Philip, the reason they didn’t want the money is because paying too much for stuff sold online is a common scam. The scammer will pay with a fake check and then ask for the extra money back. The scam works because bank lets you deposit the fake/bad check, and won’t figure out it’s fake/bad until a few days later, probably after you sent the scammer the “overpayment” amount.

A few years ago someone tried something like this with me on Craigslist - it was super fishy because they were nowhere near me, the item and price was nothing special, and they offered more than I was asking. So they didn’t even try to include the fake “oops I paid you too much” trick, they were just hoping that I would sell to them because they were offering more.
