Highland Cows, also known as Hairy Coos, are a unique and distinctive breed of cattle that are native to the Scottish Highlands. They are known for their thick, shaggy coats, which can range in color from black to white, and their long horns. They are a hardy breed and are able to survive in the harsh conditions of the Scottish Highlands, where the weather can be cold and wet. Highland Cows are also known for their docile and friendly nature, which makes them a popular attraction on farms and in rural areas.

Let me tell you, when you wake up in a tent having not zipped the door open fully, to see an adolescent highland cow has pushed their way in to stare at you while you sleep, it’s one of the most terrifying things you can wake up to in this world. @@uwuest1793 That's pretty basic knowledge, IMO. Cows have few front teeth on their lower jaw, but not any on their upper jaw. There's also an large gap between those few front teeth and molars, so you can easily fit your arm in that gap without getting actually bitten. I've done that few times and the only damage I got was getting my arm slimed up with saliva. 😁

Highlands are wonderful creatures. Every single one I've met has been a sweetheart. They are also unbelievably soft if they are taken care of. My friend had a bull she would show in 4-H. Her family had a variety on their farm, and she could have shown nearly anything she wanted. That being said, she adored her Highland bull. He was absolutely spoiled rotten! He loved being pet and brushed. He felt like a brand new million dollar shag carpet. He had zero size awareness though and thought he was a lap-dog. My friend had to let him follow her around doing chores or else he would throw a fit. He was a hilarious creature. He lived for a long long time too. I'm pretty sure he passed from old age. He was an old boy for sure and had a wonderful life. He sure changed my perspective at a young age. I had assumed ALL cows were lacking in the brain department. I had a Holstein that was... Well... Not so smart. That Highland bull however, was very smart. It was a great eye-opener. The females they had were all sweeties too, but he was something else...

Cows are an absolute blessing. They are some of the most curious animals I've ever encountered. When being with the owner one can be sure they will come over and ask for pets and attention. Even without the owner, one can be sure a large herd of cows would not harm one when stumbling onto their field; they might come and try to nibble on your hand though. Edit after multiple warranted interjections: I am talking about German cows. Not even bulls or anything. Just the most basic milk cows that waddle around on every second grass field and look confused when you moo at them :P.
@thesoutherncowgirlpoet
@thesoutherncowgirlpoet 2 жыл бұрын
That all depends on the breed of cow, honestly. I grew up on a ranch of over 600 cows, and around the Limousin, you definitely had to keep your wits about you. A few times the "mean ones" would get out (not uncommon as cows are large and sometimes tear up fences) and instead of simply going back to where they came from when we tried to move them on foot, they would charge us. Everyone in my family (aside from me, I'm pretty fast) has been trampled at least once. Some cows if you step foot into their pasture will paw and snort at the ground, bellering and slobbering. If you've never seen an angry cow . . . it is a terrifying sight. I've also shown quite a few cows, and some of them would still ask for pets and a treat out in the pasture. However, the general consensus is - do not trust any cow that you do not know well, that's how people get hurt. If you have access to cattle, whether it be the neighbor's or family member, don't go out into their field expecting them to come up to you and be friendly. That's a very good way to leave with some broken bones. Cattle are big, just be smart around them.

Theirs alot of misinformation in this video. Highlands are actually know for being one of the of the smaller cattle breeds. I've also never seen them in any "open" cattle shows, most are dominated by "club calf" crossbreds which are usually made up of Shorthorn, Maine Anjou, Chianina, Simmental, as well as other breeds.

Hundreds of years ago these cattle, bred and reared in the the Highlands of Northern Scotland, were walked south to the huge cattle market , the Tryst, which was held each year. The journey took the drovers weeks and assisting them were their dogs, Bearded Collies. These dogs are as cute and shaggy as the cattle. They have a thick undercoat that insulates from cold and sun, and a top coat of long course hair that rain runs off. Like the cattle they are very smart and the farmers and drovers could send them off alone to round up cattle in far off mountain valleys. Wonderful animals.

I live in the central belt of Scotland and the closest Highland cow is a couple of miles away, he is the grumpiest creature I've ever met. He has massive horns and likes to charge at people. He gives Highland cows a bad name, you have to feed him fistfuls of long grass from the hill to keep him happy. He does like chin scratches but most people are too scared to get that close to him, he usually takes a swipe at you before you can reach it.

Our family has a cottage at Baltic sea and in the village where it is there is a Highland cow farmer. One day on our vacation this year we came back from wherever we were(my ADHD just restricted this info sorry) and walked the dogs and they had a baby the same day. Bro was so freshly spawned he was not dried yet and their umbilical cord still hung out. It was kinda disgusting but somehow magical because they were literally the size of my dog(18kg doge but I'm sure the cow weighed more because my dog is very fluffy and the fur adds a lot of chunkyness) and it was amazing. We then went past the farm every day when walking the dogs through the village so we could watch how the kid is doing. At first mf got dry and on the second day their fur was completely dry and really fluffy and on the third day their umbilical cord was gone. Mofo was so fcking cute they are a core memory now.(bro if photos in comments were possible I deadass would dump you on the spot)

(Long story) anyway the baby was weaned but barely and she kept bawling for her mama. It was heartbreaking. I would spend hours out in the barn in the middle of winter with her in my lap just talking to her and petting her. She eventually turned out to be a 1500+ # “playful pet dog” loved to play and interact, play “tag” not kidding. They are truly a special breed of cow especially if handled daily from a young age. Don't need a barn. A loafing shed is good, or a tarp over & down the sides of arched chicken wire...work well if 6 feet across @ hirn height!!! Hay to eat when no grass. They are foeagers & even eat growing things (weeds) that goats won't eat.
