This is truly one of the saddest scenes in cinematic history. Connor defied and ignored Ramirez's advice to leave Heather and spare him the pain of Heather dying and he learns that lesson when Heather died in his arms of old age. Like The Doctor from Doctor Who once said "Immortality is a curse, not a blessing". Storytelling and writing at it's best.

True, but in exchange he spares Heather that same ache of having him leave her life forever, or to die alone. The pain will be there one way or another.

A moment of silence for Heather Macleod. Connor's first and only real true love. To have no choice but to remain young while she slowly withers away and dies...there's nothing more heartbreaking, but that is the curse of immortality. And so the Highlander leaves his homeland behind and wanders the planet until his final battle with the Kurgan in New York. Godspeed Connor, Heather will always be with you in spirit. Now I am 42 years old and still going strong, many friends are gone from my life, I am no longer the kid who only cared about playing and getting through the day, I feel like I have lived hundreds of years, I have become very wise, every day is a jewel that I cherish and allows me to know more of God's creation.

I couldn't agree more.... And what makes this scene all the more tragic and tear jerking is that it was sung by arguably one of the 20th century's most passionate performers, who put his very heart and soul into everything he sang and yet was sadly taken from us at such a young age. Needless to say, our dear Freddie will always live forever in the hearts and souls of those of us who really appreciated his vast contributions to the world of real music.

My God yes! There will never be another Freddie! He was amazing! He was my hero as a child and he always will be! And what makes it even more sad is that when 'Who wants to live forever' was sung by Freddie, by that point in time, he was at least beginning to suspect that he was seriously ill, and thoughts of his own mortality and what his own fate would ultimately be were definitely on his mind by that point. But it was something that of course he keep very private until the end. To think that he sang such powerful, poignant lyrics so beautifully, whilst the whole time, carrying the personal burden of knowing that his own time on earth would probably be very limited..... ooofff,.... it just gets me like a knife in the heart!!

If I had written the script, The Prize for Connor would have been a second life with Heather, this time as a mortal man. He'd have awoken as if from a dream, his head on her lap, both of them young again, and she heavily pregnant. Would probably have destroyed the poignancy of the film, but I'm such a big softy: I like happy endings!
@Mazgic Жыл бұрын
that is beautiful but the only thing I would cut out is the dream concept as its cliche thing about making the whole story a dream. However that is a beauftful prize, Heather, where they lived and the ability to have children. It really brings full circle how precious life and the relationships we create. It really highlights how humans are never meant to be immortal.

No love scene has ever touched me like this. The entire film is a masterpiece but this scene is truly special. It reflects on the passage of time, two people in love, enjoying life together and the pain of knowing that one day those experiences will come to an end. The entire scene moves me, but when they are happy together in her youth and she gradually ages and they remain as happy as ever is so touching. Also, the fact that (when she is an old woman) you can see in her face that she knows her end is coming and she is just trying to stay positive just breaks my heart. Her death of course sends a tear falling every time. The music by Queen throughout this film is perfect and their song for this scene is so powerful.

'Highlander' was seemingly completely ruined by it's franchising. but, in fact, it wasn't. I don't consider other 'spin-off's as canon. and they aren't. 'Highlander' (1986) was the beginning and is the end. One of the most haunting films ever made, so much heart and raw emotion

and the only CGI used was in "the quickening" effects. Suck on that action movies after the early 90's! lol.

There is no such thing as a Highlander canon since that would require the writers to think of a logical continuity to begin with. Btw "Canon" means official part of the storyline, canon is not what the moviegoer prefers to watch or not.

I consider all of the movies canon. Connor and Ramirez are aliens from Zeist.

Such a sad and tragic moment that makes a sci fi action film legendary and elevates it among the rest, It really makes you pond the question "who want to live forever when everybody you love grows old and is left behind".

I agree with Mr. Colburn as I was also in Germany from 89 to 91. I remember all those times I watched this movie with my Army brothers. We watched it again and again, wearing out that tape. Even to this day, I still watch this scene and it makes my heart feel the sorrow and loss, as Ramirez said, "You must leave her brother..."
*Sniffs* This is such a sad moment,makes you think that what good is it to stay young and live forever if someone you love grows old and dies.

As a child I couldn’t get into the feeling as much as I can now! And it’s so powerful, sad, beautiful and heart-breaking, all at the same time! It’s everything a man wants and everything he fears....

Beautiful Heather RIP princess. I have always loved this film and this clip the most. No matter what real love never dies and it don't matter how many years go by. If it's real love it lasts till the end of time
