I remember when this came out on video. A few buddies and I "reserved" the only copy at our local blockbuster by bribing the guy behind the counter with $20 a few days before it was released. On the release night we waited in line for around 30 minutes to get it and went home, cracked a few beers and watched. When it was over my friend Kevin turned off the TV and turned to us and said "WTF did I just watch?". He then got up and walked out but just before he left the room he turned back and said "I need some time alone to think about what just happened". He left and we literally heard nothing from him for a week. Dude was traumatized.

According to IMDB: "In the Renegade version, a documentary following the film has the filmmakers explain why the original theatrical release contradicted the first film. According to them, inflation in Argentina had gotten so bad during filming that the film's insurance company started to take creative control and made a film they thought would make the most money.

@mstaader2 жыл бұрын
Not at the theatre, but I saw it shortly after VHS release, and yes, as nonsensical as the directors cut still was, it did seem to be slightly easier to watch. Sequels to Highlander were always unnecessary, but the only way to result in one that makes sense, is to remove any reference to aliens or time travel, and have Connor take up the mentor role that Ramirez had, with a new generation of immortals
@MabuseXX2 жыл бұрын
Because it made more sense in terms of the story told in highlander 2. Even Mark points out that the solution in this cut is much more hilarious and made even less sense (in the given context of Highlander 2).

This movie was released while I was in college. My friends Kevin and John were big fans of the original movie, so we decided to go to the sequel the week of its release. I hadn't seen the original, so we rented the VHS and watched it the night before. Then we went and saw this film. We drove from Laramie, Wyoming to Fort Collins, Colorado to see it in the theater. When the movie was done I remember being in shock. We were thinking, what in the world was that, and how is it that we wasted an entire day to go see that? So yes, seeing it in the theater, after a great deal of anticipation, was a great let down, to say the least. Thank you for bringing back some college memories. Even the disappointing days were good. ;) Probably drank some vintage bottle conditioned New Belgian Fat Tire beer that day!

My dad let me watch Highlander when I was a small kid and he rented it on VHS. I remember being excited about Highlander II coming out, and my mom took me and a friend to it. Then remember the opening and thinking WTF. I can't think of any other sequel that came out and made such a big dump on the original film. I thought what made the original interesting was how McCloud grew up in Scotland and was excommunicated from his clan when they thought it unnatural that he didn't die from wounds in his first battle. Certainly a stronger story of immortals being mystical, and something he happens on.

So, Connor and not-Brenda escape and Ramirez lets the fan cut his head off.

The biggest problem with a Highlander sequel is that the plot was pretty much wrapped up at the end of the first movie. These guys have all these powers so that they can participate in "the game". They did pretty much what the Matrix did, which is also why people hated the Matrix sequels. It turns out that the plot of the first movie, was really only part of a larger totally different plot. However in Highlander's case the new larger plot was laughably stupid. Maybe they would have been better served by making it a prequel and exploring more of MacLeod's character before "the game" ended, but then the sequel would have seemed smaller and not bigger.

Here's something about the whole "exile" thing that's been bugging me to no end: Regardless of what version you're watching, why would anyone willingly return from exile? Just look at the place they were banished from -- assuming it's like that everywhere on the planet, being exiled to Earth from Zeist or just hurled centuries into the future is like being banished from North Korea and forced to live in Switzerland for the rest of your life. The fact Connor and Ramirez were exiled because of a failed rebellion more than confirms that life there must suck. Not to mention, if somebody like the Kurgan had won the Prize and decided to go back, why the hell would they take such a violent and bloodthirsty brute back into their ranks? That's like if you organized a battle royale at a maximun security prison filled with serial killers and rapists and whatnot and whoever's the last man standing is free to walk out. Plus, how does making them immortal and forcing them to fight an all-out deathmatch even work as a motivator? If the only way you can die is via decapitation, why would you risk eternal life and enjoyment for a lousy return ticket to a place you clearly wouldn't want to return to? Just enjoy your eternal life until you grow bored enough to want to end it yourself. I mean what's your other option -- return to your own world/period just to grow old and die then/there in what are essentially much shittier living conditions? Of course this opens up another can of worms: if these people are advanced enough that they possess technology capable of time travel/interplanetary teleportation AND the ability to make people immortal, why is their own world/period such an awfully shitty place to live in? Why aren't they thriving in a technological utopia free of war, famine and disease? Highlander 2's story fails conceptually on so many levels that it doesn't even matter how many revisions and re-edits they do because you can't fix something that's broken by its very design. The ridiculous retcons were pretty much the icing on top of this shit sundae.

The theatrical cut was incomprehensible. Not just illogical, but literally incomprehensible. For example, the insurance company's editors combined the December Installation and Katana's abandoned warehouse into one location and treated the two MacLeod/Katana fights as one. Connor walks from one room wearing the MAX jacket and carrying the Masamune katana, ends up in another wearing the black trenchcoat and carrying the Zeist sword, and then goes into the generator room wearing the MAX jacket with the katana again. The director's cut fixed the pacing of the film and rearranged it to follow the structure of the original script, so yes, it's an infinitely better version of the movie, even if the planet Zeist makes more sense than the advanced ancient civilization idea.

Great job Mark as usual. This is my favorite channel by far! You should make a video that rates all the movies you’ve reviewed so far from best worst to worst worst.

At least to their credit they tried to take the story in a new direction, instead of just repeating themselves. Unfortunately that new direction was completely bonkers. They couldn't have failed anymore then they did.

I lost a contact lens just before going into the cinema on my birthday, so at least only one eye saw it. The man walking out of the previous showing just turned to his partner and said "Arse."

The version that it is sent to the future makes no sense. It was established that he spent hundreds of years on earth, if that was the case, and he was exiled 500 years ago, for how many years in the future was it sent? At most 100 years, and why didn't He go to his country to see how things were going or to foment the revolution again? As bad as it is as a sequel to the first one, the idea of being extraterrestrials, in the context of the second movie, makes MUCH MORE FEELING ONE. Ps: The only thing I remember about this film is the idea of the shield replacing the ozone layer.

I had only seen this upon release in 91 (if memory serves), so I was surprised they were time travelers, not aliens like originally written. Saw the original in 86 and loved it, so imagine my surprise when this came out.

I'd soon rather piss shards of glass while having vinager poured into my eyes and having my toes smashed with a hammer than to watch Highlander 2 again........ actually, they should have that done to the writer!

I went to see this when it came out. Guy I was dating at the time was super excited about it. I remember a palpable feeling of *WTF?* in the theatre when they revealed the planet Zeist plot line. It was so bad that people were walking out.

I remember the Ziest version and I honestly prefer it. I know it doesnt fit the cannon but, as a stand alone movie, I think it's pretty good.

I think Highlander, Highlander II, all the sequels, the cartoon, and the Series (and all the series movies) are each in their own (totally disconnected) canon. An anthology series - "Highlander: What If?".

The original theatrical cut of Highlander 2 was released on DVD once. It's presented in 4:3 and it's only available in the UK, but it is possible to find it.

Just watched this video in 'Rona 2020! I remember watching the first Highlander on VHS at a friend's house. This was around the time of Princess Bride, Willow, etc. What a time for fantasy movies! A friend and I were so jazzed that a sequel was coming out, we drove over two hours to see it (closest place showing it). On the trip there, we were speculating what the plot could be and how it would work against the first movie (and how they could make a sequel to a self-contained movie). We wasted 6 hours of our lives (four hours travel round trip, roughly two hours movie time). As good as Highlander was, Highlander II was equally, if not worse, bad. Sean Connery, did ya need a paycheck that bad?

The immortals should have been written as something to do with a religious connection of some sort. That way the “holy ground” thing would make sense. A loose religious connection so there’s no focus on religion too much, if that makes any sense.

I never knew about the re-editing, retconning Zeist as the past. BTW, at least in the original version MacLeod actually was the creator of the shield.
@jackpaley036 жыл бұрын
Macleod says “it’s a kind of magic” at the end of the movie. It’s a kind of magic is a Queen song. Queen did the music for the first one. 10/10 best movie ever

Saw the first Highlander in the theatre as a kid, was favorite of mine. I was excited for the sequel, then sitting in the theater, 20 minutes in, that uhhh sh-t moment. That realization that this is awful when you so badly didn't want it to be.
@michaelb.99755 жыл бұрын
And on the fairytale ending he said "It's a kind of magic" which referenced the name of the Queen album that was also the soundtrack to the 1st Highlander movie. That was the cherry on the top of that sludgefest sunday.
