Maybe "the fighting spirit is in my soul. And I will be a student of the moon, to make me whole." For the end of your poem. Imagine being one of those tourists but at night, seeing 2 ancient Scotsman prowling the hills. You'd think you saw ghosts.

Aye, that would of been a better ending. I actually forgot the last line of the poem when we tried filming it and that line I just added off the cuff... can't remember the ending I came up with during the night trek 😅

@@FandabiDozi Great video! Would you consider doing a video on the Highlanders' military feats of endurance, such as Montrose's winter march to Inverlochy. The Highlanders were famed for their speed in travelling across rugged terrain, and I'm sure that is largely down to their experience in cattle raiding.
@FandabiDozi

@@Weasel-vp8zk Aye thats a good idea! I will need to condition my feet more with these Highlander shoes first haha! But yeah the speed and distance they covered over indirect routes would be hard even with modern kit! Another calibre of folk they were!

@@FandabiDozi Thanks for taking on my idea! If you haven't read it already, I really recommend 'War Paths' by Alistair Moffat. It goes in depth on clan warfare and Montrose's march to Inverlochy. It's thanks to your channel that I found out about 'The Drove Roads of Scotland', which is a great read. I bought it on my visit to Perthshire this year. I'm a Sassenach really but on my mother's side I have Grant of Glenmoriston ancestry. Your video on the Seven Men of Glenmoriston and finding the Prince's cave was a fun one as well!

I told my daughter "can you imagine camping and hearing a noise outside your tent? You get up to look and there are two highland warriors tramping through? You'd think ..Ghosts!". Then I said "can we go? I could catch one and bring it home.". She says "A ghost? I'd bring a ghost home.". Thanks for the video. Your highland warriors and ghosts are safe. lol

This gives me many great ideas for creating a coming of age challenge for young men within my small community in Appalachia. I’m in the process of building a readiness group and its identity is based on the Scots heritage of the people in our area. Boys who pass the test and write a poem about it will be ushered into manhood and presented with a hand forged dirk as a symbol of their peerage. Thanks for the inspiration.

I don't think this is done anymore, but in the 1970s when my brothers were youngsters in Massachusetts, USA, they took "winter survival classes" at an outdoors camp after a two foot snowfall. The final test was to survive 48 hours (defined by keeping a fire going) with a friend and one live rabbit. You could eat the bunny. The "secret" of the test is that they made you start at breakfast with whatever you had on you (no warning) - no additional packing. If you weren't wearing your knife, you did without. Both my brothers passed their test. I still have a "lucky" rabbits foot as a memento of their bravery and courage (girls weren't allowed to take this training, I had to stay home and worry instead). My brothers learned to "be prepared", a scout motto. 🤔

Great video, you presented the historical context well and quite literally walked in the shoes of men who might've travelled that very journey long ago and under different circumstances. I hope you continue to play with this concept, maybe next time do an opposed exercise with a team trying to defend a "territory" and weighted objects as "cattle" that must be stolen either by stealth or by force. In my experience it's a pretty unique feeling hunting and being hunted in the field, and you'd get to feel a bigger piece of what those men experienced by adding some OPFOR.

Hi Tom, just a curious question that came to mind. Why didn't the highland men and cattle drovers use horses? The landscape being so rough and up and down, and their lifestyles being so similar to that of cowboys, or rather steppe nomads, who will ride reindeer, horses etc. Having all the water and grass they need as well as not needing much more than they would be carrying anyway.

I live in a small mountainous part of the new england region of the united States and it's the same here. It's gotten bad enough to where a lot of the country roads get closed and blocked off to local traffic in october when the leaves start to turn in order to keep the leaf peepers (as we call them) from harassing the locals. People come here and assume we're poor because nearly every road that isn't in town or a highway isn't paved but the real reason our roads are dirt is to try to keep the tourists contained to the touristy locations.
