If you place the closures for the zippers up near the top of the zippered area, they will get better protection and not turn into a wicks like when they are left exposed at the bottom. Good for the two-way zippers. Stay safe.
@salsanacho Жыл бұрын
Yup agreed... with tents that have a double zipper on their doors, there's a slight gap between the two zipplers. You want to keep those at the top of the door instead of the bottom, so any water that channels down the zipper doesn't leak in.

In spite of your report on this tent, I recently bought a T3X model and, while I have yet to use the tent in a violent storm, I want to say that the workmanship and attention to detail, at least on my tent, is outstanding, absolutely impecable. While I enjoy most of your product testings, it seems to me you rather enjoy finding fault in the case of this tent. I'm not sure that many tents would endure the storm you put this one into and come out with a cup full of water.

A little bit of moisture inside a tent after a major storm doesn't qualify as failure. Failure is when the tent collapses or shreds. Man up. Use your towel. Tell us when tents REALLY fail, instead of moaning every time you have to mop up a few drops. It makes you sound like a city dude who never spent a night outdoors (which obviously isn't the case... you just SOUND that way sometimes).
@theoriginalrabbithole Жыл бұрын
I believe I would enjoy the videos more if you camped inside the tent with the camera. The trailer's right there if the tent fails too badly. Ventilation and condensation are major factors in tent performance and seeing the leaks from the inside would be interesting.

For the price you pay you have to weight the pros & cons & decide if you are willing to potentially have a little rain come inside. That tent was given one heck of a test compared to others. You don’t control the weather so you get what you get when you get a rain test. Thanks Luke!!

We’ve had the T4 Overland Edition for a couple years. It’s stood up to everything the PNW weather has thrown at it. Coastal rainforest downpours to mountain early/late season rain/snow mixes to blowing a gale with sideways rain, all with no leaking. We did go over all the seams with sealer before using the first time even though it’s well taped. No issues with the zipper storm flaps. Thank you Luke for doing a review on this tent.

He wanted to do a month long test in our backyard(living in it) and the tent has been through very heavy winds and rain storms and has not leaked at all. I think that you’re right about the quality control on zipper flaps and maybe seam tape etc on some of the units that are released to us. I’d say we lucked out in that regard but would highly recommend these tents for water infiltration, ease of set up and the amount of room inside. Obviously it’s a truck camping tent being that it’s huge and weighs 1000lbs. But on a serious note it’s an awesome tent. Cheers Luke and thanks for all you do!!

I have been using a gazelle tent for years. That model, and the larger T4 plus. I have had, at best, VERY minor leaks, and, as you demonstrated, from the door. Usually, it got more moisture inside, going in and out. The ONLY weakness of their tents, that I have, is their entrances. They arent covered (at least, not the T3 and T4, so, coming into and out of them, you will get wetness from that. But, actual LEAKING, I have not had an issue with. As to the zipper thing-try moving the zipper closure to the top, and not the bottom. They are dual zips, so that should help.

I've used a Gazelle T-3 for about 4 years now: 1 year in the SE (SC, GA, NC, TN) and 3 years in Montana. It held up fine to rain in the SE. It holds up well to MT wind IF you stake down the corners and stake out guy lines from each side. Without guy lines, the sides are likely to collapse in strong winds. The stakes that come with it are junk and I replaced them all within the 1st year. The nuts that secure the wall hubs need to be tightened up about once every year or two. You will know when this is necessary because the wall won't stay popped out. I love the T-3 for off roading in my 2-door Jeep JK with my 80 lbs dog. There is enough room in the tent for a cot, camp chair and dog bed. It's easy to string up LED string lights inside as well.

Definitely like this tent!⛺️ I wonder if you should break down the leaking tents into categories either by leaks in only one place or two, etc. or by quantity such as half a cup, cup, quart. Maybe a numbering system and categories for ease of set up, cost, durability, leaks, quality of build, like 5 being the best and 1 being the worst., and your overall opinion on it This might provide more info than just pass/fail. Just a thought, but that tent seemed to hold up well for that storm. 💨⛺️🌨

Run of the mill showers, gully washers with no wind and thunderstorms with hail a little larger than a pea...it's done pretty well overall. It's leaked in two places, one was at a window area, the other a door where, as you stated the rain fly basically provided little or no coverage. Overall a great tent...not perfect but still pretty decent.

I have about 3 weeks of T4 camping, maybe 4 days of typical florida cold front thunderstorms weather wind/rain & had only minor leaks on the perimeter. The tent has so many plusses i don't mind the tiny leaks. Color is great, 60 second setup, ample space, great ventilation esp with rainfly off, bathtub removable floor. Wish there was a slightly larger fly option, esp a metallic reflective one ( dark green gets hot in direct sun) but for now best tent for me. Oh and unless u get the overland, yhe stakes stink. But i couldn't be inside a bright orange box so trust me, go green & upgrade the stakes yourself.

I own a T4 and have done so for three years. I have never had a leak. We get nasty wind out west, and not too many opportunities for massive rain storms. But I have had a few pretty good rain storms. No issues. With the ease of setup, I will deal with a tiny bit of rain through a zipper. If anyone is on the fence about Gazelle tents, buy one. The only word of caution I would give is always use the Guy wires. The walls will “pop” in with a stiff wind.
@chomp54321 Жыл бұрын
From those who have mentioned that the leak could be due to how you positioned the doors zipper, the failure could just be user error or lack of knowledge. You probably should redo the test and make sure you give it all the chances to succeed. At this point, I'll defer to the collective wisdom rather than believing that the tent actually "failed" due to design or construction issue.

I think the most stunning thing about this was how well it took the wind, I mean that thing sits like a box pretty much making it a sail. And I'm wondering if the gap at the flap is random in size from tent to tent, if that's part of or the entire reason for the small amount of water.

We bought a Gazelle T4 plus overland edition but weren’t able to use it due when we first planned due to Hurricane Ian. After watching this review, I was really nervous when we finally decided to use it camping for 10 days this last month. My experience of this tent was a bit different to this reviewer. First of all, we camped in Florida, during a cold snap. When it rained, as it does in Florida, the tent stayed perfectly dry. We ran a heater, so there was no condensation. The positives were 1) dry tent 2) enough space for a queen sized air mattress 3) Solid zippers and seams. The negatives were 1) A few tiny; I mean like pin prick tiny holes easily covered by a bit of gorilla tape. This is a common occurrence from what I’ve read. Quality control. 2) the velcro at the bottom of the screen porch door is difficult to reseal after stepping out, so we elected to not detach it when unzipping that door; otherwise we had to pull apart and reattach the velcro at the bottom of the zipper every time we used the door. If we didn’t do that, there were gaps that could let bugs in. 3) The same velcro issue affected the corners on the door side of the screen room. The poles that stiffen the front corners attach inside the tent but you have to thread them through the velcro to the outside of the tent, leaving a gap where the velcro detaches. It’s difficult to impossible to reattach the velcro around the pole so it fits tightly. I ended up putting gorilla tape around the gap to keep bugs out. 3) This isn’t, in my opinion, even a 3 season tent. When we were in Fla., the temps got down to about 40 at night and windy; the hubs held as we’d staked the tent and fly down, but we got drafts that seemed to come from under the fly into the tent. I will say that we could have staked the fly sides closer to the tent, but a lot of the drafts seemed to come through the material. Our space heater, which is pretty solid, barely warmed the tent at all. If not for the electric blanket (we weren’t trying to rough it), I’d have been pretty cold. Maybe I’m expecting too much from a (at the time we bought it) $700+ tent that’s gotten universal praise. And lastly 4) Does it take 90 seconds to set up? Probably only after having done so for a few times at least. But that doesn’t count staking out the footprint, fishing out the hub pulls when they fall inside the tent, attaching the fly, staking the tent and fly, fiddling around with the door poles, which were very difficult to set up, fixing gaps in the velcro, etc etc etc. It still took us a good while to finally get set up. My opinion is that it was worth the money as far as keeping dry in the rain, the duel rooms (the “front” room being a screened in porch), and the size. I’d not pay that much money again, though, as the rest (gaps in velcro, etc) was nearly more bother than it was worth. I’d have to sincerely think about buying another Gazelle. (Edited to add later: I did feel the material was thick enough to ensure privacy at night with our camp lights on. That’s a plus.)

Love this tent. Easy setup easy breakdown. Tons of room for family and dogs. But when it's wet and cold, you zip up those windows, and the condensation is miserable. Cold and dry, warm and wet, warm and dry, this tent rocks.cold and wet and it sucks. But this is my go to 2.5 season tent for family car camping. Keep in mind the dimensions, it's a BIG tent stored.

Really been waiting a long time for this review Luke. I love the idea of the Gazelle tents, but was really struggling between the T3X and the T4. I wanted a tent that you could stand up in, but the T4 is so long when packed you can't fit it straight into a shortbed pickup. The T3X is shorter, but you can't stand up in it. I bought the T4 but haven't used it yet, but looking forward to a test run soon. Thanks for finally reviewing a Gazelle.

I also think if you would have to zip zipper up and not down towards the ground with her not really protected it wouldn’t leak that’s how I do mine, and it never failed me
