A huge thank you to Doreen from the Greenwood Heritage Society Museum/Archives, Johnnie from Ghost Town Pix (ghosttownpix.com) and the Boundary Museum and Archives for allowing us to use their pictures and stories.❤️⚒
Citizens of Phoenix once proclaimed their community was the highest city in Canada. For a while, in the early part of the 20th century it was a booming copper mining community on top of a mountain of copper. It once bustled with up to 4000 copper crazy citizens and had 20 hotels and saloons, gambling casinos, four churches, an impressive city hall, a covered skating rink, hospital, brewery, school, electric power company, telephone exchanges and even an opera house. The copper mine at Phoenix, owned by the Granby Company employed 1000 miners and when operations closed on June 14, 1919 it marked the end of a wild and memorable era in Canadian mining history that began in 1891 and ultimately produced 13,678,901 tonnes of ore. Meanwhile, Phoenix boomed until the copper market fell out in the late teens. When the last ore was shipped in 1919, thousands promptly excited the mountain city, most leaving behind their homes and belongings and Phoenix instantly became the largest ghost town Canada had ever seen.

Ya, we were definitely surprised to see that much ice so late in the summer too. Frank has gone there a lot over the years and the ice used to be a lot thicker, to the point where it almost filled that whole area where we went down on the ropes. I know a lot of ppl don’t really like the history aspect to our channel, but there’s so much more to the places we visit. It’s hard to not want to share that part too. Really glad you enjoyed it :)

Great video, TY! We are from Curlew, we used to ski at the Phoenix resort in the 80's. The way the world is going I'm wondering if mines aren't one of the safer environments in which to recreate. (skiing nearly killed me)

Hi Adam & Chyanne, nice to see you guys exploring with Frank & Sharon again. The history you gave at the start was really awesome, so much detail. When you hear Frank say sketchy then it's very very dangerous lol, so much was left behind in this mine which is great for explorers like you guys as you get to see exactly what was used. A very cool part 1 and I am looking forward to seeing part 2. Thank you for sharing, much love to you both. xx ❤

Hello Sue:) It was a good time with them for sure and this mine was hiding some pretty neat things that we likely wouldn’t have found without being brought right to them. We look forward to going back, there’s lots more to see!! Take care and stay well! Xx

Didn't realise mines freeze inside. Could be scary if the ice gave way and you'd fall into flooded workings below!

For sure, that’s definitely something you’d want to be aware of and wouldn’t want to be walking around in areas that look like there may have been access to lower levels, like an area with a winch etc

@@AdventuresRUs Just asked my dad, said he was involved with the cutting and welding of the feathers, the company gave him a few hours a day to complete the project for a Greenwood parade in the mid 60's. Apparently, the bird had a place for a propane torch to be lit so it look like fire was coming from the bird like the legendary Phoenix.
