Thank you !! Just bought a 1965 18 hp Fishwin & its doing the exact same thing. I will give this a try & keep my fingers crossed. Thanks again ! Update: Went to make the mixture richer & the knob was maxed out already. Fanagled it like you said so I could get a richer mixture, pretty easy & think I found its sweet spot, amazing ! It took my confidence level from a 0 to about an 8 out of 10, lol. You the Man !

Really good video. I have the same motor. Also having issues with the high/low air fuel mix needle. I thing it is way out of adjustment out of the parameters. I can't find anything on how to re adjust it. Ie get it back to its factory settings. If any one could help with this i would appreciate the help.

Great video. Just picked up my first project boat with one of these motors hanging on the back. Lots of work to do but I'm excited to do it. This is one of the only videos I've found that explain this motor in any technical capacity and you've already answered a couple questions of mine so I thank you for that.

I have a 1970 18hp. The lean mixture linkage is broken off. This caused me to run lean and the engine bogged down completely. Had to troll 2 miles upriver to get to the landing. I could have adjusted the lean mix screw by hand if I had known what the problem was at the time. I’ll make a new adjustment arm and take it to the river for a test.

Yupp I was out on the water just had to tweak it a bit and found somewhat optimum. When I slowly creep up to full throttle though at the top speed was some stutter.... so I was like whoa and slowed down. Richen it a bit???

Watched your video. Very informative, but i need to to know how far to turn air/fuel mix out from stop position. Linkage and knob have been removed before i attempted adjustment.
@scottjones63383 жыл бұрын
I don’t know if you ever found your answer, but what I did was from fully closed I turned it a 1/8 turn then try starting. If it doesn’t start then turn another 1/8 turn and try starting. Do that till it starts then go from there. I also make marks on the low mix screw so I know where it’s good on cold start, warm start, fully closed, etc.

I have a 1988 force 9.9. Was running g great, had 120 psi compression. Then took it over mountains on a lake hot day and more passengers then usual, and it seemed to have over heated. The cylinder head cover paint got burnt. My impeller is definitely working. Was trying to mess with premix screw but didnt help. Now my compression is showing 90 and when I pulled plugs they were wet. Also at trying to rev it high by hand the rpms are surging up and down. Any advice for me? Does too much oil in gas cause compression to drop?
@samuelhall40564 жыл бұрын
I've got a 1968 Fastwin that will not start unless you add fuel to carb throat or cylinders. Runs perfect once it fires up. Any idea what the cause could be? Compression is 120/125, Carbs been cleaned, new points, condensers, plugs, wires, all new fuel hoses and gas tank.

Great video. Thanks. I used the Sea Foam and it really helped my motor. Question unrelated to carb: The grease fitting on the shift lever...I have pumped a ton of grease into it and am not getting any coming out anywhere. Where should it come out? Should I just keep pumping it in, or could I damage something?
@highlandoutboards6 жыл бұрын
For that grease fitting, just 3 or 4 strokes on the grease gun is all you need. Excess grease from continuing to pump is dropping down your exhaust tube into the lower unit. No damage, just gonna be a little messy down there if you remove the lower unit.

Great info! I have a72 18hp and tried a few of your tips. The helped but I'm still getting a low idle/low speed surge in all weather conditions. I have a brand new fuel tank/line and primer, new fuel line from carb to fuel pump, just rebuilt and cleaned carb, fairly new plugs (about 2 months old). If I'm moving about 3mph or faster I have no issues, and the primer has good pressure at idle and when under load. I've adjusted the low speed mixture a bit, only an 1/8" at a time back and forth to see if anything changes. Any ideas??? Thanks, Phil

is it cooling properly ie. what is the cylinder head temp? have you checked for hot blue spark with a tester>? id check timing as well and pop off the flywheel. make sure the points are gapped to spec and the coils test good with an ohm meter. if its overheating could be the exhaust gasket underneath...

Fuel ratio is 50:1. A 2 stroke means you mix the oil & gas in the tank, theyre not in separate compartments

Air is getting into your fuel line somewhere. Either at connector on tank side, connector on motor side, or fuel line to the carburetor.

The restriction is only for fine adjustment. You have to pull the plastic coupler off, adjust the mixture,then replace the plastic sleeve with the adjustment needle CENTERED within its adjustment range.

I’m not a professional. I’ve worked on my small engines plenty of times. My belief, what you’re dealing with is the Dog Clutch is Worn. There is a Pin Part that Falls into a Slot. If you look at the Slot, you’ll probably notice it’s rounded off. Order a New Dog Clutch, or have it Machined, to a Sharp Edge like New. I’ve Machined mine and worked Perfectly. Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong. I hope this helps

My Evinrude 18 Bj 68 I have awakened after 30 years from the preservation. This also went very well. Runs great when he takes full gas. I give full throttle and it pulls like a 4 ps engine. If I then take a few times gas completely away and again full gas he goes off like a rocket and then stops the gas. If I go back completely from the gas, the whole game starts again from the front. Can someone help me? Spark plugs, fuel hoses and oil are new. He also goes on the first train.

How many psi ist great for this motors i have one sane thing runs 3 miles but low aceleration ?
@highlandoutboards7 жыл бұрын
Low acceleration could also be caused by your carburetor mixture settings. Mixtures that are too rich are equally likely to cause acceleration problems as mixtures that are too lean. The factory specifications put most of the compression testing emphasis on having compression in both the cylinders within 5psi of each other. They don't emphasize having a specific compression value in the service manual, but the community generally recommends compression of greater than 70psi. Ideally somewhere between 75 and 85psi.

My throttle always wants to return to slowest setting - thus killing the motor. How do I make it so that throttle stays where it is set? Or how do I adjust what the slowest setting is so that it doesn't die? I basically have to hold the throttle handle giving it a bit of throttle all the time.
@RCpilot10136 жыл бұрын
Tolli Lowell-Forker there is a little screw on the left side of the shaft. You can tighten that screw to prevent the throttle from backing off too far and causing it to die. If you open an close the throttle you will see how it works
@russg18016 жыл бұрын
There's an idle stop screw on the side where the throttle linkage 'tower' shaft engages with the tiller's horizontal shaft. It may be a nylon screw and broken or missing.

On that model and same for similar years/models, the starting position for the low speed mixture screw is 1 to 1.5 turns counter-clockwise from a lightly seated position. The starting position for the high speed mixture screw is 0.75 to 1 turn counter-clockwise from a lightly seated position. Use this as a starting point.

Working the throttle by hand, you're not moving the timing. It won't rev up and run right if the timing isn't moved along with the throttle. They move in sync timing and throttle.

That motor is missing or has a broken water restrictor in the mid section.I have seen it many times.Water is just slushing and pulsing out the engine which isnt OK to me for my engines but probably you will get away with it no buddy likes pulling the powerhead off to replace the plastic restrictor. At idle it should be spraying like a shower head.Check the thermostat too take it out or replace it.Just an observance from mechanic for years on outboards.I have a real nice 1968 Evinrude 18H.P. in my collection same year with less than 25 hours on it.I love these videos ..

Is there another name for the water restrictor that you're talking about? I just checked Marine Engine web site for this part and can't find it in their parts diagrams. I'm looking at the diagram for a 1961 18hp, 15034.

@@TerryInOttawa Hello Terry sorry for late response look at 1968 Evinrude 18HP m/n 18802 at the marineengine.com website lower unit group parts view and you will see the restrictor P/N 313435.Like I said you probably get away without it as the earlier 18s didnt have it . I just think the restrictors came out because the waterpumps were so strong without the restrictor that they wanted to slow the cooling flow time down a little to run warmer at higher power settings even with a thermostat but Im not sure...Glenn

High speed fuel mix can be affected by the low speed mixture setting. Also, high speed fuel mix can be affected by the cleanliness of the high-speed orifice. Make sure it is clear of residue or obstructions.
@russg18016 жыл бұрын
Clean the carb and check the ignition to make sure you're getting strong spark. Oxidized breaker points or fouled plugs could be the culprit. Also check compression to make sure powerhead isn't tired.
