I promise it’s not too bad!! Some of them overlap too. Once you learn the skill sets you can apply them to most tech jobs!

I’m a current CS student in Univ and am considering switching to Data Analytics which is a interdisciplinary program where I take statistics, computer information sciences classes and pick a “domain” which is the interdisciplinary part. I’m planning on picking IS. Long story short - can I switch my major and still be a SWE? Or should I stick with CS even though it may delay my graduation by a year ?
@SenegoddessTech3 жыл бұрын
My nephew is currently computer science major in UCSD and had similar questions!. Honestly it doesn’t really matter. I have friends who are SWE‘s and literally majored in Event Planning and Biology! I also see a lot of math majors and even a chemistry major at Google. So long as you know how to program you’re going to get a job. Your major, internships, relevant work experience, all of these things factor in on how quickly you get an interview, but in the end, so long as you have solid skills and a resume, you’ can be a SWE! Passing the interview is what matters ❤️

I was thinking tackling Linux as a first language would be the best route to get my foot in the field. Would you recommend that at all?
@mcjon773 жыл бұрын
Linux isn't a language. It's an operating system, like Windows.10. Don't worry, it's an easy mistake for you to make if you're new. We've all done it. These days, I think the best first language to learn is python. It's fairly easy to learn and it's super useful.
@EC-vo6if3 жыл бұрын
@@mcjon77 very new. I also thought python but for some reason caught a linux fever doing research for jobs. I've been told “if you know linux companies would hire and teach you what they need” sincee not a ton of people work with it? Just want to go where I'm needed after i learn what i need to.
@EC-vo6if3 жыл бұрын
@Ryan thanks for that insight. I get it. Would you be willing to point in the right direction. I did want to previously tackle python. I did 2 weeks of java on vacation and fell in love but was told it's only good for apps and that's not hot anymore? Clearly my sources suck. The plan was linux and ccna certs as I'm recently furloughed and ready to pour in as many hours as i can daily. Thanks for help!
@EC-vo6if3 жыл бұрын
@Ryan yeah i know, I'm just now learning about the field and it's so broad. But i get what you're saying. I'll pick something and focus. I know eventually I'll have to learn most if not all to keep up as you said. Thank you for the advice and feedback
@SenegoddessTech3 жыл бұрын
@@EC-vo6if i’m so glad that you found some insight here, I love how helpful friends are in the comments 🥲! To echo what everyone else said I definitely think Python is a great first language and you should probably narrow your focus on one thing and put your energy there. I don’t think knowing Java is a bad thing at all, sure it’s super popular but it also does hold a little bit of weight on your resume because it’s such a tough language to learn. But whichever you choose, do it 100% and you’ll get 100% return regardless!

@mohammadkloob54833 жыл бұрын
@Ryan there is no need to learn kotlin?
@SenegoddessTech3 жыл бұрын
Currently I think it’s a great way to jump into tech quickly and get a good paying job. As far as I see, mobile app development is still pretty hot right now, and I think that it’s skill set can be used in other jobs in tech like, Front end development. A friend of mine actually transitioned easily from a mobile app developer to a front end developer

What do you think of Test Technicians ?
@SenegoddessTech3 жыл бұрын
That’s kind of tough because as far as I know most companies just have the developers write and test their work, it’s actually becoming more of a requirement. When I was applying for dev jobs, everyone kept telling me to make sure I had unit tests and an emphasis on testing on my resume. Quality Assurance is still certainly a role that’s going to be there (in my company we have QA, but they find bugs in the applications and create issues for management to look at) but I wouldn’t put all of your eggs in that basket
@lizzard20233 жыл бұрын
@@SenegoddessTech thank you so much for your response, I am currently enrolled in a university and am trying to get my foot in the door . A tech company interviewed me 3 times to reject me . It was for a Test Technician role.
