFosterJourney3 жыл бұрын
Awesome! Where did she start?
@trevorrabie61483 жыл бұрын
@@TheFosterJourney We bought her from Sea Lake Yacht Sales in Kemah, Texas. Which is about 45 mins from Houston on Galveston Bay. We sailed mainly on Galveston Bay but did the Harvest Moon Regatta in her about 8 times. It is a 152 off shore nautical miles from Galveston to Port Aransas TX. I see you still have the oversized whisker pole that I installed! You probably still have the Starboard soap holder in the shower. I made that myself and also the starboard knife and cleaner holder inside the door underneath the sink. Enjoy her, I still think that Catalina makes very solidly built boats. Your boat was my second Catalina (first was a 320) and now I have my third, a 350 mk II.

Congrats! Love you guys. I think your channel will grow & become one of the most popular channels on a KZbin. I am a little worried about you guys tho. It’s imperative for you both to learn how to do regular maintenance on your boats engine & boat in general but also learn basic mechanics for when you’re at sea & have no one else to rely on or wifi to look anything up to fix things that go wrong. No matter how new a sailboat is you have to be prepared for anything. Good luck & fair winds. Hope you have safe travels.

@@TheFosterJourney The good thing about a sailboat is that you can drive without a motor should anything happen to it out at sea. Keep building your sailing skills up & you’ll be just fine. I’m sure it has felt a little overwhelming having to take in so much at once but you guys are doing great! Maybe for now, just stand over anyone servicing for you & ask lots of questions & maybe even ask if they’ll show you how to do it while there. If all else fails just video them while they do it so you can go back & watch it when it’s time for you to do it. Haha
